Obituary for Bob Pennett 3
This was just received from Krista on our Facebook page. I always remember Bob at our Gabfests as a very friendly cheerful guy. https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tubmanfuneralhomes.com%2Fobituaries%2Frobert-bob-pennett%3Ffbclid%3DIwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR21O8GVbHvOXeWJsITw_yBPA5pztQ5J2xAsmJHSF7fNBuG94e_L9tp8tHI_aem_TTRqsBUddqfaHOmMn0dYsA&h=AT1Gi-lLo972FgEZmeQD6fhc5pKgbyMwSHFTFQD7OkAtlhjRLN1xDT9pV3QQL_QjnfDOh-s2cWKphk95MCvJ2PrDw1HqJYJA5dxVNdOz00MVI_zErPBXpdAhcwwHKL-u5r4

Observing at Bootland Farm dark site tonight! 2
Hello all! The sky is expected to clear up this evening, with good sky transparency at Bootland Farm after midnight. The forest fire smoke particles in the atmosphere have also appear to have mostly dissipated (for now). I plan to be at Bootland Farm to do meteor observing from about midnight until morning. A few friends might be joining. All are welcome! I am unsure how good the weather will be for the Perseids peak nights next Sunday and Monday nights, and meteor rates are already kicking into high gear! : ) For those of you new to the group, you can find the maps, and instructions for the Bootland Farm site in the files section of the group... /g/oaog/files/Maps/Bootland%20Farm Clear skies! Pierre P.S. Weather also looks good for tomorrow night, but I haven't decided where to go observing.

An interesting event in November 2
Hey Everyone, I apologize as this may seem off-topic, but bare with me just a sec as I'll redeem myself to get at least semi-on-topic. In November, hundreds of people (mostly women) from across Ontario will be participating in Freezing Woman 6. This is an annual group winter camping event that takes place in Algonquin Park. See more about it here: https://www.ripplesandleaves.ca/freezing-woman My reason for messaging is that I no longer have sufficient night vision to effectively lead an astronomy activity. I was wondering if anyone's interest may cross over like mine does, and enough that you might want to join us, and host an astronomy related activity at Freezing Woman (kinda like sidewalk astronomy, except darker skies!)? Thanks for considering! Kind regards, -- Andrea Ross

NWNC Dark Skies Project -Star Watching Party - Thursday July 18
Hello everyone. I just wanted to let you know that there is a Star-Watching event happening at the Narrows Lock, on the evening of Thursday, July 18, from 8:30-11:30 PM. We would love for anyone interested to join us for an evening of fun under the stars. There will be telescopes set up and astrophotography going on all evening. This is a free event and is family-friendly, so all are welcome. The NWNC Dark Skies Project is an initiative to have the regions of Narrows/Westport/Newboro/Chaffeys Lock recognized as an official Dark Sky community, an area of low-light pollution, perfect for star gazing and astronomy. We are hosting a series of astronomy events at the Narrows Locks this summer to help raise awareness of efforts to protect the night skies. We hope to see you all there! Bootland Farm site update + observing post-moonset late tonight is a GO! 2
Hello all, As some of you are aware, Tom Bootland, the owner of the property in Stewartville (past Arnprior) which has graciously permitted us to use for dark sky observing, has recently passed away. It was for us a surprising and very sad news. Tom has given us access to his property for the past 20 years, and every year, he has maintained/mowed large grassy area for us to setup and enjoy the sky. In return for giving us, amateur astronomers, open access to observe from Spring to Fall, our presence has helped deter unwanted trespassers. I have since been communicating with his wife Charlene. Charlene would like to continue to grant us access to the property, and her two sons will continue to mow the field on a regular basis. As always, the maps and instructions for access to the site are available in the groups files section. If you have trouble getting to them, please let me know and I can share them with you privately¡ /g/oaog/files/Maps/Bootland%20Farm Tonight, I will be heading out to Bootland Farm for some post moonset observing from about 12am to 4am. A few of you have mentioned interest during the RASC meeting and I thought I would the group know in case others are interested in joining us! I plan to do mostly meteor observing but I may bring my new¡¯ish TV np101 and try out new eyepieces. And also take a few images. There is plenty of room for a good number of cars and setups at the field. If you would like to join us, do bring plenty of mosquito repellent as I expect the warm night will be very buggy. Bring also good boots or tall water resistant shoes as the field might not yet be mowed. Clear skies! Pierre

Aurora 2
Hi Jean go north of the city somewhere with a low horizon. KP six will not be very high up. Take pictures with your camera. The camera will see Aurora before the eye will. Request for solar observing at S¨¦raphin-Marion school on Wednesday June 5th 3
Hello all, S¨¦raphin-Marion school would like to know if a telescope volunteer (or two) would be available to setup a solar observing session for their students for about an hour on June 5th, from 11am to Noon. This would be a great way for all the students to highlight their school year's astronomical theme about the Solar System. If you are available, please let me know (meteorshowersca at yahoo dot ca) and I'll put you in touch. P.S. The school's direction was very happy and thrilled that Xavier participated at the garage sale event on May 25th. Thank you Xavier! Cheers! Pierre

Astronomy Day 2024 report ¡ª great success!!!
Hello all! Sorry for the late post... We had a very successful International Astronomy Day event, on Saturday May 18! Although we had more daytime cloudiness than expected (hindering some of the solar observing), the sky cleared up nicely by late afternoon and early evening and it stayed mainly clear throughout the nighttime session! The turnout was terrific, with an estimated total 1100 visitors enjoying conversations and sharp views of the Moon through several different telescopes. A big, big thank you to all the volunteers who helped out this year. Whether it was a telescope setup during the day or night, as a floater volunteer, help with materials or with promoting the event, it was well appreciated! And thank you to each of you who came out to visit ¡ª the conversations and sharing the views are always the highlights of such a day! It was also really nice seeing OAOG'ers from the "early years" of the group ¡ª really nice seeing you Joe, Krista, Todd and Bryan! We look forward to the next observing events coming soon! Here is a collection of excellent quality photos taken by our volunteer photographer Natalie Legault on our Facebook page. These are the same images that Denis shared (also located on this group's photos section). https://www.facebook.com/OttawaValleyAstronomy Clear skies! - Pierre

Request for telescopes at S¨¦raphin-Marion school - Saturday May 25th 2
Hello all, We received a request for outdoor telescope support (solar observing) during the daytime for a students garage sale event at S¨¦raphin-Marion school in the east end this Saturday May 25. I am awaiting confirmation on the time, but I believe it is ongoing from morning to afternoon, and the timing and duration for telescopes is flexible. They would be more than happy with any kind of support available and ideally would like to know roughly when telescopes would be setup, for planning purposes. If you are interested in volunteering, please let me know and I'll put you in touch with the organizer. Thank you! - Pierre

Firmware and astronomy
Hello everyone! Congratulations to all for a wonderful astronomy day at Chapters. I stopped by for a bit, thank you to everyone who participated and worked hard to bring it to the public. A while ago I remember seeing an email from the group concerning Tristan Young from former Focus Scientific. If i remember correctly the email mentioned he can be reached for some technical support even though he is not with Focus Scientific? If is this true how may i contact him concerning some firmware upgrades for 2 go to mounts? Thank you kindly Geoff

Astro Day update - weather and setups
Good morning everyone! Happy International Astronomy Day! We hope you are as excited as we are for today¡¯s event! Here¡¯s a weather update¡ The rain has ended but we expect a good amount of cloudiness to linger this morning, as we gradually setup on site. By early afternoon (about 1pm onwards), the frequency of clear skies is expected to increase, and we hope to be able to do solar observing. There is a small chance of a scattered thundershower by mid afternoon. I would recommend bags, tarps or blankets to cover equipment just in case we get some precipitation. Otherwise, by about 3pm onward, it is expected to be mostly sunny and clear! The numbers of telescopes and displays will likely increase as the weather improves throughout the day. Mostly clear skies are expected this evening and tonight for our main observing session until 10pm! Temperature high this afternoon is 24C, therefore we recommend wearing a hat, putting on sunscreen and having plenty of fluids if you¡¯ll be staying a while. So to recap, weather should gradually improve as the day goes on. We will setup on site gradually a bit later this morning. And we expect a nice sky this afternoon and evening! Looking forward to seeing you there! ??? - Pierre
