Astronomy Day 2024 - May 18th
4
I know everyone is busily making plans for the Total Solar Eclipse, but I wanted to at least start the conversation about Astronomy Day. The date this year for the event is Saturday, May 18th. I am looking for feedback from the group regarding what we want to do. I unfortunately have plans that day and won't be able to attend. If there is interest in holding the event, I am willing to support the planning and co-ordination with Rio-Can and Chapters. Please let me know what you think. Cheers, Jim T.

Great eclipse experience at the Ste. Anne de Bellevue Legion
The weather in Ste. Anne was great, with a little high cloud. As a rank amateur at this, I still managed to snag a bit of video through my grab-and-go. Unfortunately, missed snapping totality, but .... WOW. Randy

Wow! Total Eclipse was amazing
4
Hi Everyone, I was fortunate to experience the eclipse today in Granby, Quebec. As we arrived in Granby at a random gas station, we bumped into an intrepid group also from Ottawa. We chatted, and quickly decided to change plans to join each other and go to a random parking lot to avoid the crowds. We did, and shared in an experience we will all be talking about for years to come I'm sure. Attached is my picture I took. I left almost all my gear at home... choosing to just experience the eclipse without the stress of my scope, filters, laptop, fancy cameras, etc. All I had was eclipse glasses, my smartphone with an app, and my mirrorless camera to snap this picture. I arrived home, and was relieved and overjoyed to see that I managed to focus properly. Things looked good on the back of the camera screen, but all bets are off until you blow things up on a bigger screen. Anyhow, wanted to share. I hope you all had a great experience too! Take care, and hope to see you around one day soon, Andrea

Good luck for the great solar eclipse! :D
Hello all! I just wanted to wish everyone the best of luck with catching the solar eclipse, whether you are travelling to the totality or hoping to catch a great deep partial from Ottawa! Denis Legault and I are in Sherbrooke, looking forward to a great show this afternoon! Not that I do not have access to my regular email address at the moment. Allan Rahill (retired CMC meteorologist and amateur astronomer) just wrote an update after many people asked him where the cirrus clouds will be located ahead of the eclipse. He recommends setting up somewhere between Sherbrooke and Mont Megantic to give the best prospects. But don¡¯t give up where ever you are. Any spot could have a lucky break between clouds even if it looks less favorable. Clear skies all, and I look forward to reading or hearing about your observations and images!!! :D - Pierre

Eclipse glasses
2
Hey folks, I'm planning for the eclipse on April 8th, and was wondering if anyone has a reputable source for eclipse viewing glasses in the city. It strikes me as the kind of thing you shouldn't buy the cheapest version of off of Amazon, you know?
