EXTREME GEOMAGNETIC STORM--NOW!
The biggest geomagnetic storm in almost 20 years is underway now. It has reached category --an extreme event. Sky watchers with dark skies may be able to see and photograph auroras even at low latitudes. Get away from city lights and look at the sky!

Re: >>> POTENTIAL AURORA ALERT!

Hi,
Do you have any recommended sighting sites in the Ottawa/Gatineau area?? Gatineau Park seems a good site if you find a clear north view.

Thanks,

Astro Day is in one week!!!! Seeking volunteers :)

Hello all!

I hope everyone is doing well! ?:)

International Astronomy Day is fast approaching! ?To celebrate the occasion, we will be setup all day (weather permitting) on the parking lot outside Chapters (near Ogilvie road) with our annual display of telescopes, free handouts, solar observing and evening stargazing session. ?The primary objective of this event is to share our knowledge and passion of astronomy with the public. ?We are advertising the event on the OAOG’s Facebook page and by other means, so please help us by spreading the word. ?The more people, the merrier!

I will be assisting with the coordination this year. ?To help us plan, I would love to get an idea of who is coming, along with a count of setups (whether you have a scope that you would like to bring, or a display). ?So could you please either email me at meteorshowersca at yahoo.ca (replace the at with @) or message me through Facebook if you would like to volunteer either with or without a scope/display?

If you want to bring a scope/display, let me know what you have so that we can make sure we have room for you. ?For large setups requiring vehicle on site, please let me know as well. ?Note that there will be limited space available for vehicles within the display area. ?It would be preferable to park vehicles outside the display area to leave room for setups. ?For safety reasons, vehicles will not be allowed to move within the displays area during the peak times of the event.

Everyone reading this who has an interest in astronomy can and is encouraged to participate! ?If you are new to the group, and have an interest, consider yourself already a member :D ?All are welcome to the OAOG, whether you are an absolute novice or a seasoned astronomer. ?I also want to clarify that members of the RASC are definitely welcome to join us at Chapters with their setups, and we understand that other events may be planned in the region, requiring volunteers too. ?We love seeing a wide variety of equipment and telescopes of different sizes and types. ?Even a very humble inexpensive table top telescope can be very helpful to display for those seeking advice on buying a first scope on a tight budget for example. ?All you have to do is join in the fun! ?Astro Day is a highly rewarding and fun day! ?You won’t regret it!!!

If any questions, please let me know. ?Let’s hope that the weather will cooperate!

Clear skies!
Pierre

Sky & Telescope (1940 to 2009): PDFs with individual volumes on full DVD

Dear friends:

Good evening!
I am Alexandre Evangelista da Silva, a Brazilian ATM. I was wondering if you could help me. 10 years ago I started collecting the virtual issues, in PDF, of the very important Sky & Telescope magazine. However, I was only able to download the volumes from 1940 to 2001. And I haven't been able to download from 2002 to 2009. Could someone send me these issues from 2002 to 2009 or the equivalent of the full DVD??
I remember there was a DVD containing all the issues of Sky & Telescope magazine from 1940 to 2009. This special edition must have been commemorating the International Year of Astronomy in 2009. Because I tried to buy it directly from the magazine's official website, https://skyandtelescope.org/. However, the website no longer has any DVD issues for sale. And I'm still stuck with the discontinued collection. I would very much like to read the extraordinary articles in this astronomical magazine.??

Sincerely,

Alexandre Evangelista da Silva, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil

Re: Astronomy Day 2024 - May 18th

Morning all,

I have gone ahead and contacted RioCan and Chapters-Indigo regarding use of the parking lot next to Chapters Silver City on May 18th.? They have already responded with approval for us to use the space - Yay!?I will continue to act in a co-ordination role, and can even show up and help in the morning, but I have another event to attend in the afternoon/evening.? If you would like to volunteer to participate in the event, please contact me at the email address below.

Great eclipse experience at the Ste. Anne de Bellevue Legion

The weather in Ste. Anne was great, with a little high cloud.

As a rank amateur at this, I still managed to snag a bit of video through my grab-and-go.? Unfortunately, missed snapping totality, but .... WOW.

Hi Everyone,

I was fortunate to experience the eclipse today in Granby, Quebec. As we arrived in Granby at a random gas station, we bumped into an intrepid group also from Ottawa. We chatted, and quickly decided to change plans to join each other and go to a random parking lot to avoid the crowds. We did, and shared in an experience we will all be talking about for years to come I'm sure.

Attached is my picture I took. I left almost all my gear at home... choosing to just experience the eclipse without the stress of my scope, filters, laptop, fancy cameras, etc. All I had was eclipse glasses, my smartphone with an app, and my mirrorless camera to snap this picture.

I arrived home, and was relieved and overjoyed to see that I managed to focus properly. Things looked good on the back of the camera screen, but all bets are off until you blow things up on a bigger screen.

Anyhow, wanted to share. I hope you all had a great experience too! Take care, and hope to see you around one day soon,

Andrea
