Re: Observing session tonight at Moosecreek site - GO!
Hi Pierre, yes I was there around 11:45 pm.? I drove down the un-named road with the tall grass (last arrow on instructions) and at some point (about 1.7 km) there was a locked gate. Just before the gate there was a left turn through the corn field - I ended up setting just a the junction.? In the picture bellow I marked in red where the gate was and where I drove and inn green where I setup. I left around 1am.? The current Google maps satellite unfortunately no longer matches the pdf screen shots and there¡¯s.? On Sat, Aug 12, 2023 at 9:57 AM Pierre Martin <pmartin@...> wrote:

Observing session tonight at Moosecreek site - GO!
Hello all,
I plan to be at the Moosecreek site this evening to observe early Perseids. ?I expect to be there from about 9pm to midnight. ?The Perseids peak tomorrow night, but the weather around Ottawa looks very iffy. Clouds are expected after midnight, but it looks good for at least a couple hours after it gets dark. It would be nice to see a few OAOG'ers, or those reading this message to come on out. ?The owner of the property has been notified and we are good to go! Details below on how to get to the Moosecreek site. ?NOTE: ?The instructions are a bit out of date. ?The site has changed ¡ª once you reach the "observing area" indicated on the map, take the LEFT road going into the corn field. ?At the end of it is the dead end, with a large "turnaround" that has room for a number of cars/setups. /g/oaog/files/Maps/Moose%20Creek All are welcome! : ) Clear skies, Pierre |
Perseids meteor shower peaks this weekend! Info...
Hello all,
?
This Saturday night will be the peak night of the famous Perseids meteor shower, one of the year's best! ?Even better is that the Moon will not present any problems this year! ?The broad traditional annual maximum is predicted on August 12/13, between 07h UT and 14h UT (which translates to between 3am and 10am EDT). ?Under very dark skies and ideal viewing circumstances, the rates could surpass one meteor per minute during the early morning hours of the 13th. ?In areas affected by light pollution, or obstructions (such as buildings or trees) the rates will be lower. ?This shower is known for producing good numbers of colourful meteors, and fireballs. ?The Perseids can be enjoyed from nightfall onwards, although rates generally increase during the hours after midnight.
?
Here's a good article to learn more...
This year's shower might have a couple of additional surprises:
?
1) ?A weak filament is expected to cross Earth on August 13, around 03h UT (11pm EDT), according to ?meteor dynamicist Peter Jenniskens. ?(A filament is thought to be an accumulation of meteoroids in a mean-motion resonance.)
?
2) ?There is also the possibility of enhanced activity on the following night Sunday August 13/14, between 01h UT and 0245h UT (between 9pm and 10:45pm EDT). Meteor dynamicist Jeremie Vaubaillon predicts that the Earth will encounter a very old trail of dust released in 68 BC. ?It is definitively worth monitoring although a prediction of the activity level is essentially impossible. ?Back on the morning of August 14 2021, I was fortunate to observe an unexpected strong outburst with a ZHR of more than 100 above the basic level, about a day and a half after the nodal maximum! ?So if your skies are clear Saturday and/or Sunday night, give the Perseids a try! :)
?
Clear skies!

2023 International Camera Star Party Cancelled
As a result of a significant number of cancellations, the 2023 Camera Star Party has been officially called off.
The effort required to prepare the yard for the event is deemed unwarranted due to the low turnout expected. Furthermore, the presence of smoke from nearby forest fires may pose a potential issue. Rock M. |

Successful sidewalk astronomy session on May 26 - Thank you!
Hi everyone!
I wanted to thank everyone who attended the Friday May 26 sidewalk astronomy session at Chapters! ?It was a VERY successful event with 9 scopes. ?We estimated about 400 visitors came by ¡ª it was such a very busy and fun evening!!! The evening was affected by varying amounts of cloud cover, but enough clearings occurred to allow sharp views of the Moon and Venus. ?The sky improved as the evening went on. ?For most of the time, there was a constant flow of visitors, from young kids to elderly, and many asked great questions. ?It was really nice to be out, and great to see that there is still a lot of interest in astronomy. By the time we finished and packed up, it was well past 11pm. ?Denis Legault still had a few late visitors to take a peek in his 14 inch Dob! Thanks to: ?Ivo Leupi, Denis Legault, Gordon Dewis, Michel Godbout, Bojan Broz, Jim Sofia and Michael Wolfson. ?Apologies if I missed anyone else! Here's some photos I took of the action (links on this group's Photos section and Facebook): /g/oaog/album?id=287345 Hoping we can do this again soon! : ) Clear skies, and hope to see you tonight! - Pierre |
