Re: Looking for more volunteers for Astro Day! It's coming fast!! : ))
I've been away from OAOG for more than a decade as my children grew, but I'm coming out. I'd be glad to help out! My partner, and teens may be convinced to help volunteer too. I'm experienced with camp cooking for a lot of people so could feed a whole bunch of OAOG'ers if that's helpful? My chicken stew and fresh baked buns are always a hit. ? Very excited! Looking for more volunteers for Astro Day! It's coming fast!! : ))
Hello all!
The OAOG's FaceBook page at () is generating some very significant interest, shares, likes among the public! ?There are already hundreds of people indicating that they are interested in the event! ?The word definitely seems to be spreading very well. ?Thanks to Jim for keeping the Facebook site active. So we could expect a nice crowd! : ) This also means that we will gladly accept all volunteers to help out, whether you have a scope or not. ?If you have a telescope or display that you would like to bring, please let us know or advise Jim Thompson. ?This is just to help us to plan the layout of setups. ?If you don't have or don't wish to setup, but you are interested in volunteering, this can be very helpful too! ?For example, it is always great to have extra hands to help with the morning setups, or tear down at night. ?During the busy spells, extra eyes to watch after things, or help by keeping an eye on a scope while the needs a break, etc. If volunteering in any way interest you, please let us know! If you are new to group, join in the fun!!! ? You do not need to be an expert or own any equipment to take part. ?All that you need is enthusiasm and interest : ) ?And as always, OAOG has no memberships, fees or structure. ?It is really just a group of like minded individuals who love astronomy and sharing it with the public. I'm gradually getting organized here... un-dusting my not-much-used scope and other stuff. ?And starting to get excited for Astro Day! ?REALLY hoping for a nice sunny day and clear night!!! Cheers! - Pierre |
to Jim: Re: NASA NSN Re: resource Re: [oaog] Astronomy Day 2023 Update #1
Too bad. You folks are doing great outreach work, too. I didnt think they would be restrictive like that, but I guess it makes sense. Their budgeting probably is restricted by the government to their own country because they operate on grants.? But still,? if the many free resources are useful, enjoy!
About one half of all their outreach posters, handouts, info sheets. etc are free to anyone for downloading, including the solar observing cards and solar observing activities on the pages I sent you.?
?Any extra goodie that can explain topics or entertain members of the public at an outreach is a wonderful thing.?
All the best
Karel

This sounds like fun! Thanks Jim, for all the time and energy you are investing to create such a great outreach day!
If anybody would like, you can use this? link??
https://nightsky.jpl.nasa.gov/download-view.cfm?Doc_ID=498
to print out free, professionally-made, solar observing information cards for the public to look at while waiting in line at the scopes.?
(If OAOG were a member of NightSkyNetwork, the cards would come with a teaching kit. So the second card may not make sense without the kit when it refers to "these UV beads" and the hat)
and here's a printable educational banner??https://nightsky.jpl.nasa.gov/download-view.cfm?Doc_ID=500
It's about 2ft x 3 ft (I think thats about 70cm x 90cm) ?
Below it are some educational activities?
Feel free to explore the night sky network pages. They have many free astronomy outreach activities.?
If OAOG joins NSN (which is also free to do on their homepage) before April 29, you can then record that you used some of their outreach resources as a member club (take a pic or two). Email them the proof. They will mail you free outreach goodies, supplies, and kits as a thank you for every few uploads you send with pictures and proof of using their activities.
I hope you have super clear skies on 4/29!

I trust you are all getting excited for this year's event like I am.? We are only 2 1/2 weeks away now.? If we can get weather on the 29th like we did this past weekend, it will be a great day.? Here is a list summarizing where we are at so far with the planning: 1.? Volunteers:? So far I have had confirmation from 11 people that they plan to come with their telescope(s), plus 3 maybes.? I also have 2 people signed up to run our greeting table.? There is plenty of room for more volunteers.? If you are interested in helping out, even for just a little bit, please contact me directly. 2.? Rio-Can:? I have been in touch with the parking lot property owner, Rio-Can.? Every year there are some hoops to jump but in the end we are good ... we have their permission to host our event again this year. 3.? Chapters:? There has been yet another store manager change, but the latest one has confirmed that they have no issues with us hosting the event next to them, and they are willing to let us plug into their 110VAC power like in previous years. 4.? Handouts:? All of our past sources for free handouts have dried up.? I have however had a solid response to my request for old astronomy magazines and calendars (thank you Richard, Mary, and Art!).? Mary Brown also gave me a stack of star finders and other miscellany.? I have printed up some fridge magnets with OAOG & RASC contact info, and made another batch of "Junior OAOG Observer" pins for the kids.? We should be good for free stuff to hand out at our greeting table. 5.? Static Displays:? I came up with a better way (I think) of setting up our static displays this year.? In the past we have set them up under the canopy at the greeting table because of the wind, but I don't think anyone actually looked at them there.? So for this year I have constructed a free standing display area made up of 4 plywood panels that we can arrange in a hollow square or zig-zag wall.? I think it will be slick. 6.? On-site Power:? We will use the same setup as last year where we borrow power from the Chapters store until they close around 8pm, then we will switch to a small generator for the rest of the evening.? The switch over will be streamlined by hooking everyone to a UPS (thanks Bojan!). 7.? BBQ:? I still have the small table-top BBQ donated by Michel last year.? I will bring it and some propane, however I don't have time to take ownership of running it or getting meat, buns, etc.? If somebody wanted to do that task, it would be great! 8.? Schedule:? I have made it a habit the handful of years that I have been co-ordinator to drive to the Chapters parking lot the night before to put up barricades.? That way we don't have to worry about somebody parking there over night who is not an event volunteer.? I plan to show up on Saturday morning, some time between 7:30 and 8:00am, to start setting up my scopes and the greeting table.? Volunteers are welcome to show up when the like, keeping in mind that we are advertising a 10am start.? Please let me know before the day of the event when you think you will be arriving so I can co-ordinate accordingly. 9.? Signage & Posters:? I have in my possession our 2' x 3' Star Party sign, but not the smaller ones.? Pierre, I believe you have the smaller signs, and that you will bring them with you on Saturday.? Is that correct?? I have uploaded posters to the photo section.? If anybody has some free time and would like to help promote the event, feel free to print out a few copies and to get them posted around the city, especially the businesses around Chapters Silver City. 10.? Weather:? Sacrifice of my first born to ensure we have clear skies on the 29th is still pending... Cheers! Jim Thompson |

Re: Astronomy Day 2023 Update #1
Of course, if someone is interested in volunteering food, condiments or water, etc... perhaps the rest of us could pitch in and help with the costs. ?Just a thought : )
- Pierre ========= BBQ... If a volunteer is available to bring an iced cooler with burgers, sausages, and condiments for lunch and supper, that would be great! ?However, it might just be simpler and easier that all interested bring their own food and use the BBQ at their convenience. ?Jim, do you have the adapter to connect a standard full sized BBQ tank? ?If so, I could bring one full of gas. ========= |
Re: Astronomy Day 2023 Update #1
Hi Jim! ?Hi all!
Astro Day is getting close!!! ?Yeah!! :D ?It would be amazing if we get a bright sunny and warm day, as we're having now. ?Fingers crossed!!! I'm getting re-organized after a semi-hiatus from astronomy... I say semi, because I've still been out observing throughout the past year, just that my schedule has been a lot busier and more unpredictable. ?But I am eager to get out again and take part of these events! Great news that we have already 11-14 scopes lined up! ?We've been ramping up the OAOG Facebook page promotion of Astro Day, and interest from the public is doing very good! ?At the moment, over 300 people have mentioned either being "interested" or "going"! ?Wow!!! ?We also will be doing a media push. ?Everyone is encouraged to spread the word about this event! Handouts... Jim, I still have a good number of the Astronomy/Sky & Tel handouts (intro to observing, Moon, etc) along with all my usual handouts. ?I also have a box of old magazines. ?I'll bring them. ?Thank you to Richard, Mary and Art for your contributions too!? Looking forward to seeing your new static display setup! ?That sounds like a good idea! BBQ... Schedule... I would plan to arrive early (around 7:30am) for setups. Signage... I do indeed have the smaller ones and will bring them, along with some of my other Astro Day paraphernalia. ?And Gorilla tape to hold down the signs and other things from wind. Cheers! Pierre |
