That looks great Brian, any chance of a photo of the chassis please?

Cheers Robin?

?
I am posting some short videos of a Plate Framed Simplex I recently built using a offset gearhead micro motor to drive it via O rings to each axle it also has another O ring driving the radiator fan.

We;ll see if it works this time this is the third time I have tried to upload photos

Thanks Brian, that's very helpful.

Cheers Robin?

Looking at it more closely Brian, I have a couple of questions on the chassis.

?

It looks like the motor is fixed through the plate carrying the output shaft on the gearbox – have I got that right?

?

It also looks like the wheels are held by outside frames and if so are they removable?? Having had an internal drive belt fail on me due to my own incompetence I am a bit nervous of not having a way to replace them without a major rebuild!

?

It looks very elegant and a good solution.? I have a couple of similar chassis from Locos n Stuff but they suffer from being a bit jerky.? I think it is down to the gearbox which is (I believe) really intended for camera lens focusing.

?

Cheers, Robin

Each of the axleboxes have 2 x 1mm hex bolts holding them to the chassis when you remove the wheels there is another plate which incorporates the motor mounting which is held in place by 2 1.6mm phillips screws, when u remove those screws the entire motor and mounting bracket releases from the frame of the loco, to reassemble you first fit the mounting frame to the motor then lock the triple pulley to the motor output shaft then screw in the 2 1.6mm screw that lock the motor to the mounting frame, you then slide the motor and mounting bracket into the loco frame and screw in the 2 x 1.6mm screws to lock it to the frame, you then bring the set of wheels with the O ring on the axle and bolt them in place, then the each set of wheels has the pulley on the axle mounted in a offset position the axle that aligns with the closest pulley on the motor shaft? to the motor frame has to have the O ring fitted first there is enough room at the end of the motor shaft to allow the O ring to fit and the last O ring which drives the fan goes onto the motor shaft last. So replacing any of the O rings is fairly easy the O rings are Nitrile NBR? rubber so they will last a long time and won't perish.

I am planning to release this as a photo etched kit etched in nickel silver, the kit will complete with everything you need parts wise to build the complete loco, you obviously need to soldering skills to build the kit. it can be set for either 14mm gauge or 16.5mm gauge

Thanks for the detailed reply Brian.

?

Wow, that’s so clever and my heart was sinking the more I read until you mentioned doing a kit!? I have kit building skills but my scratch building skills are rudimentary to say the least.? A kit would be very welcome.

I am waiting to get the drawings for the bow framed simplex and will do kits for both.

Brain?
Been a while since I’ve checked in glad I did?
Wonderful modeling and exciting news that you’re planning a kit release?
Would be interested in both the plate and bow framed versions
My Wrightlines plate frame runs well (Mark Clarke drive) but I’m ?struggling to get the Lawton to run a smooth as l’d like
Please keep me in mind on the kit development?
cheers joe Gilmartin?

Joe, Sorry I have decided not to go ahead with any kits as a result of the poor response, I can only assume no one is really interested in a model Simplex.
Brian

That’s a shame Brian.? It looked a very well thought out design.? I suspect there are a few interested in model Simplex locos but they may be happy with the chassis offered by Locos n stuff.

?

As an aside for Joe, I think Mark Clark now offers his Mk2 SPUD replacement chassis to suit the Nigel Lawton bow framed Simplex.

and I have one of the KB Simplex drives as well?
But ? ? one can't have to many Simplexes

If you adopt chain terminology then Simplex is one loco, Duplex is two, Triplex is three and so on.? In which case David is right with Multiplex for an unspecified number.

?

Why chain terminology?? No reason other than these locos were chain driven!

Merry Christmas, Robin
