Quarry Hunslet Book Second Edition
开云体育Please does anyone have Cliff Thomas's Quarry Hunslet book second edition, 2004 I think? I'm told that it contains a 'poor head on' picture of the two locos with low cabs at Moel Tryfan / Alexandra / Amalgamated Slate. I have the first edition 2001 and it isn't in that. ? I don't want to try to get a second edition if this picture isn't in. ? Frank |

开云体育Frank,I’ve just had a quick look at the second edition of Quarry Hunslets of North Wales and the entries for Tryfan and Cadfan just have Hunslet official photos (one each). However, if you reach for your copy of Slate Quarry Album (second edition) you will find a detailed reproduction of the photo you mention of the pair head on - this reproduced from an original print. There is also a photo showing Tryfan with the ‘breadbin’ cab and rubbish wagon tender circa 1920. Both on page 50. 开云体育Keith, ? There is! I'd looked at the rear of the book where the text refers to the NWNGR, never occurred to look at the front where the text is about the embankment railway. Neither is a 'good' photo but it tells me what I need to know. Tryfan still has its original semicircular cab, it wasn't cut down as low as that on Cadfan. In business! ? Thanks ? Frank ? 开云体育Andrew, ? Thanks, but I already have these. ? To explain, Tryfan was built in 1902. It had a low cab to work tunnels at Moel Tryfan quarry. It had a cab roof as a full half circle rising from the edges of what would have been the top of the cab side sheets on an open cab Hunslet. This is what I assume Roy means by a bread bib roof. ? Cadfan followed in 1904, the roof sprang from the same point but had a flattened top as Andrew's second picture, Tryfan was 6 ft high, I'd guess at Cadfan just over 5ft. ? My concern was that if two years later Cadfan was ordered with a lower roof had Tryfan not fit and was it pruned in Wales. From these pictures it is clear that Tryfan kept its higher roof. ? The quarry is being reworked for 'decorative' slate and the tunnels are no longer accessible. I went to look last Autumn, and fortunately ran into David Gwyn there. He says there were two tunnels at different heights (above sea level). ? Anyway I can (when I get round to it) make up Mercian kits with different cab heights knowing that they ran in the quarry like that. ? Frank ? ?
