New Layout

Hi Guys,

Have been lurking on here for a good while, but am actually getting round to building a layout now, so have created a blog for me to record what I'm up to. Not much progress yet, but thought I'd let you all see what I've done, comments & suggestions are most welcome. Hopefully much more progress to come.

Hi Dave,
Your Newbury layout looks interesting: is the library building the one that when built wasn't strong enough to take books?
A group of us meet about 20 miles from there at The Barleycorn Inn, Collingbourne Kingston, six times a year. Our next meet is 14th March, 8-10pm if you're interested. We're not gaugist, but while my test track supports 14, 16.5 and 33mm, John Clutterbuck's is 14mm only. At any rate, you'd be more than welcome.
Cheers,
David Hughes,

Hi David,

Yes, that is the very same library! Thanks for the invitation to the meetings at the Barleycorn, I did come along to the first few, but it's been a good 18 months since I've been. I've put 14th March into the diary, and will be there.

Regards,

Dave

Hi Dave

Looks an interesting project. I've been refreshing my techniques for L&B SR period track so if you need any advice please shout. I would recommend making a throwaway point first as a practice.

John

I will watch with interest. Your foam core baseboards are of great interest. Any flex issues? I have been also considering a product called Gatorboard available here in the States.

Keep blogging! Thanks for sharing.

Hi John,

Thank you, yes, I was thinking of making a throwaway one first. Started doing that last night, but then found that I'd managed to make the crossings as curviform in Templot, so back to Templot to update everything to regular ones.

Hi Dave,

The Gatorboard looks good stuff, I guess that would remove any issue with moisture with having a poly outside rather than card. There is a very little flex, I'll see if I can come up with an experiment that will quantify it. In my room it's set on top of the desk (kitchen worktop), so flex is no issue here, but picking it up at one end, there is no noticable flex just under its own weight. If I prop it up on one corner, I can get it to flex a little by applying pressure. I'll see if I can get a photo that shows how much.

Regards

Dave

Hi Dave,

Just added a post to the blog that discusses the flex with the baseboard, and gives some measurements, hope that it will be useful for you to help decide whether to use the gatorboard. I mentioned you by name in the post, hope that's OK, will edit you out if you prefer.

Dave

Dave,

Thanks for that posting. It seems from your tests it should work well.?
