L&B Manning Wardle model

Dear all,

firstly thanks to the moderators for letting me join the group.

Back in 2014 I posted an advertisement in the L&B magazine and Model Railway Journal inviting enquiries for a model construction project I planned to undertake. This is to build to the highest possible standard from scratch models of the Lynton & Barnstaple Manning Wardle 2-6-2t engines in 7mm scale. Designed and developed using CAD by myself from a set of works drawings, construction will be all metal, using nickel silver and brass with all details accurately reproduced for any given period in the prototypes life.

This year, the first of these models is expected to be started, and I am again inviting enquiries to be made for additions to this very small batch of models. As a proviso, they will not be inexpensive as they will necessarily be highly time consuming to make.

If you are interested, please contact me directly if you wish, and we can discuss matters.

I hope members of the group won't consider this invitation too impertinent.

Best regards

Tom Mallard

Tom,
You might want to consider that Slater’s are about to or have already released a 7mm kit to build the manning Wardle and also the Baldwin loco as well they have developed driving wheels for both models.

I believe Slater's will be releasing their Lyn before any Manning Wardle, but do keep in mind that EDM has all the gubbins from the original Gibson Manning Wardle kits and has over the same timescale been developing the kits further.

That aside, poor modellers such as I (my Gibson kit has been 20 years in the building, and the chassis ain't started yet) might well be interested in either a scratch-build such as you're suggesting, or a professional kit build, but would want to have some sort of ball-park figure in mind before expressing too much interest. If you're T J Mallard of Rossendale, I guess we have an indication of the high quality of build!

I know in speaking with David from Slater’s they have done both driving wheels 2’9” dia. with a 8 spoke and 10 spoke version, and will be available as 14mm gauge or 16.5mm gauge, the wheels apparently screw onto the axles not like conventional Slater’s wheels

David, yes I am T J Mallard of Rossendale!

I'm interested to hear that Slaters are planning to release a kit for Lyn and likely the Manning Wardles - it makes sense as they've released some of the coaching stock. I am also aware of the EDM owned ex Gibson kit and it's extended gestation. Whichever end up being released I am sure they'll make nice models.

Overall it's good to hear that the preservation movement and construction of replica engines is generating interest in this prototype as modelling subjects

Tom

Thanks for the information Brian.

I don't think it will alter my plans significantly, but we will see. Interesting about the wheels, though.

Tom

Welcome Tom. I recall your MRJ advert. I trust as you are on this group you will be building them to the correct gauge (well 14mm anyway). You may want to publish details in the REVIEW and also look at Zamzoodled Jones-Calthrop couplings. I have to declare an interest in both.

John

Yes, John, the correct gauge will be very important to the models. I hope that I can complete them in a timely fashion and they are an obvious candidate for the REVIEW. Construction will be of the 'whatever it takes' approach I usually try to use, so fingers crossed it all works out.

Tom
