Last big layout?

开云体育

When I say ‘last big layout’ it doesn’t mean it will be the last one that I build.? I just have a hankering after a continuous run like I had with Dyffryn but with a bit more operational potential.? I have a scheme in mind based on a GVT plan drawn by Roy Link for the Railway Modeller and reproduced in one of the Reviews.? Whilst based very much on the GVT it would be like Dyffryn in as much as it would give me somewhere to run and showcase stock from between 2’3” to 2’6”.? I would try to keep each train to its prototypical formation, e.g. TR trains, CR trains, GVT trains, W&L trains and SDR trains.? Whilst I have quite a collection of FR and other 2’ gauge kits to build, I would prefer to build those to 14mm gauge.? Hence my dilemma of which one do I build?

?

Of course I could just build all the stock and then impose myself on others to run it on their layouts!

?

I also recognise that I have quite a ‘sable’ collection (stash acquired beyond life expectancy) too, some of which has already been sold on.

?

RtR in either 016.5 or 014 is to be welcomed if it means I don’t have to build some of the stuff I have accumulated over the years.

?

Well done to Lionheart for being the catalyst of the most activity I can remember on this Group for quite a while.? Long may it continue.

?

Cheers,

?

Robin

I remember that GVT plan in Rly Modeller - it was a good one.
I like the term “sable” as well - my wife is a keen knitter and ?she reckons it could equally apply to her wool stack.
On a more serious note, does anyone know what changes Slaters have made to the “Lyn” kit compared to the L&B Models original? I have a half-built one of the latter which will progress once I can figure just how to mount the pickups on those lacy bar frames.

I haven’t seen a new kit yet, but I understand that a lot of at least the chassis has changed. Slaters seem a bit reluctant with it as, despite being a Slaters stockist, they seem reluctant to tell me its available to order or anything about it. The last feedback I had was from Chris Walker who was test building the prototype kit and who had a long list of improvements to be fed back. That’s was pre-covid and I can only hope they were implemented.

Thanks Paul, that would make sense. The resin castings in the original kit are excellent but design of the frames left a bit to be desired - they look good but are a tad difficult to assemble squarely. Having said that, American style bar frames are a lot more difficult to do with etched sheet than are British plate frames, hence the interest in what Slaters are doing.?

This was as far as my plan got.? My wife does a lot of patchwork and has a similar stash to me.? She coined the phrase ‘UFO’ unfinished object which applied equally to both of us.? Lockdown has actually reduced the UFO pile considerably but I am sure we shall both be able to replenish our respective piles!

Robin,

You’re not the only one taken with Roy’s GVT plan, or Glyn Ceiriog in general, combing the terminus with a round roundy layout has a lot going for it in terms of operating potential. Milner went into some detail regarding the method of working in Volume 2 of Rails to Glyn Ceiriog.?

Your version turning the square into an oblong is rather cunning too. Am I right in thinking that your plan works out at 16ft by 8ft?

Thanks
Andrew?

Robin,
This email made me laugh. UFO's!
A friend and myself have been doing model building demonstrations at one local exhibition each year out here in Australia.
For the first one the organisers wanted to know what we would be building so they could put it in the exhibition guide.
My mate and I just looked at each other and said we would be working on some of our collection of UFO's.
The organiser guys could not get there head around this concept of multiple UFO's.
Regards,
Gary

Hi Andrew,

?

It would be about that but I think it would only be about 15ft long with the end boards slightly shorter to fit the (periodically) available garage space.
