Nice to see these in use with a proper big loco -- I'd only tested them with my tiny Clayton model. As Chris stated we'd started work on these before knowing that David had also produced a set. Given I'd done the design work already it seemed daft not to make them available, and I know from discussions with David on the NGRM forum that he doesn't feel I'm stepping on his toes by doing so.

So if anybody wants a set they are available at -- the price fluctuates a bit due to the way Shapeways deals with pricing and exchange rates but currently ?6.40 will get you a set of four spacers (i.e. four axles worth) which I imagine will be enough for most people,

Re: DCC Concepts Rolling Road with 14mm option

As per conversations elsewhere, so has Mark Greenwood produced some 14mm spacers compatible with the DCC Concepts Rolling Road.? This was after some emails between us and before we knew that David was thinking along similar lines. I have uploaded a couple of photos and short video (hopefully) with my Lew on the test bench/track.? If they don't appear, I will ask John to do it for me....

Michael,
I agree with you about this being the best layout at the exhibition. The equipment is all scratch built, all the track was hand laid and the scenery was first class.
The one thing that elevated it the the standout category was its shape. It was not a boring straight layout.
I was talking to the owner/operator on Saturday and I told him that in my opinion it was the best layout at the exhibition.
Saturday night award presentations saw him receive Public Choice, Exhibitors Choice awards. He got two other awards as well. Not sure what these were.

Gary

I went to the Liverpool (Sydney) model railway exhibition last Sunday. In my opinion the best layout there was "Fingal". This is a layout based on a Tasmanian 3'6'' gauge main line railway. It was modeled in 00 scale using 14mm gauge track. After a couple of seconds of mental arithmetic I realised that this is exact scale/gauge ratio. The only significant difference between his track and mine ( 0 scale 2' gauge) was the flangeway width. The locomotives are powered with BullAnt mechanisms.

The layout is quite large and is very well constructed, sceniced and operated. The correct guage does make the model look so much more realistic.

I haven't come across this combination before. Is it popular? Given that it is also 14mm gauge, it helps broaden the base and therefore safeguards our use of the gauge.

Regards,
Michael Milway

PS
He still had people thinking it was H0 scale. ? ?

I have heard that in the past at least, Tasmanian modellers used OO scale and 16.5mm gauge track to model their 3’6” gauge railways. While this is not exact it is closer than using 16.5mm track in OO scale to represent standard gauge. Sounds like someone has taken the next step and gone correct gauge.

Re: Status of KB Scale

I use ME55 rail soldered to copper clad sleepering, it looks perfect and is very easy to use. Where they can be seen I add cosmetic spikes made from cut down staples fixed in drilled holes. Kay Butler at one time sold copper clad sleepering that had been milled along its length to enable typical corrugated steel sleepers to be replicated easily and it would be nice if this could be reintroduced, however plain sleepers, both steel and (of course) wood, weren’t unusual on the prototype. I have used a mix of KBscale/RCL plastic and copper clad sleepering but the thickness of the plastic ones makes this hard work.

Re: Status of KB Scale

Hi David,?

Good to see you active again. Re alternative rail, I personally rather like the Micro Engineering ME55 and ME70 profile rails. They have a very nice flat bottom profile and ME55 scales very close to prototype 20lb. Maybe worth a look but sourcing it from the States may be expensive? Paul Martin at EDM normally stocks it.

All the best and hope to see you soon,
James Smith

Thanks for all the comments about the rail. I've always thought it could be better to have a lighter profile for industrial track and this would give a nice visual difference to the Kalgarin 82/7.

I will buy a few different types and have a play.

Hi Michael,

?

Sorry for the delay in replying, I’ve been away in Cornwall enjoying the Launceston Railway amongst other delights.

?

Regarding your PS, I reviewed the Dundas OOn3 wheel sets some time back in the IO Groups site:

?

/g/o14/wiki/Resources%3A-OOn3-wheel-comparison

?

The axles are the same length and diameter to the KB Scale skip chassis wheels and I found them to be interchangeable with no problem.? I did note that the wheel tread is narrower but I had no problems with a converted skip chassis running through my track work.

?

Don’t forget that Mark Clarke (Locos n Stuff) now does 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 and 12mm disc wheels on 2mm diameter axles.

?

?

Cheers,

?

Robin

What is the current status of KB Scale? The web site just says that a new web page is coming.

P.S. Has anyone been successfully using re-gauged Dundas Models wheelsets?

Re: Status of KB Scale

You may recall there is a comparison of rails here (see the PDF):?/g/o14/wiki/Resources%3A-Prototype-and-Model-Flat-Bottom-Rail
I would be happy to update it with new rail types if anyone can supply accurate details - these all came from manufacturer's details.

Re: Status of KB Scale

Hi David and everyone. Great to hear KBscale is coming back.

I've heard conflicting reports about IL-115 being discontinued but I'm sure you are better placed to know. Karlgarin rail is absolutely correct for 'mainline' NG but not light industrial. In fact a lighter rail would be be even better (IL-115 was code 82 IIRC). I used Micro Engineering code 55 on my quarry but it is very soft and wheel flanges can easily hit the spike heads - which were my superfine staple versions.

John

Re: Status of KB Scale

It's good news that David Janes is planning to reintroduce the KBScale range.

Regarding rail, I've been using the Peco IL1 rail [sold for 00 '3rd rail' and Z gauge track] with good results. The web height and head width are ideal. The foot width is narrower than the previous rail but I had no problems using it in the KB Scale point crossing jigs. I recall its Code 60 rail. It might be better to use this than Karlgarin as you never know if the latter will continue to be available.

Good to hear from you!?

A couple of suggestions for replacement rail for the old Peco IL-115:

Karlgarin do 3 excellent weights of rail designed specifically?with O scale narrowgauge profile.? The foot is however significantly wider than the Peco rail and would require re-tooling of a number of your products to work.? It does however look good!

C&L finescale make a 4mm scale code 82?flatbottomed rail in steel (4RA101D) which (I think!) has a similar profile to the Peco reail and may be a direct replacement.? I have used it before but it has long separated from its packaging so I'm not sure which one it is!

Hello everyone,

A short update. I moved house at the end of last year with more space for a bigger workshop. Most of KBscale is still packed up as I haven't had time to get the workshop organised yet, but I have made a start. Next on my list is to build an enclosure for the moulding machine compressor and then I will be able to start some production again.

One issue for the future is that the Peco IL-115 rail, that all the track parts are designed around, is no longer available. I will need to investigate alternatives and see if something is going to be suitable.

Best wishes

David

Further to the above I must put my hands up about a mistake in the above posting. It is the wife of the owner (Pete McParlin) of Backwoods Miniatures who has the health problems (dementia) - see his website - and NOT the owner of KBscale. I have no idea what personal problems (if any) he has.

Sorry for that.:-[
