Re: Quarry Hunslet Book Second Edition
开云体育Andrew, ? Thanks, but I already have these. ? To explain, Tryfan was built in 1902. It had a low cab to work tunnels at Moel Tryfan quarry. It had a cab roof as a full half circle rising from the edges of what would have been the top of the cab side sheets on an open cab Hunslet. This is what I assume Roy means by a bread bib roof. ? Cadfan followed in 1904, the roof sprang from the same point but had a flattened top as Andrew's second picture, Tryfan was 6 ft high, I'd guess at Cadfan just over 5ft. ? My concern was that if two years later Cadfan was ordered with a lower roof had Tryfan not fit and was it pruned in Wales. From these pictures it is clear that Tryfan kept its higher roof. ? The quarry is being reworked for 'decorative' slate and the tunnels are no longer accessible. I went to look last Autumn, and fortunately ran into David Gwyn there. He says there were two tunnels at different heights (above sea level). ? Anyway I can (when I get round to it) make up Mercian kits with different cab heights knowing that they ran in the quarry like that. ? Frank ? ? I'm told that it contains a 'poor head on' picture of the two locos with low cabs at Moel Tryfan / Alexandra / Amalgamated Slate. I have the first edition 2001 and it isn't in that. ? Re: Quarry Hunslet Book Second Edition
开云体育Keith, ? There is! I'd looked at the rear of the book where the text refers to the NWNGR, never occurred to look at the front where the text is about the embankment railway. Neither is a 'good' photo but it tells me what I need to know. Tryfan still has its original semicircular cab, it wasn't cut down as low as that on Cadfan. In business! ? Thanks ? Frank ? The carriage looks different from both the Foxfield versions and the 5D stoke ones in that the top of the windows are almost arched, with square bases. Quite unusual.? |

I’ve just had a quick look at the second edition of Quarry Hunslets of North Wales and the entries for Tryfan and Cadfan just have Hunslet official photos (one each). ? Re: Fibre Glass Bridge
开云体育Hi Frank,
?
I have an idea that in the dim and distant past, making allowances for aged
memory, Peco marketed one. The parts looked at first glance as though they were
vac formed plastic but were actually fibre reinforced. I had one myself but
never used it, indeed it may be hiding in one of the boxes of “00” parts that I
have not unpacked since my last house move 20+ years ago!

Subject: [o14] Fibre Glass Bridge ?
Out of a junk box at Bakewell show a couple of weeks ago I bought a bridge made from glass fibre. It might be 4mm, but equally could be for 7mm narrow gauge as the style, stone with a brick arch is very much NWNGR/WHR. ? Anyone know the source? ? Frank |

Re: 14mm Roller Gauges wanted
Hi Roger
Good to hear that you are modelling 014, but sorry to hear about the ever increasingly common health problems you are both having to endure. My modelling is often unconventional and thus over the years I have built layouts in P4 standard gauge, P4 Narrow gauge 014 and now 017.5 and never used a gauge at all. I have just used my trusty digital vernier and slips of card for flangeway gaps. Maybe not ideal, but it would get you going while Shapeways does your printing? I could be converted though and buy one of yours from Shapeways if they become available.? Paul? |

I have all the bits I need for making track, apart from gauges and Frank is right I have the ability to make some, but it’s just another obstacle. Having a couple of brass ready made ones means I could start tomorrow apart from taking Sharon to the hospital. I think I will draw one and send it to Shapeways (Not brass, it shrinks).? Roger |
Re: 14mm Roller Gauges wanted
开云体育Mike, ? As 14mm gauge standards are effectively narrowed EM then buy C&L EM gauges. Unless they've changed, the 'gauge' is a piece of tubing, the check rail spacing is 'washers' all held on a bolt. Dismantle, shorten gauge tube and reassemble. ? Frank ? Re: North Staffs coaches
Thanks George. It does look very similar but is not as long with fewer panels. I suspect the Hulme End one might be a 6 wheeler and theirs four maybe. I can’t see why a North London van should end up on a North Staffs line really, but I don’t know what vans the NSR had. Cheers all. Paul?

David, ? I compensate one axle on anything the length of the Peco L&B van or longer. MJT now do, at my persuasion, an inside bearing rocking axle frame that fits under the floor. They admit that now they hardly sell any of the old style with much longer legs. I ream out the plain holes and use Gibson small 2mm bearings. Tip, if you do a brake van with veranda put the fixed axle at that end. Otherwise, if you put a white metal guard at one side the van tends to tip. I have one with guard at one side and three milk churns at the other! ? Outside bearings I accept don't run as freely as pinpoints but it does mean I can couple Kadees without the stock moving. ?
