Re: Chemin de fer du calvados

David,
'Calvados pour les Petits Trains' is A4 and has 175 pages, most with at least one illustration (there is a lovely double-page photo of Caen's place de la gare with standard and narrow gauge stations either side). St Pierre is there too, in fact there are several illustrations of the area because of the electric tramway.
I came across the railway when visiting the D-Day museum in Bayeux, where I notice a picture of British troops walking along a narrow gauge railway. A few years later I discovered that moving Pegasus bridge (the construction of which in 1923 severed the CFC's link beyond Salanelles) destroyed the last surviving bit of the trackbed. I can't say how dismayed I was!
A couple of years ago I entered a diorama of the halt at Hermanvilles, on the afternoon of D-Day, in the Dave Brewer Challenge at ExpoNG. One of these days I'll finish it. Which reminds me that some of the line can be explored online via the Imperial War Museum's photo collection and the Canadian government collection (depressing, as Canadian troops pulled apart the carriages they found to use as fuel). There won't be much of Caen St Pierre, as the fighting devastated the whole city.
One of the Norman-style stations survives at Le H?me-Varaville, and last time I was there the postmaster was, I believe, local historian Jean-Luc Kourilenko whose collections of photos have been published by Sutton and include 3 volumes on Caen which might be of help.
Now to search for the other book you mentioned ...

Does Alain¡¯s book have any drawings? I¡¯d love to model a 60cm-gauge steam tram loco, and the Calvados enclosed 4-6-0ts would fit the bill nicely.

Hi David,
Welcome to the Group.
I've got Alain's book 'Calvados pour les Petits Trains', and love it. It took me a while to find one at a price I was willing to pay, from a French seller on eBay (?35 IIRC). I saw a copy once at an exhibition in Southampton but dawdled before buying and was beaten to it.
I can't comment on Henri's book.
I have joined a French Facebook group 'Le Calvados autrefois' which shows the area in old postcards, and CFC comes up from to time to time. There is also a French auction site delcampe.net which is searchable by location which might help re Caen.
Best wishes,
David H

Re: Exhibitions

When exhibitions are being attended in declining numbers, it doesn¡¯t hurt to spread the word through new and different means. Particularly when attracting the next generation.

There are those who use Facepest who may never think about using other platforms, online forums, or the ukmodelshop website. Have to admit that I never think of looking on the latter.

Andrew

Re: Exhibitions

One advantage of having a Facebook group dedicated to exhibitions, is that those who attend can post videos of those events and you end up with a record spread over a number of the exhibitions over the years.

John and all,
Am aware of UK Model Shops site. as secretary of EXE Model Railway Society our show is listed there, along with many others.
Just thought it was something that wouldn¡¯t go amiss on Facebook.

Re: Exhibitions

Hi Frank,
Whilst I use UKMD almost exclusively we can't ignore the fact that it's old school (email and? the website non reactive so doesn't work well on mobiles) and large swathes of the population use social media for everything. Perhaps Kevin you could collaborate with Adrian Hall?
John

Re: Exhibitions

Kevin,

Isn't this unnecessary duplication of the very good service provided by ukmodeldirectory? Exhibition managers have at least 3 magazines to notify, UKMD, and we'd hope the 7mm exhibition list for Narrow News.

Re: 7MM NNG 16 build

I'll watch this with great interest having had a good look at one recently. Are you building in preserved condition or original working condition as in South Africa? Although having seen? no 138 it was surprisingly scruffy and worn in places which is perhaps not surprising given how hard they need to work.

John

7MM NNG 16 build

Keith Stamper

Hello Fellows,
I have been working on building my BWM NNG 16 kit and have added a few more photos to my album. I have made up the cab roof to more closely resemble the drawings and also done a lot more work on the main assemblies.
I will soon begin the task of adding various pipes and details. However my intention is to build all these components as subassemblies so that I can paint the loco before final attachment.
As of now, I am waiting one more major set of parts and this is the valve motion that was offered by EDM. Once these parts arrive, I will build the running gear up and test run the model. The loco be using a battery system as I do on all my other locos on my On3 layout and will install it and the radio receiver also before painting and then remove it all once I am happy with the locomotives performance.
My long term plans are for a portable layout that I can take out to local shows.?
Regards,
Keith Stamper

Re: Ballast - Suggestions

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I know that the Green Scenes ballast is from nut shells as my friend Roger Brown put John Lloyd onto the stuff years ago.? John used to colour it with household paint in a food processor but I don¡¯t know if he still does it this way.? The stuff I had felt a lot lighter than the Woodland Scenics ballast that I used on Tony¡¯s Forest but it might just be that I was using much smaller ballast so the density would have been higher for a similar sized bag.? I think I found that the Green Scenes ballast discoloured slightly when I glued it with pva.? I switched to Green Scenes matte medium when I did Tony¡¯s Forest and had no problem.? I also used Mod Podge diluted by about 4 to 1 with a drop of washing liquid to reduce the surface tension and again had no problem.

?

Cheers,

?

Robin

After a bit of googling I think Woodland Scenics ballast is made from ground walnut shells - probably coloured to suit. The raw material is readily available in different grades as a shot blasting material:??ohn
