Re: [O-14] Re: Chipped Lister
Frank Sharp
A bit more progress to report. If you looked at the last photos I added,
you will have seen that in one I had cut down the Kadee coupling and drilled a hole through it. Since then I drilled another hole straight into the end of the stub beyond the first hole, and Araldited a piece of wire into it. Once set the coupling was pushed through the coupling slot, the wire bend down (towards the track) and cut to just over 1 mm in length. A Slater's buffer spring was the Adaldited across the wire. See Lister 9 A cut out has been made in each end of the chassis block for the spring, see Lister 8 I have unsoldered the function wires from the chip. To do it I have had to remove the shrink wrap, but have replaced it with black which saves painting it. I had looked at trying to give the driver a working (glowing) fibre optic cigarette and a working hurricane lamp on the footplate, both DCC controlled. I think it could be done, but what the hell, it's Christmas..it's a new year challenge for someone. I'm partly through painting, and then it is just assembly. I have decided to try to keep the original motor and to shield the brushes under the motor cover. Next pictures should be completed model, I doubt it will be ready for the new year, but hopefully early next week/month/year Frank |
Replacement K1 Garratt Cylinder Covers
For those of you who may have missed my post on the 7mmnga group, I
have produced some masters for replacement cylinder covers for the Backwoods K1 Garratt. These are of the correct size and have the correct number of bolts unlike (unfortunatley) the ones in the kit. Recently Paul Martin of EDM Models has kindly offered to produce these for me and is set up to handle international orders etc. He can be contacted at: Paul Martin EDM models paul@... www.ngtrains.com Regards John Clutterbuck 2632 |

Doug: As a fellow "left-coaster" (Seattle) I hear your pain, but I've had no problems getting Roy's products from Parragon. They are very accomodating and using a credit card eases the currency exchange. The purchase arrived perfectly packaged--no damage whatsoever. Greetings from the Left Coast, USA:
(1) Are you actually working to 14mm gauge? No. (2) If so are you using the RCL standard, if not what variation are you using? None - finding Roy's stuff in North America - forget it! The only dealer I knew of, stopped handling RCL two years ago. (3) What are you modelling? Freelance On30 operation on an island. (4) Are you on DC or DCC or thinking of the latter? DC...eyeing DCC, but not convinced of its reliability. (5) Be as vague as you choose, but roughly where are you? Southern Coast, State of Oregon, USA D.K. Re: [O-14] Re: Chipped Lister
Frank Sharp
I have loaded some photos into the photo section in a file called
Lister. By some miracle they seem to be a sensible size, I only wish I could remember how I did it! Lister 1 Top view, you can see that I have cut part of the footplate away under the gear box. The red is the sleeve on the chip, will you notice it when it's painted black? Lister 2 This is the coupling pocket, drilled out, ground into a slot and cleaned up with a fine file Lister 3 The motor is the one supplied with the kit, I am worried that the clearance between the brushes and the engine cover is so tight that I might get shorts. With a DCC chip this will be fatal. Lister 4 Branchlines new micromotor, just positioned to show how much more clearance there should be. I have e-mailed Branchlines who say it is rated at a maximum of 0.75 W at 12 volts, so it can draw 60 mW. However Branchlines say that the windings are very fine and that it certainly isn't recommended to run it at that for long. I won't be doing anything which will make it so the old motor won't still fit. Lister 5 The modified chassis block, the light catches where I have filed it away Lister 6 Lister 2 was the modified coupling pocket, I have cut the pivot off the Kadee and drilled a hole through the top of the coupling pocket, and then drilled the hole in the coupling bar to match. My intention is to drill into the end of the shortened coupling bar, and put in a short length of wire. I think I can find room then for a Slaters buffer spring to act to centre the Kadee. Lister 7 Drawing of the footplate, I've cut away the green area. That's progress so far, I know one or two are holding off DCC because you aren't supposed to be able to do Roy's Lister, but I reckon I'm well on the way to getting it done. Further Episodes to come. Just realised I answered question 2 incorrectly. I am using fine 00 standard, based around Romford loco wheels. Carriages and wagons were fitted with the finer Gibson wheels, but all are now being replaced with Romfords.

Here are my answers (for what it's worth!):
(1) Are you actually working to 14mm gauge? Yes - ish - I have a number of Roy Link's kits, but nowhere to run them at the moment (2) if so are you using the RCL standard, if not what variation are you using I am using Roy Link's standards and Romford 'RP25' with the back-to-back and check gauge (back of one wheel to the outside of the other wheel's flange) 'tweaked' to suit Roy's standards. I have done this by carefully reducing the back of each wheel boss to suit the axle - not easy as I have found a bit of variation in the axles! (3) What are you modelling It's a secret - even I don't know but it is likely to be a forrestery line set on the Welsh/English border (4) Are you on DC or DCC or thinking of the latter Good old 'Digit'-al operation - I push the controller with my digit (finger). (5) Be as vague as you choose, but roughly where are you Up to my neck (as usual) near Gloucester Regards and Merry Christmas to all, Robin Edwards |

You may want to look at the new "scale size" KD couplers #58 as I recall. They come out as a 1/2 size MCB coupler in 1/48 definitely suited for industrial use in 7mm.

Re: [O-14] Chipped Lister
Frank Sharp
Steve and All,
I said I would report on progress with RCL Lister and DCC. I've spend another afternoon playing with it, and I have got a DCC chip in. I've used the Digitrax DZ123, though with a bit more filing the ZTC 217 might just go in the same place. It shows, you can see it, but when painted black I bet no-one ever spots it. Assemble the floor, frames and ends. Roy suggests holding it together with florists wire whist soldering with a small gas torch. I used a torch, but assembled the bits in a Skamulex block (Vermiculite) from Squires with map pins. Drowned it in Bakers No. 3 flux, put bits of solder where required and applied torch. It means it is well soldered together, which it needs to be. Only then take a piercing saw and cut out the flat plate between the chequer plate and where the motor cover fits. On the chequer plate side there is a plain strip about 2mm wide, file away all except the outer 3mm at each end. On the other side file away the same strip up to the vertical edge of the angle section which runs across the floor, leave the same 3mm ends. On the chassis block, file or mill down the top of the chassis, just where it is under the opening you have created in the floor. Take it down until the shaft between the worms is only just clear of the file. Don't file with the shaft in place, keep cleaning out the brass dust and trying it. Assemble chassis block to floor/frame assembly, the chip will JUST fit into the recess formed in the floor. You need to file some of the underside of the gearbox away so it will seat down properly on top of the chip. You lose most of the open space either side of the flat plate, but only a few are going to notice. I bought the chip, and the ZTC one to see if they would fit in the back of a portly driver, with the wires let into the back of the legs. I still think this could be done. I can fit isolated pickups on both sides, but I am worried about the clearance of the brushes and the engine cover. I need to be sure they are isolated and stay isolated. I have a Branchlines new micromotor and it will fit with much more space to get the wires in, I just wonder if it has the power for two worm gear sets. Sorry Roy, but next job is to find a way of fitting some cut down Kadee's. Once I've got that sorted I'll post some pictures. Frank |

Re: Ossynths & DCC
Roy Link
Please remember that Ossynths systems are 'custom built' by Otto to suit individual requirements. I know Otto has built a system for someone to run three different locos (steam). you would need two separate systems, one for steam, one for IC, so could easily have two locos running at once. I know Otto is working on other clever additions, lights and smoke etc., being amongst them. His ingenuity never seems to falter, if you ask him for a feature not currently part of the system he will go away and think about it - and come up with a solution.
I'm not sure what Adrian means by 'engine notes sound weird'. Although electronically generated, they are faithful copies of real sounds. When I first ran the system in Norfolk, a friend came round to see the 'Lister stationary engine' he thought I had just started up! Roy |
