Re: New Layout

Hi Dave,

The Gatorboard looks good stuff, I guess that would remove any issue with moisture with having a poly outside rather than card. There is a very little flex, I'll see if I can come up with an experiment that will quantify it. In my room it's set on top of the desk (kitchen worktop), so flex is no issue here, but picking it up at one end, there is no noticable flex just under its own weight. If I prop it up on one corner, I can get it to flex a little by applying pressure. I'll see if I can get a photo that shows how much.

Regards

Dave

Re: New Layout

Hi John,

Thank you, yes, I was thinking of making a throwaway one first. Started doing that last night, but then found that I'd managed to make the crossings as curviform in Templot, so back to Templot to update everything to regular ones.

Hi Dave

Looks an interesting project. I've been refreshing my techniques for L&B SR period track so if you need any advice please shout. I would recommend making a throwaway point first as a practice.

Hi David,

Yes, that is the very same library! Thanks for the invitation to the meetings at the Barleycorn, I did come along to the first few, but it's been a good 18 months since I've been. I've put 14th March into the diary, and will be there.

Dave

A group of us meet about 20 miles from there at The Barleycorn Inn, Collingbourne Kingston, six times a year. Our next meet is 14th March, 8-10pm if you're interested. We're not gaugist, but while my test track supports 14, 16.5 and 33mm, John Clutterbuck's is 14mm only. At any rate, you'd be more than welcome.

Mickleover Derby Open Day Saturday 21st

A reminder that it's our Open Day at Mickleover on Saturday

The Trent Valley Area Group would like to invite all members, friends and other railway modellers to their Open Day?on 21st January. Please note that this is at a new venue. After many years at the Community Centre, we have moved a few hundred yards down the road to Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Centre. This is the Catholic Church Hall next to the petrol station by the roundabout in the centre of Mickleover. The new venue gives us more space which is all in one large room and so we won’t have displays hidden in classrooms where operators felt left out of the main event. There is a large kitchen and so we will still be able to provide refreshments and another benefit is a separate car park which is not shared with the library users. The only disadvantage is the cost which means a reluctant increase in our admission price to ?4 but we hope all our visitors agree that it’s worth it.

This event will see the first public viewing of the replacement to our Henmore layout which had been featured in both Narrow Lines and Railway Modeller. After sustaining some damage at the York show, it was agreed to scrap it and start again - whilst the planning was a long and slow process, we have now reached a point where we would like to share its development with our visitors.

I recall have a conversion with the late Colin Pealling at Woody Bay one day after the cross over had been installed and he was convinced it should have been 1 in 10 or 1 in 12.
?
Looking at the Leslie S Robertson Book 'Narrow gauge railways two feet and under'?Pub by Plateway press. It is stated that the L&BR had curves of 5 or 6 chains (110 to 132 yards) and turnouts?and crossing being 3 1/2 chains (77 yards)?

I can confirm that at the 12" to foot model of Woody Bay Station in North Devon, the specification to the manufacturer for the?up (Barnstaple) end crossover turnouts was an actual 1 in 8. All other pointwork was made in situ so the geometry varies. However, 1 in 6 - even for yard sidings - would be tight given the length of the fixed wheelbase of a MW, From memory those in Pilton Yard were mostly great than 1 in 8 apart from the siding to the turntable.

Hi Steve

When preparing the Templot plans for the L&B Lynton project I am working on, which were drawn over the Measured and Drawn plan, it became clear most of the turnouts were 1 in 10 and one was nearer 1 in 12. Only the crossover turnouts are closer to 1 in 8. I hope this helps.

Your project sounds really interesting. Please keep us posted.

Hi John,

Looking at your Templot downloads for the L&B 1:8 turnout, a quick query;? was 1:8 a standard on the L&B or did they use tighter radii? i.e 1:6 in yards etc?

Pondering a potential new scheme for later in the New Year... been researching in the Cornwall Records Office on the Padstow, Bedruthan & Mawgan Light Railway (1902). Sadly never got built due to lack of capital and difficult geography, however, had they done a bit of lateral thinking and adopted narrow gauge instead of the proposed standard......

I'm saying no more for the present!

Bests for 2017

Martinhoe Cross appeared in Narrow Lines issue 168 in a different form to that shown on ebay, so I assume it has been rebuilt since. Nick Brown was the builder and a brief article describing how it came into being can be had via the 7mmNGA online archive.

My Chelfham is currently 1930s but I'm minded to remodel it in early L&B (no mature?trees to cut down, which helps). The great shame is that the building is beautifully made, and I don't know what damage I'll do to it in removing the Southern lean-to?sheds at side or rear. I can't see Steve and I ever reviving our desire to build the Pilton to Barnstaple Town section, though I may do the quay between the crossings: again, early period.

My main efforts L&B-wise is building the Gibson MW in its early form, which is fun.

This one is new to me. There's Bratton Fleming in progress on RMweb. David H has Chelfham, I'm building the track for Lynton (this one is over 30ft), so we will nearly have the whole line in O14. Just need Pilton and Barnstaple Town (no pressure David & Steve) to complete. Slaters are bringing out much of the rolling stock and hopefully Paul will have the MWs ready soon.

I perhaps need to get more castings in.

Re: Slaters L&B Coach Kit

And a shameless plug from me for the correct accoutrements for modelling the L&B such as Jones-Calthrop couplers, coupler bases and fishplates at:

John

Slaters L&B Coach Kit

开云体育

The forthcoming Slaters L&B Coach kit is approaching completion as other have said.

?

EDM Models has recently become a dealer for Slaters products with the intention of stocking mostly their narrow gauge ranges.

Our initial order (for 16mm Scale items) should be with us on Monday and I have discussed the L&B range with Slaters and will be stocking it as soon as its available

?

Having exchanged e-mails with David White today there are a couple of things outstanding to do before the kit is available with the hope that it would be available by the end of the month. That is a hope rather than a promise.

Slaters won’t be attending NGSW and never had any plans to so not sure where that part of the rumour originated.

?

When I asked about NGSW David said, “We are not at Shepton Mallet so you are welcome to fly the flag for us providing we have no problems with production.”

Guess that makes EDM Models the launch partner for NGSW.

?

You won’t find any mention of them on the website yet but I am thinking of providing the opportunity to purchase online but also the means to reserve for collection at NGSW so I have some idea at least how many to take with me.

I will do a further post when there is more news

?

Inevitably the release of the Slaters L&B kits will prompt the question “when will your Manning Wardle Kit be available”.? All I can say for the moment is that it is now being actively worked on but is still a little way off. At present some research and testing is going into what motor/gearbox will be supplied with the kit with it being likely that it will get an upgrade to a coreless motor and custom gearbox. This research stems from the closing of Mashima and wanting to future proof the kit. For the moment that is all I want to say about it. Before more is made public I need to have contacted all the customers with reservations and I want to do that once there is something to show them

Re: Slaters L & B coach kit

I read in the last issue of the Gauge O Guild Gazette that Slater's Plastikard had bought up the moulds of kits for L&B stock from the defunct L&B Models range and they would be releasing the kits once the moulds had been brought up to date, at the time of that report in that publication Slater's did not have a price for any of the kits, I do believe that Slater's also hinted to the gazette that they are looking to releasing kits for all coach types as well as some of the goods stock.

Which of the coach kits is being released first?
