Re: Spam

Hi everyone,
?
OK – I was getting a bit bored with some of my other modelling projects, and needed some respite, so decided to start a micro layout. (I am not sure why everyone in narrow gauge will never be happy until they build a micro layout – however this seems to the way things happen?)
?
It is on the footprint of an A3 piece of paper, and the (“layout” if that is what its referred to?) is named “A3014”.
?
It is now in the advanced scenery stage. I will post some pictures when it is complete.
?
Cheers

Modelling News

开云体育

I recently?got some loco kits from Mark Clark. Also a couple of wrightlines wagon kits from ebay. I'll be kit bashing the guards van and GVT van. Planning on swapping the ends so I have a tool van and then opening out the end windows so I can model the inside of the brake van.?
?
I'm still looking for a few more bits and pieces of kit stock.
?
I can't decide whether to start a model based on the station layout (two bays, and no run around) at Statfold, or to do something more ambitious; Iain Rice's plan for Gairloch really appeals to me.

Parking at Burton

All

Following the announcement on the front page of Narrow News, I would like to clarify the situation regarding parking in Burton for the 7mmNGA Exhibition and AGM on Saturday 13th June.

I had a letter from the Council which explained that the large office block next to the Town Hall had been sold by the Council to Burton College and was being extended into part of the car park. This meant that the usual entrance had been closed but there is still access to the car park from the side road and the Council still have 30 spaces (which will increase to 50 after the work is complete) as well as access to a further 30 spaces outside the Children's Centre at the other end of the car park (these are only available at weekends)

So the end result is that there should be 60 spaces this year and 80 when the work is complete next year although some of this will probably be taken by exhibitors and traders. Also remember that charges apply?for the use of the Council car park.

Up to 2 hours - ?1.00
Up to 3 hours - ?1.80
Up to 4 hours - ?4.40
Over 5 hours - ?5.50

However?roadside parking is available in many of the side streets nearby without charge but it is your responsibility to?check the restrictions (although most of these only apply Monday to Friday as it's close to the Station and the limits are there to prevent commuters parking all day). Please respect our neighbours and park sensibly.

The letter from the Council recommends the use of alternative car parks near to the Station?but check where you park as it all seems to be one car park but the different coloured line markings indicate who the land belongs to and how much you pay. See below a report from our local spy . . . .

Been at work today on a shift where I park in Burton.

The grain warehouse car park is indeed split into two, part being the station overflow car park and the rest attached to the grain warehouse, which used to be Council offices, but is now a Travelodge.

Down the bottom of the car park, it's not marked, but all the spaces are marked in white paint and are railway ones.

Up by the grain warehouse itself, the spaces are marked. Railway part is marked out with white lines and clearly painted 'Railway Station Parking'. These are ?4 per day.

The ones attached to the Grain Warehouse are marked in yellow paint and have 'Excel Parking Bays' written by them, Excel being the parking management company. They are ?3 per day but also charges per hour for those staying shorter times.

If they catch you parking in the wrong bit with the wrong ticket, you'll get a fine!

I hope that this temporary situation does not put off any of our visitors

Re: Bob Barlow

RIP Bob Barlow

?

Bob had been a friend for more than thirty years.....a fine modeller of both SG and NG railways and an even better editor of model railway magazines. ?

Model Railway Journal would have been good (think back to what else was around in the early 1980s) but, giving due respect to founding co-editor Gerry Beale and publisher Paul Karau, it would have been nowhere near as influential, innovative and thought provoking, even crusading at times, without Bob's hand on the red pen and his mind behind the green eyeshade. ?When he retired many readers thought it was the end of the world but, fortunately, he and publisher Paul Karau had created such a strong ethos that, a few minor hiccups apart, MRJ has continued to thrive and follow the principles that Bob established. ?

NGIRM had all the same attributes but with?a much tighter focus; Bob's assumption of the roles of editor and publisher was the best news that devotees of the Review could have had but now he has been taken, much too soon, from his family and friends.

We shall mourn the loss of our friend at Cambridge on Tuesday but, I hope, we shall also celebrate the life of a man who, though his enthusiasm and skillful communication, had a profound influence on so many people and helped to shape the development of the finer end of the model railway hobby.

Re: Bob Barlow

An absolute tragedy. I knew both Bob and Iain Rice back in the 'good
old days'. Bob's passing will be felt in the world of model
piblishing as well, 'Narrow Gauge Review' and the 'New 'Finescale
Railway Modelling' to my mind are well ahead of the opposition.
However, the greatest loss will of course be to his family to whom I
send my deepest sympathies.

Re: Bob Barlow

Yes indeed, very sad and unexpected.

MRJ under his editorship was one of my major early inspirations and I feel lucky to have met him since he took over publication of the Review. He was an O14 modeller too with
Ynys Gwyntog as featured in issue 100, and (I understand) a layout based on the Lincolnshire potato railways.

A great loss to the hobby, but I'm sure this is as nothing to the loss to his family and close friends.

Re: 014 back to back gauge - they have arrived

I received one today as well and think it will be a very useful little bit of kit.

It is dimensionally perfect in respect of the back-to-back, which is important.

If I have any criticism it is that it is small, I might have hoped for slightly longer legs to cope with wheels larger than just those for wagons and carriages.?

I'll have to offer it up to my Fairlie wheels, for instance, and it definitely will be too short for Garratt driving wheels.

Roy/All,

I appreciate your concerns that the standards relate to the wheels you originally produced, so I thought it would be useful to measure my locos and rolling stock which use other types wheels. Results are:

Wagons - mainly Alan Gibson OO wheels re-gauged (I'm assuming these are RP25) - 12.4mm
Manning Wardle 2-6-2 - Alan Gibson wheels intended for the 7mm L&B kit - 12.4mm
Baldwin 4-6-0 - very old Alan Gibson wheels intended for OO/EM - 12.4mm
K1 Garratt - coarse Romford/Markits wheels on 14mm axles re-profiled with Scale7 tool - 12.3mm

From the above I would assert that the modern fine RP25 standard wheels set to 12.4mm will work just fine.

Interesting the B to B part of my old RCL standards gauge (which O confess I rarely use) seems to measure at 12.6mm. I don't believe my 15 year old (but carefully looked after) Mitutoyo vernier caliper is at fault.

Regards
John

Hi all,

The back to back gauges I ordered have arrived, I have attached a picture.

I have a put a calliper over them and they are all with 0.01mm, which I think is very good, given that my calliper is only a cheap digital one they could well be all spot on.

If you have not done so already please email me directly with your address details, but only if you have already expressed an interest in them. ?If you have not I have small surplus which I will sell on first come first served basis. ?If any one drops out then I will also be able to sell another gauge.

Once I have every ones details I will mass email every one with payment details, then I will get these in the post. ?

To confirm the price ?7 plus 80p postage in the UK, overseas at cost.

I just want to remind everyone I am not doing this for commercial gain, so please be patient with me, I have a full time job so I will get these posted as soon as I am able.

Thanks again to everyone who expressed an interest and made this possible.
