Mod Level changes between apps?

With the proliferation of digital modes and the apps that work with them I've started to notice that I have to constantly go back and adjust the ALC on the rig. I'm on Windows10 and I have set the ALC up for VARAHF/VARAC. But when I go to Soundmodem/EasyTerm I see my ALC is way up. Is it necessary to revisit the speaker level each time I change apps? Since the last time I was operating packet
in the early 90s I didn't jump from mode to mode so it was not a problem. I'm running into it going from Pkt to PSK31 on FLDigi to VARAC. If that's the way it works then I just need to incorporate it into my process. I just want to know if I'm doing something wrong?

October's Packet Bulletin Net Will Start On Sunday 10/22/23

Hello Packeteers,

The October Packet Bulletin Check-In Net will open for check-ins on?
Sunday October 22nd @ 0000 UTC.

Please see the check-in instructions below along with any possible?
monthly challenges for anyone willing to give it a try.

A list of current check-ins are available at the link below.

INSTRUCTIONS:

The coming months will be about sending standard text based forms that?
can be easily used via Packet Radio Messaging.

Below the dashes is a text version of the ICS-213 form, this month I am
asking that you fill out the form and send it back as a Packet Bulletin.

To: SB PKTNET@USA
Subject: ICS213, Your Call, Your Name, Your Town, Your State

(If you would like to keep a clean usable copy of this form then C&P
all the text between the hash marks below and save as to a new Text File?
named (ICS-213)

Then C&P the form into your new packet bulletin fill out each section as?
shown in the example below the blank form and send it out in your newly?
formed bulletin.

The purpose is to give Packet Radio a job and to make it useful in the?
event of a real ECOMMS event, please give it a try and share with your?
local groups or clubs to drum up some new packet users!

If you have any questions please reply to this message or email me at

Re: Network105 Spotlighted on Ham Nuggets YouTube Show!

To add one can always decode hf 5 off an sdr via online .
I have done this by using online SDR and soundmodem .

Good tool to check ones own hf transmissions if you can decode from a distant SDR , helps set up levels etc to optimisze .

Hoping to be more active as soon as I get my loop for indoors built.

cheers?

Re: 10m

You can legally use 1200bd on 10 meters, but not with FM, it would need to be SSB.? Below is a copy/paste from an FCC doc:

" 2. Background. Section 97.307(f) limits the symbol rate (also known as the baud rate) ¨C
the rate at which the carrier waveform amplitude, frequency, and/or phase is varied to transmit
information2 ¨C for high frequency (HF) amateur radioteletype (RTTY)/data transmissions to 300 bauds for
frequencies below 28 MHz (except the 60 meter band), and 1200 bauds in the 10 meter (28-29.7 MHz)
band.3 The digital code used to encode the signal being transmitted must be one of the codes specified in
section 97.309(a) of the Commission¡¯s rules, but an amateur station transmitting a RTTY or data emission
using one of the specified digital codes may use any technique whose technical characteristics have been
publicly documented, such as CLOVER, G-TOR, or PACTOR. "

The entire document is here:

The doc isn't specifically about 10m data transmissions, but it does verify that the FCC allows 1200bd there.? I forget where it is, but they have another section in their rules regarding which emission modes can be used for data on the various ham bands, which rules out FM on 10m.

28.105 LSB is what had been used before. ? I believe years back the Canadian hams had FM up around 28.186. From there I believe they had a high speed uplink? to vhf/uhf, to where they could traverse much of Canada.?? It has been a long time so details are a bit sketchy in my head.?

?I had seen discussions on forums from the past where there was quite a discussion as to whether an op could use 1200B packet on 10m., but not enough for me to feel comfortable trying it.

For keybd, 28.105 would work ok, but for setup with BBS/keybd, something up around 28.135 usb? +-? traffic, might be a better choice.?? Just a thought.

Auto control segment =28.120-28.189.

Been listening on 28105 1700c 300b LSB for couple of days now and here in PA have only seen decodes for K4RVA and KF5QEK.

So far, not so great. :(

On Wednesday, I could hear a lot of faint packet activity at 28105 LSB, but Direwolf only decoded a few packets throughout the entire day. I did run SoundModem simultaneously for a while, which did decode a few more packets than Direwolf, but still not very much at all. I tried connecting to the one station I decoded, and I could -barely- hear what sounded like a response, but I could not decode it.

Thursday, I didn't have as much time to play radio throughout the day. I did see one station connect to me a couple of times, but it seemed to timeout and disconnect very quickly. Nothing else in the 3-4 hours that I was on the band.

I'll try again today, once the MUF starts approaching 10m, and if I have some time I might work on improving my 10m antenna situation.

I am curious to try it on Saturday too, and see how the solar eclipse will affect propagation on 10m.

Cheers,
Steve K4RVA

Re: HF Packet + Misc.

As an addition, two other options to try Robust Packet are the Teensy TNC and the WinRPR application.

Correct, Network105 packet started on 20 meters in 1986 and members have been populating 30 and 40 meters recently. No official "Network105" on 10 meters :-)? But that doesn't mean we're not interested in hearing about your HF packet fun over there.
?
Robust Packet uses 500 Hz of bandwidth with 60 Hz spacing between carriers, and uses OFDM with 8 DBPSK or DQPSK carriers. On 200 bps mode, it uses BPSK. For 600 bps mode, DQPSK is used. For both modes, each subcarrier runs at a constant rate of 50 Bd. Like Packet, Robust Packet uses the AX.25 frame protocol for transmitting data. Compared to Packet, Robust Packet has better resistance against multipath propagation and fading.
?
Unfortunately, there aren't many Robust Packet operators in the world compared to other modes and the TNCs can get expensive.
?
Since VARA isn't packet and lacks all the advantages that packet has, I don't bother with it. But don't let me stop you. Have fun with all the modes!

While you are correct that packet took a backseat during the "Packet Apocalypse," a phrase I coined for the internet killing packet - AX.25 packet has become EXTREMELY popular in recent years. I guess I'm a victim of too many You Tube videos that are passing mis-information. I saw a video that said Network105 is the same group no matter what band you're on. So I mistakenly believed that 28.105 was where you are on 10M. I have now seen that you are predominantly on 20M (14.105). So I've been sitting on 28.105 LSB and not seeing much activity. It was pretty exciting because gateways and portals were being setup then to start interfacing packet with 'The Internet'. Then the internet took over and packet began its decline. Now I'm just trying out all the digital modes to find which works out the best for me. Since I'm a Tech I only have privileges on the low end of the band. I can't do FM further up.

?I'm using a sound card based transceiver (IC-7300). I do still have my PK-88 hardware TNC from the 2M days. I'm very intrigued by VARA. I have it installed and have made several contacts and had nice QSOs with others. I'd like to be able to do Packet or Olivia using the VARA-HF modem. I've tinkered with FT8/4. I'm trying to get FLDigi working to do PSK31 and RTTY. But, nostalgia has brought me back to packet and I'm curious about the differences between old AX.25 packet and Robust Packet. Lots of things to learn and for this 70+ year old I want to keep the ol' gray-matter flexible.

Thanks for the welcome, Chris. I look forward to seeing what packet can do now.

I'm new to Network105. I'm setting up a little station on 10M and would be interested in the guidelines for operating a good packet station. Where is the document you're referencing here? I checked the files and the Wiki and can't find hide nor hair of it. I did a search and can not find a webpage for Network105. Maybe I'm challenged but where can I find a copy of the guidelines?
