Sorry Folks, This is THE END

I am ready to jump ship.

That is, once someone has a ship to jump to.

Yahoo, in their infinite idiocy, have once again foisted upon us a new "upgrade", without warning and without asking whether we wanted it. This new UI/skin or whatever they're calling it is a total crapfest. This was the last straw, so I am no longer going to be running this group on Yahoo. Owner Ray is once again MIA, having been in the "Bouncing" email list for over 3 months, so I don't expect him to take over anytime soon.

If any of those who have downloaded content in response to my previous posts on the subject, or anyone willing to do so now, would like to take up the torch and host/manage a replacement group elsewhere, you are quite welcome to do so. If there are more than one of you, I leave it up to yourselves to work out the details. You may use this message board to do so if you wish. I will provide whatever assistance I can, and will leave this group open to member posts without moderation (members currently on moderation, I hope to have all of you on normal status shortly but if I miss anyone, I will still be notified by email and will admit your posts and update your status as I am able).

The group will be closed to new members until further notice. I will also be updating the homepage text alerting anyone arriving there to the situation.

If an alternative to this group approved by formal or informal consensus of the members here is underway in a timely manner, I will happily update this group's homepage again to redirect any new arrivals to the new alternative site.

Best regards, and hoping to see you all soon in greener (oranger?) pastures,

I'm so sorry to hear that despite being mostly a lurker. This list
is/was a wonderful place to learn.

I can provide resources in my dreamhost account to host a new list /
files / etc. Currently I'm a bit tight with free time but we can try
to import the messages in mailman. What happened to the manual backup
of the group ?

cheers.

How about a Google group? Doing a quick search, there are lots of other electronics related lists referring to nixies but none dedicated to them that I've found. I like the google interface--it's clean and intuitive.

ianmartinphotography@...

Check that--there's one group with one member:

The home page says that the owner is planning one--but of course there's nothing to prevent someone from this forum from starting our own. I'd volunteer, but I'm a newbie and have yet to complete my first clock. (But I'm almost done!)

ianmartinphotography@...

Wait, one more--dedicated to a very slick-looking Nixie Tube clock (which may be something else besides a clock?) Very cool looking though:

I can see I won't be participating in too many Yahoo groups with this format (I currently subscribe to about 20!). This is really bad!!

I can provide physical hosting on the Sun in my garage (5mbit upstream), if
that is of use to anyone at all.

Here's the new group I just created for nixie lovers. If someone more experienced wants to takeover, just let me know:

I had posted this as its own thread, but it's not showing up...

Hello folks,

I turned on my omputer today and found these mails, and I am a little surprised, my Yahoo looks the same as it has ever looked, frankly I see no difference.

But in case the "crap" returns, what should we do? The Google group from Nick seems a good option, but weren't there discussions about a "real" forum lately given all the disadvantages of mailing lists?

I think this could be the time that we settle a whole new system, i.e. a PHP based forum, they are really easy to create, the only problem is webspace.

Brian,

You just need to locate the cookie associated with this group, save it as a
file and then tell wget to use that file with the connection. I've done it
before on various sites and it works well. You will find that if your
running FF 3 the cookies are in a sqlite database so you'll have to extract
the one you need for the list site with a bit of SQL. An easy way to dump
all the cookies is to go to
$HOME/.mozilla/firefox/<whatever-is-your-directory> and do:-

$ sqlite3 -separator ' ' cookies.sqlite 'select * from moz_cookies' >
cookies.txt

From this you can locate the specific cookie and just save it to a file that
you reference with 'wget --load-cookies filename'

Hope this helps,
Steve

There are no changes evident here too. I run two other groups and they look the same as they ever have.

Perhaps it's being done country by country, or has anyone else in the UK already experienced a change ?

Assuming you'll continue to moderate, I can host the list on my MailMan
system. Just say the word and I can have it set up in a few minutes.
One good thing about neon-john.com, it'll be there as long as I'm living
which will hopefully be a few more decades.

Same as it ever was for me too, in the UK. What were/are they doing?

It's back to "normal" (at least for now). I hate it when idiots think they have to change something just to make it look more "flashy".

[Of course, I like the warm glow of a nixie tube better than the sharp, but more lifeless 7-segment LED display too.]

Odd, I haven't noticed any difference, what did they change?

Maybe my adblocker filters out all the new stuff?

Me neither - I subscribe to several yahoo groups using email (non-HTMLof course) only & haven't
seen any difference - I've not been following this thread - is it to do with accessing via the web
interface, or with HTML email?
