Re: issues with FLRIG and FLMSG

My apologies for the delay, I have been out of town.

First:

- FLRIG will terminate?abnormally even when I am only receivikng

- CAT control works stably with hamlib, Win;link Packet/soundmodem, Wink?HF VARA, and WSJTX

It does not sound like RF.

I have PTT performed by FLRIG.

I have:

- IC-7000

- Signallink

- FLDIGI 4.2.04.00

- FLRIG 2.0.05

As to resetting the transceiver filter configuration:

- this occurs?only with FLRIG, not with any other software

The data I Have suggests the issues are with FLRIG, but I am unable to effectively?debug further?without some guidance.

I have used FLDIGI?for perhaps?10 years but always with hamlib.? We now need finer filter control and hamlib does not?provide this support in FLDIGI.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Don

I do not have an Icom 7000 but it sounds like something is configured incorrectly.

As a note, I have used FLRIG / FLMSG / FLAMP with three different Icom HF SSB rigs and have not seen any of the problems you describe - with three different Win10 computers.

It might help if you provide more details on how you have the software configured, and what is the computer type. Do you have any long (poorly shielded) usb cables?

Could the problem be with a USB / virtual COM port adapter which used to happen to me when I used USB - Prolific converters.
We can’t blame the software if the hardware (USB cable, COM port setup, etc.) is the real problem. I threw out all of my Prolific usb hardware.

How do you have Fldigi config for PTT (send)?
Do you check the “Use FLRIG for PTT and rig control”?

I know from past experience that redundancy (for PTT) is not a good idea.
So don’t choose PTT via a “separate COM port using RTS” and then tell Fldigi to use PTT via a CAT port.

So what is working?
Receive audio ok with VARA HF?? With Fldigi?? With WSJT-X?

If the computer is “resetting” the config data, then something is really amiss with the computer - power glitches?

I also had a ton of issues with (cheap) usb cables picking up RFI and resetting all kinds of software. Even the mouse and keyboard cable were suspect, so I put on toroids on EACH end of the cable.
So be sure that all of the issues are not related to “RF in the shack”.
Are you using an “end-fed” wire on HF bands? They are notorious for RF in the shack.

I know this can be frustrating - multiple failures of software - but likely the solution is something simple.

You might check with other Icom 7000 owners - are there issues with that particular rig? What kind of sound card (and cable)?
I do not hear of any problems (usually) with Icom 7300’s, 7610’s, and more modern rigs, with built in sound cards and a usb port for CAT and PTT.

best of luck getting these issue resolved,

I am using:

- Dinah sound card

- I am enabling config>rig control>C-Media PTT> use C-media PTT checked

Test works and lights the red PTT light on the DINAH.

I have been using DRA sound cards and Fldigi (mostly on 2m FM Icom and Kwnd rigs) using the C-Media RA adapter for PTT.

However, I have found “redundancy” for PTT in Fldigi is not good; that is, do not also select PTT via a CAT port, and likewise do not select PTT via a hardware RTS com port.

In certain radios, watch out for that RTS/CTS option (Yaesu rigs).

If you are having problems using the Fldigi and RA adapter option for PTT, are you also using some other program for “rig control” like WSJT-X or Winlink VARA, or a logging app?

It could be the typical “COM port conflict” issue even though RA adapter is not a COM port.

And remember that the DRA sound cards are STEREO, but Flidig normally just sends TX audio (mono) to the LEFT channel.
DRA sound cards expect the TX audio to be on the RIGHT channel (jumper settings in the sound card).
In Fldigi, select under the RIGHT channel: put TX audio on BOTH left and right.

I also disable the VOX in the DRA sound cards - more jumpers to disable.

What specific radio and which DRA sound card?

Flamp 2.2.11.14 fixed the compatibility issue with 2.2.11 and the file is readable when I use compression. Thanks for the fix.

The other thing I noticed is when I added the file to Flamp I didn't receive the message that recommended compression. That makes sense because it was a small file.

Robert,

One of the local stations just did a test. We are finding out that if both stations are using 2.2.11.13 it works with compression. If the receiving station is an earlier version then it fails using compression. I know it doesn't make sense to use compression because it actually adds time to the transmission on a small file. But I think it's cool to send it that way. Also, it's good to keep in mind that for a real event everyone should use the stable version.

The topic for this class is “Rig Control and PTT”?? (with Fldigi and FLRIG software).
(we are not yet coverning Winlink modes nor FT8 - that comes later in the year).

Here is my?? FLRIG? config for an Icom 7610
The typical baud is 19,200 or even 9600 baud, but I picked 115k to see if it would work (it did).

Not all radios will show all of these options
Read the FLRIG help guides first!

When you press the INIT button, the diamond should light up showing "connected".
It that does not happen, check COM port numbers (Windows might renumber these after an update).

Some rigs make PTT simple - just do it over a CAT port.? But not all HF SSB rigs have a PTT "command" on a CAT port.
READ YOUR MANUAL.

Some rigs have a secondary COM (dumb) port and can do a PTT or SEND via the RTS pin.
The RTS pin goes "high" (+ voltage) and a relay or transistor switch grounds a PTT pin on a data port (you hope).

Some sound cards (SignaLink) simply use an internal VOX circuit in the SignaLink, not the VOX on the radio itself (use for PHONE VOX).
And the DRA (Masters Communications) sound cards use the RA (adapter) option for a PTT (send) and not a COM port.

Yes, I agree - the PTT options can be confusing.
Do NOT choose two options for a PTT? - redundancy is not good.

I would like to talk about the pros and cons of Rig Control in general (based on my experience0
For some ops, "rig control"? is essential (radio has small dial touch screen).?
And some ops like to operate their rig from a remote location over the internet (later topic).

I have an Icom 7610 and an Icom 705 with touch screens.?
If I use FLRIG to do the rig control (CAT) it is easy once I identify the COM port (baud, stop bits, etc.)
Every option is controlled with my mouse.
But this is frosting on the digi mode cake.

I am hoping that there are folks on the ZOOM class (10AM to 11AM) who can guide rookies who have specific rigs: Icom 7300, Yaesu FTXXX, Kenwood 590,890
For some older rigs (FT847 or Icom 706 or Knwd 440) or less popular rigs, we may not have a local expert on Zoom.

Please let me know if you are available to join the ZOOM class on Saturday April 06 from 10 AM to 11 AM.
Remember we are encouraging ROOKIES to take part, so keep the explanations for PTT and CAT on YOUR rig simple.
We are holding this to a one-hour limit via Zoom, but I can stay a while longer listening on 7068 kHz.

These are stations I copied from 1745 to 1815. I'm not sure if I got checked in, myself. I tried a couple times before 1800. Condx here in NorCal quickly became too poor to copy anyone calling except once, and there was no discernible followup w/East NCS. No noise, just no signal here.

I'll be watching next week.

I use a TS-990 transceiver.? It switches back and forth depending on which audio input is active.? So FLDIGI sends through the USB port on this rig, and voice comes through the microphone.? PTT (actually "data vox") triggers via the USB port, and PTT voice is via the microphone or foot pedal depending on which voice user device I'm using, usually headset and foot pedal.? On this radio, the filters and EQ can be configured differently for intentional voice mode or intentional data mode, selected by the front panel controls on the radio.? In this case, it can be important to select the correct EQ as my headset default mic audio is rather "bassie" and I make it communications quality voice using the built in EQ on the radio.? In the case of data, you want a flat audio band-pass, but one button press on the front panel of the radio solves that problem.? If someone gripes about my voice audio after I've switched back to voice, one button press takes care of that.? With the desk mic for voice mode, the audio default is pretty much communications quality, so not a problem.

All of my Kenwood radios, TS-440, TS-570, TS-940 when using the SignaLink connected to the accessory audio socket on the back of the rig, and this super fantastic TS-990 with the USB audio, switch back and forth with hardly a thought.? Receive audio is always present on the accessory audio socket, and with all of the fancy digital noise reduction on the TS-990, one has to remember to disable all of that for data mode.? The analog data audio turns to schmutz when it hits the noise reduction when it's active.

I've done this with an Icom IC-706 Mk II G and got favorable results.? The noise reduction in that radio is hardly worth messing with so dual or alternate mode operation is easy as well.? Use the jack on the back of the radio for connection to the SignaLink or equivalent and you're all set.

So, there's lots of "it depends".? Yep, some of it switches back and forth without user intervention, but conditions requiring or desiring noise reduction and equalization for voice comm have to be overridden for data mode operation.?? If you can hear them OK without the noise reduction circuit turn on for voice, live with the noise.? Being familiar with all of those buttons or where the heck they put a function in the menu on the rig is helpful.? I did a lot of practice before going on the air in mixed mode and made a short cheat sheet, especially with the TS-570.? The features are there, but buried in the menu.? All of those wonderful buttons that are getting harder to see as I age on the front panel of the TS-990 require rehearsal but, once rehearsed and memorized they've made it easy.

This is very much dependent on the transceiver.

Is there a way to have FLDIGI put a radio into digital mode just when sending a digital message but let it stay in voice mode during receive and when transmitting voice with the mic?
