upgrade firmware

Please what is the difference between NanoVNA-H-MS_20220831.dfu and NanoVNA-H-SI_20220831.dfu ?
I have NanoVNA-H Version: 0.4.4-1-g42cc6a8 and I don't know which firmware to choose from the two mentioned. Thank you very much for your advice.

The two are for the Silicon Labs Si5351 or the MS5351 clone. You need to know which is used in your NanoVNA

Gary thanks for the reply. How can it be found out? Do I have to disassemble the box and read it from the IO?

I don't have one, but I think you can check your currently installed version of firmware and it will be obvious. Look in the menu system to display the current firmware version.

Gary,
unfortunately the version doesn't say anything about it. But it is on IO
5351
BAJD

I'll try to find it online
Thanks so much for your help so far

From the description, it looks like a Chinese clone of the si5351, but I'm not sure. the board is v. 3.4 and the TCXO is 26 MHz.
Thanks in advance for any advice

Based on what the code authors have stated, the two builds are identical with the exception of an advanced mode setting determining wich chip you have. To that end, you can load either and simply change to the correct setting. On many units, mthe de ices with the later MS chip will have an "M" in either the model or serial on the unit label (I forget which), but not all do this,

All resolved. I took a risk and flashed the firmware for the SI5351 using the NanoVNA app. Everything seems to be working. I am happy.

As I said prior, there is no code difference, and either version will run. The issue is that the differences in the two chips will cause some off results if the wrong one is selected. If rhings ever seems goofy, change the setting and see if things improve (you do *NOT* need to reload!).

During the pandemic there was a shortage of si5351 clock chips and Hugen (and some cloners) used a Chinese clone of this chip with a MS prefix. In some ways this chip was better but it had different characteristics so there is a software selectable option to select which chip is installed. The SI version defaults to original chip and MS version to the Chinese clone. But in either version you can change it in the menu.

Your NanoVNA-H Version: 0.4.4-1-g42 is very old and was released in 2019 so you have the SI chip.

Roger

The MS chip is not a clone. It is or was used in place of the SI chip due to unavailability of the SI chip.
Check the back of your NanoVNA.
If there is a MS at the end of the serial number, then use the MS version. If not use the SI version.
This has been addressed before.

Thank you all for the valuable information. The NanoVna works with the new firmware without any problems.

This is how my (bought in 2023) H4_MS Model looks
Note the _MS at the end of the HW Version

And yes ... You can change the setting in the GUI too , if you have loaded the wrong one.
Just remember to do a save after changing it.
