There has been a lot of discussion about transmission lines recently. I thought the group might be interested in some very useful free tools.

The first one is TLD - Transmission Line Details by AC6LA. You can calculate impedance transformations for a wide variety of commercial coaxial and balanced transmission lines. It also does loss calculations, plots VF and Zo and much more. A lot of work has gone into this program over the years and it is a free download at the link below. The "spinner dials" are very useful for observing changes.

The second program is TLW (Transmission Line for Windows) by Dean Straw (N6BV) one of the editors of the ARRL Antenna Book. It is a good complement to TLD because it can plot what is happening along the transmission line and can also design "tuner" matching networks like L, Pi and T.

Available as a free download from the ARRL Web site at this link.

Though I can't make the TLW3 to Graph anything on a modern Win10, get Run Time Error 339.
I have tried all the different compatiblity modes but no luck. If anyone knows how to fix this,
please give a hint.

To install the update, you need the original TLW program from the ARRL Antenna Book CD installed on your computer.

Hi Perdard , I get also the same error message on Windows XP sp3 .
After that , I dowloaded the TeeChart5.ocx , and put it in the same directory of the application , and the program is working .
Another problem is that is not possible to draw the tuner. To do it the program needs some pictures.

TNX Maurizio, that did the trick on my win7 machine except the drawing of the tuner it's missing " Form2Network3.bmp " that I am assuming it makes but have no clue where it hides it

The download link that I gave from the ARRL is missing a couple of files. I have put everything required in one zip file. I have verified that it now runs on Windows 7 and windows 8.1 (64 bit systems). (don't have windows 10).

To run the program do the following:

1. Download TLW-3.zip from my Google Drive


2. Unzip to somewhere in your My Documents Folder

3. You will need to manually copy the file TeeChart5.ocx to the C:\windows\SysWOW64 directory and register it with Windows using the regsvr32 command. Both require administrator access
I have included a batch file TLW3-Install.bat that does this for you. You need to right click it and run as administrator. You can look at it with the Notepad editor to make sure it is safe if you like.

4. Just click on TLW3.exe to execute the program. You can create a shortcut if you want to run it from an icon on your desktop.

Please let me know if it works for you....

Transmission Line Details seems to run just fine under Wine in Linux.

Roger's TLW also runs in Wine on Linux.

Hello Roger,

I have a PC with Windows 7 Pro SP1 32bit (German).
C:\windows\SysWOW64 does not exist on my OS, and your batch file reports an error.
On my 2 other Win10 64bit PCs TLW3 works ok after running TLW3-Install.bat.
I get the Error 339 when I exit TLW3.

Help is much appreciated.

My batch file is for 64 bit systems only.

Try manually copying TeeChart5.ocx to C:\WINDOWS\system32

Then run TLW3.exe
