NanoVNA-saver and Windows 10 #nanovna-h4 #nanovna-saver

I ran forensics on the com port the NanoVNA is connected to and started putty. See attached. It appears the two initially communicate, but when I hit a CR, the NanoVNA does not respond and putty locks up. All putty parameters are correct. I get something very similar with NanoVNA-saver. As soon as the computer sends a URB_BULK out the NanoVNA does not respond and the program crashes.

netwtek,

Try to change the assigned port number using the COM port properties (right cick on the device + port folder and advanced button). That can help in some situation.

Unplus, replug the NanoVNA and check if it has now the new port number.

Unfortunately, I was not as lucky as tk5ep. I deleted the driver, rebooted
,Windows found new device and assigned a different com port (just like tk5ep).
Still no communications with Putty, NanoVNA-saver, OR NanoVNA for android.

I have tried two different Windows 10 computers, two different android devices
(phone and table) both with an OTG cable, two different USB cables, AND
minicom on Linux Mint with no response from the NanoVNA-H4.

I thought about trying to reset the NanoVNA to defaults, but from what I
understand, it can only be done through a terminal connection which I cannot
establish.
Solution: read and use this: /g/nanovna-users/message/10419

this is true for windows 7, but since the driver is missing or inadequate, you should do the same.
When you delete a bad driver with USBDeview, you should not wait for windows to look for a driver, but you should install it. The DeFuse or the ST-Link or the virtual drive.
You will see these driver programs when they work correctly. Otherwise, only USBDeview will show you what you have connected to your computer since the system was installed. So you have to solve it and not rely on the windows operating system.

That's all.

The topic has gotten fairly long and you probably didn't read all the messages. He said he has no problem going into DFU mode and loading firmware via DFU Demo. Its only when he tries communicating via the STM32 virtual com port that things break down.

- Herb

Herb is correct, and (with his help and others) I have pretty well eliminated all possibilities other than a hardware issue with the NanoVNA-H4 I received. I have a fellow ham who should be receiving a NanoVNA-H sometime next week. He is going to try to get his working with Windows 10 and android when he gets it. Once he gets it working, he is going to bring it over to try it on my computer and android devices. This should help finally determine if it is an issue with NanoVNA-H4 or my equipment. I will post outcome.

Thanks to all have given me help in troubleshooting the issue!

Rick,
One additional comment. Both DFU mode and VCP communications is done over the same USB data pins. When you were able load firmware using the DFU mode it indicated to me that your hardware was fine and there was a problem with the VCP driver. After you had the same problem on a second Windows 10 PC, and also couldn't connect using an android device, the certainty of the problem being a VCP driver issue went out the window for me.

- Herb

Thank you for the information Herb. You have been extremely helpful. I was wondering if the same data pins were used since I was thinking it might be a bad connection. From what you have indicated, it does not sound like a hardware issue. This problem is really baffling, and I am really not sure what can be done to resolve it.

Hi Herb, what can I do if the "cho45" does not find my NanoVNA-H4? The device is successfully installed as COM4 - code 0x0. The web app says "no compatible devices found". I use Win 10 64-bit and the last Chrome. thx

Milo?,
I would try the following:

1. If you are not using an OTG cable connected to your NanoVNA-H4, try that.
2. Try using the NanoVNA App from the Goggle App Store and see if it works for you instead of the web app.
3. Try using your cellphone (with OTG cable) to connect to the NanoVNA-H4 using the web app or the Goggle App Store apk.
4. Try another USB-C to USB_A cable.

Hopefully, one of the above will work. If not, I suggest you run NanoVNA-Saver on Win 10.

- Herb

Hello Herb,

Thank you for you quick answer.

The Nano VNA App works fine on my cellphone (Android - Huawei Mate 10 Pro).
I am serching for something I could use on my notebook (Win 10 64-bit Czech
version, 8GB RAM).

I tried to connect my Nano VNA H4 to my PC with the supplied cable and I
tried another USB-A to USB-C cable also.
The result is always the same: Device successfully installed as COM4 and
"cho45" cannot find it.

Thank you, Milo?

On your Win 10 64-bit I would suggest running one of the PC applications instead of the "cho45" web application. I consider Rune's NanoVNA-Saver to be the best choice but other user's have their own favorites. These are the ones that I know of:

1. NanoVNA-Saver, currently ver 2.2, .
2. NanoVNASharp v3.0, .
3. nanoVNA Partner, .
4. TAPR VNAR4.6, /g/nanovna-users/files/NanoVNA%20PC%20Software/TAPR%20VNA/VNAR4.6.zip .

All the above applications are described on this group's Wiki page at /g/nanovna-users/wiki#Software . Recently RigExpert has released a PC software that supports the NanoVNA but not many users have been able to get it to run on the -H4.

Did you "copy link and paste in PC or Mac Chrome browser",
for Enable Experimental Web Platform features, as in the Wiki?

Herb,

thank you. I tried Saver and it works for me.

It is up to me now lo learn how to use it :-)

Thx, Milo?

Hi Oristo,

I use PC and Win 10 64-bit.

I tried to copy&paste the link to Chrome and I opened the link in the Wiki
also (using Chrome).

The result is the same - not found.

Should not I enable anything in Chrome?

Thx, Milo?

Should not I enable anything in Chrome?
I just reverified on Windows 8.1 64-bit Home with Chrome Browser Version
83.0.4103.97 (Official Build) (64-bit)

This connects and displays from original worse clone nanoVNA:

Another possibility is wrong USB driver; see also Wiki...

Hi Oristo,

I use the standard MS driver in Win 10.
I found in the discussion it should be OK.

But I did not know about the flag in Chrome.

I enabled it and everything works as expected now.

Thank you!

Hi Milo? -

But I did not know about the flag in Chrome.
Thanks for the feedback!
I guess Wiki words were insufficient; adding the screen shot may help..
