Re: Antenna gain

Hello, You need to set up a mini antenna range - with a reference antenna at some distance from the antenna under test, ideally in a wide open area or an anechoic chamber. Hook the Antenna under Test (AUT) to the VNA's Ch0 port, connect the reference antenna with coax to the Ch1 port.? Measure S21. Now put an antenna with known gain as the AUT and do the same measurement. AUT gain (dBi) = Measured S21unk - measured S21std + (Gain of standard) In general, you want your reference antenna (the "probe") to be at a distance of 2 * D^2/lambda, where D is the size of your AUT and lambda is the wavelength (33 cm in your case at 900 MHz).? You also want to be in the "far field" of both antennas - so call it at least 10 wavelengths apart (~ 3 meters in your case).? Doable in a back yard or largish room. Bear in mind that there's a lot of practical details you need to worry about - reflections from surfaces and equipment, signals on the outside of your coax (so you need appropriate chokes). |

dear All,The NanoVNA doesn't go up to the frequency range of that part. There's two ways to measure performance of an I/Q modulator. One uses a VNA and DC sources, the other uses two RF sources and a spectrum analyzer. You hook it up for a straightforward S21 measurement. And then you put DC voltages on the I and Q input. I've used two lab power supplies for this. Then you measure the gain and phase as a function of the I/Q voltages.? For instance, if you have zero on both inputs, the gain should be very low (-40dB).? Put, say, 1 volt on I, and the gain comes up, and the phase is some number. Now, put 1 volt on Q, and zero on I, and you should get the same gain, but the phase should be changed by 90 degrees. Put -1V on I, 0 on Q, and the phase should be 180 degrees, relative to the (1,0) case. What most people do is a sort of sweep I, holding Q at zero, so you get a "gain vs voltage" curve for I. Then do the same for Q. I've done tests where I stepped I and Q over, say, 16 values of each, forming a square grid of points (using an automated system).? From the 256 measurements, you can calculate the gains, the deviations from ideal, any offsets, etc. The other way they are tested is by putting sine waves on I and/or Q and looking for the mixing products at (Fin +/- Fmod) - that's more of a spectrum analyzer approach.

Re: Antenna gain
EV Cables Company LLC
Hello,
I am new to the group, and have not gotten an answer so far. I recently purchased the nanoVNA and want to measure the dBI of several different antennas in the 900-930 Mhz range. Please help this noob to know how to do this. I have tried reading the guides with no luck. Thanks Tom |
dBi measurement
Sorry if this is a repost, I am new to this.
I recently purchased the nanoVPA to measure the dBi of some antennas in the 900-930Mhz range. First is this possible, and second how do I do it. I tried to understand the instructions, and could not find a way to perform the testing. Thanks for your help |

sorry to use this thread, but, anyone in this Group has this quadrature modulator family (brand) or even a similar? I am asking because I would like to check a datasheet info and I cannot measure it properly. Zack, each of those shown are for different series processors, you select the processor series you are working with. The Stm32cube MX is for all processors for creating programs. The programmer is Stm32cubeProgrammer.

# 113 : Non-Zero Length Through in Full Two-Port SLOT Calibration
Abstract The most accurate full two-port calibration of a VNA Vector Network Analyzer requires a Direct or Zero¨CLength Through connection. However, it is not uncommon at all to have one or two cables and a DUT Device Under Test with incompatible connectors, either of different type or of the same type/sex, which enforce then the use of some kind of barrel or adapter. Thus, in this paper, we study these cases of Indirect or Non-Zero Length Through, we estimate the effects of such connections on the measurement uncertainty by using our theory of Differential Error Regions and Intervals DERs/DEIs, and we evaluate our resulting method by applying it in practice to a built two¨Cport network, which was measured against frequency with a SLOT calibrated VNA extended by two lengthy cables. Re: Problem with DfuSe Demo!
Zach, Please try to understand that the company known as ST Microdevices makes many different chips and circuits used in many different types of devices used to make many different machines. This is the NanoVna users group relating to a specific machine using the STM32 chip. You need toinstall The windows virtual com port driver VCP v 15 from STM to use Df program which in turn can connect to, and allow firmware to be updated in the nanovna

Re: Problem with DfuSe Demo!
Zach, I think what you are looking for is the virtual comm port driver from STmicro to attach the nano vna.?I think the name changed to VCP V15.0. Please follow the instructions in the beginners guide from the?link below. It is under updating firmware. You download a zip file, then select the correct version for your?(windows) operating system level.?

Re: Problem with DfuSe Demo!
Greetings, Below is a link too the latest version of One Of Eleven software. This program will allow your PC to communicate with
the Nano VNA device. In a similar fashion to the VNA-Saver application. In fact, some folks prefer to use it instead. As has been stated earlier, this program also has the ability to update device firmware instead of using DfuSe to update device firmware. |
