Phil, why are you concerned about a specific port number? The port numbers

can change, and update when you plug in a device. They do commonly stay the same if you plug the same device into the same port, but can change under various circumstances. You should (with computer and nanoVNA on), and device manager open, unplug the nanoVNA USB cable, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in. When you unplug, a USB port should disappear/deactivate, unless it didn't register originally for some reason (note that it takes Windows a few seconds to scan and update the device list). When you plug back in, a USB port should appear/activate - use whichever port number that is. It should be labeled starting with "STM ...". If there is a little yellow triangle by the new port that appears, the correct driver may not be loaded. If no port appears, something else is wrong. First, try another known good cable. Yes, those USB cables are very prone to error and malfunctioning connectors - so try this first, even though you think your cable is fine. If it still doesn't work, look in device manager's USB Controllers section and see if the port is appearing there - that's where you will see it if the nano is in the firmware update mode. If it doesn't appear either place, something may be wrong with your nanoVNA. Stan On Fri, Dec 16, 2022 at 1:44 PM Jim Lux <jimlux@...> wrote:

Hi guys & gals, For everyone who has replied, to me, before, this If this none doesnt test your computer, Com Port mettle, nothing will. I just UNinstalled all Com Ports; devices not drivers. I shut-down the system, plugged-in - via USB - rig, hub for ham sftwr, NanoVna, directly into the computer, i.e., NO hubs [the hub for Ham sftwr is in a computer, rear, USB port] Upon booting, the Ports displayed - Device Mgr - were 3, 5 & 6 {4 & 7 are missing, now} One port is Enhanced, one Standard; before, I had 2 sets of Enhanced & Standard. I GOOGLEd how to install NEW Com Ports and the instructions were click on the TARGET DEVICE. ADD means to provide a brand-new, not already present thing. WSJT and HRD are working perfectly, one on 5, the other mon 6. Experimenting, I opened PROPERTIES > Port Settings > Advanced and tried adding Port - well, it was only for the "name" of the Port. Ports already in use said IN USE. ONE OF THE PORTS IN USE was Port 8! The port previously used by Nanovna-saver but NOT appearing in DM, now, even for hidden ports. Since neither SAVER nor APP, work and 8 does not appear in any drop-down list, wither goest Port 8???????????????????????????????? USBDeview shows the following for Porty 8: Port_#0005.Hub_#0001 USB to UART Adapter Communication No Yes No No COM8 DEMO 12/16/2022 3:24:57 PM 12/12/2022 3:21:52 PM 04b4 0008 0.01 02 02 01 WF3W CypressSerial @oem5.inf,%CypressPort%;VIRTUALCOMPORT CypressUsbConsoleWindowsDriver64.sys A~ Cypress USB to UART Adapter 3.13.0.59 CypressUsb.NTamd64 oem5.inf USB\VID_04B4&PID_0008\DEMO Removable, UniqueID, SurpriseRemovalOK
When I clicked-on Port 8, I got: USB-to-UART Adapter Communication NOT connected Safe to unplug NOT disbaled NO USB Hub and DEMO as serial #.I got this as an "error" msg: NirSoft Freeware, the URL and >> USB.IDS is not loaded As an aside, howe DOES one, add a new Com Port? But if 8 is being used, do I need to do this? My only consolation is the pizza I took-home, from last night's PackRat [Mt AIry VHF Club] XMAS feast. Couldnt understand why this crowd is so huge, only in Dec meetings... Thanks for any and all help. Ive "met" some mighty, unique Hams. |

A video is great for a demonstration of how to do something. I just disassembled and regreased my Kitchenaid mixer, and frankly, seeing someone else do it made it a lot easier. The written instructions say something like "apply sufficient grease" - seeing someone do it tells you a lot more. But a video to tell me how to install software, entirely from the command line? 1 page of cut and paste from the screen would have met the need, I didn't need to hear someone talking about "now I'm entering the sudo pip install numpy command" and watching them type on the screen. On Dec 16, 2022, at 07:27, John <johnm@...> wrote: |

Anyone thinking of printing out this file, I just finished printing in a booklet form.... 2 pages per 8-1/2 x 11 sheet both sides and it was reproduced quite clearly and very readable using only 19 sheets of paper.? Folding and stapling takes a little manual effort.??

I agree totally, the document is exceptionally well written and illustrated. I will be making a paper copy for reference, somehow it registers better that way. John M0MJE |

Another thing to try is to remove the current device driver associated with that port, and then let Windows reinstall that driver when you plug in the nanoVNA...

In Windows Device Manager, there's an option (I believe under View) to see inactive devices. :-)

Greetings, I can't say for sure whether the solution to your specific questions now may be answered?in the attached document from the files section of this Nano VNA group. But, what I can say, please?do not let the name of the document fool you. There truly is a wealth of information for users at all?levels of this device. I personally refer to it often. The individual who took the time to craft this made?an outstanding contribution.?The name of the document is: Absolute Beginner Guide to The NanoVNA

Hi Group-ees,
I may have made progress with Com Ports, using NANOVNA-APP... When all ports appear in Device Mgr, APP opens with one of these ports chosen and the Conn/DISConn box says DISconnected [I belive the author meant "disconnect" or "connect"] Does this sugnify the next click will disconnect the nanovna? Fully admitting full stupidity and/or ignorance, If the nanovna is, in reality, connected to the sftwr, how can I tell? A self-deprecating way to ask, how do you choose functions, e.g., SWR, RL, etc. How do you initiate a sweep? Can only one graph be displayed at one time? Ive searched for a user's manual/guide/tutorials with only SAA-2N found by GOOGLE. How do guys & gals figure-out this stuff, cold? 73 Phil, WF3W |

(Code 10) The specified request is not a valid operation for the target deviceShort answer, yes, the order in which you turn on and off hardware and software can make a difference in how the ports enumerate. NanoVNA-Saver uses the python serial package (pyserial) for serial port access. If you have python installed (I'm not sure if you install from the .exe, it actually installs python), you can see how pyserial sees your devices. At the command prompt(>), enter: python -m serial.tools.list_ports -v and you'll get a list of what it sees. NanoVNA-Saver looks through that list looking for VID:PID combinations that it recognizes as being a NanoVNA. |
