DaveD,

isn¡¯t this a wonderful demonstration of the spirit of ham radio? This kind of ham is what I try to emulate. You sent out your email of sufficient offers before I could even type another offer. I am available to help if funds run short when the paying up is over.

The annual payment of $220 for this group is due on January 18th. Last year, the co-owners split the fee in half and paid it. This year we are asking for donations from one or more group members.

I can think of two ways for group members to donate.

1. Send donations directly to one of the co-owners (probably me) and when sufficient funds have been collected the co-owner would make the payment to groups.io.

2. Use the groups.io "Donation" facility and ask members to donate directly.

I have some open questions about the groups.io donation feature and have asked them. Also, there are aspects of the Donation facility which I do not like, from privacy and financial account security standpoints.

With respect to the first method listed above, I would be willing to collect donations paid directly to me using PayPal "Friends and Family" up to the $220 and make the payment directly to groups.io. Apart from collecting donations from members, this is what I did last year. If for some reason I were to receive excess funds, the excess would be returned on a LIFO basis.

In any case, we, collectively as a group, will need to come up with the $220. At present, if there are any members who would like to pledge a donation, please send an email to the group owners with the amount that you are willing to pledge. This would allow me to do a bit of planning numbers-wise. As I do not want to lower the S/N ratio of the technical content of the posts, please send any pledges to the owners at [email protected].

Bill,

We are fine. We are using 1.2 GB out of 30 GB storage. The owners did some calculations back when the subscription terms changed and decided that the longevity of the group would be best served by moving to the Premium level.

I don't know offhand with what features you are concerned, but we use quite a few of them.

At this point, we will not be reverting the group to the Basic plan. Contributions are voluntary.? As I have just witnessed, financial support for the group by a handful of members donating small amounts appears to be a workable model, so we will stick with that.

Thanks.

Re: Upcoming payment for this group - Response about a Donation

Thank you, Scott.

At present, there are no multi-anything discounts.

Philosophically speaking, the present owners choose to maintain a "hands-off" approach to the moderation of this group. One or the other of us will step in if members begin to send posts that are not strictly technically-oriented and impersonal. Aside from approving new members, there is not a lot of work that needs to be done on the moderation front. I do not see anything on the administrative side that will affect the longevity of the forum. It is possible that, in the future, one or more additional or replacement moderators and/or owners may be needed, but that is a topic distinct from paying the 2022 annual fee and I don't want to engage with that at present.

The single, most useful thing that forum members can do is to do what they have already been doing, which is to contribute to the understanding of how to purchase and use the NanoVNA in a manner that is consistent with the aims and guidelines of the forum and to introduce potential new users to the product.

As far as paying the developers of the NanoVNA hardware and software, it is my understanding that the original creators are paid through the sales of the instrument. I believe that there are some software developers who have contributed code without being paid. They are certainly welcome to identify themselves as wishing to receive donations for their work, and members are certainly welcome to donate to them. Please feel free to identify, contact and offer to donate to them if you wish. One note of caution about that: I would not want to flood the forum with multiple posts about donations to various individuals. It is certainly OK for an initial post or two to set up comm channels between developers and donors, but once that is accomplished, further communication should occur outside this forum. This forum is intended to be a forum on which users of the instrument may exchange technical ideas and information, independently of the business aspect of the people who developed the product.

As far as video chats, booths at hamfests and other venues, all members should feel free to organize and execute such events. I know that there have been many talks, demos and discussions at ham radio clubs concerning the NanoVNA. This has been and should continue to be a forum-member-driven effort.

I hope that answers your questions.

He made the mistake of sitting across the table from me during dinner. No one was able to provide the answers he was interested in but since I use a commercial VNA for work I took a look. I was very impressed. Now I have several, one portable and 1 each for my 2 radio shacks. I am testing with our radio engineer at work so that we can recommend them for my fellow communication field techs. We'll see how that works out.

I have a few comments:
1. There appears to be more than 10,000 members in this group.
2. I personally benefit big-time from this group. More so than practically any other forum I'm in!
3. I feel that the co-owners SHOULD NOT PAY ANYTHING for running this group and plan to donate.
4. IF ONLY 10% of the members make a donation of one dollar US, that would be enough money to cover almost 5 years of forum fees.
5. Donating $1 US every 4 or 5 years represents a fantastic bargain for the incredible benefits of this wonderful forum.
6. I feel that this little product has been one of the biggest and most affordable benefits to the radio community in a very long time. It deserves an award or something. I can't praise it enough.
7. I have been able to get 19 friends to purchase and learn to use the nanoVNA since i first saw one in December 2019. Everyone loves analyzing everything! Me too...

QUESTIONS for the Co-Owners:
1. Does GroupsIO offer multi-year discounts? Some outfits let one save money if buying a 2 or 3 or 5-year block for example.
2. If there is a bulk discount, can you specify what options y'all have to choose from?
3. Can y'all start a topic or is there a way to vote by the members on which bulk discount they would like to see the Co-Owners choose (to help them decide to donate)?
4. As a member, I would like to see this forum continue for quite some time. Are there ways we members could help out the Co-Owners besides donations? Sort of let us earn our keep with support.

I have written lots of software in the past and know it takes time and is a labor of love.
Could the Co-Owners host a donation program that pays something to the firmware and software developers. A sort of bonus program for keeping their work moving forward for the benefit of all of us users?

Could the Co-Owners arrange for some type of once-a-month or once-a-quarter video-conference with a user or developer, primarily for training, so we could talk with live people (rather than u-tube) with often-never-answered questions in a list below the video?

Could the Co-Owners arrange for a "super booth" at some hamfests for developers and vendors to expand the userbase, generate sales, host a training session, etc.

These represent my own opinions and no one else's. I have no affiliation with any vendor, co-owner nor software developer. It is my sincere hope that no one finds the content of this post inappropriate nor offensive. My opinions are not intended to influence any purchasing decisions by any other persion. These opinions of my own are not to be construed as any technical analysis or recommendation of this product over any other.

I plan to donate after the Co-Owner(s) reply to the questions above. I hope many others will donate as well, for the benefit of everyone in the forum.

All,

The annual payment of $220 for this group is due on January 18th. Last
year, the co-owners split the fee in half and paid it. This year we are
asking for donations from one or more group members.

I can think of two ways for group members to donate.

1. Send donations directly to one of the co-owners (probably me) and
when sufficient funds have been collected the co-owner would make the
payment to groups.io.

2. Use the groups.io "Donation" facility and ask members to donate
directly.

I have some open questions about the groups.io donation feature and have
asked them. Also, there are aspects of the Donation facility which I do
not like, from privacy and financial account security standpoints.

With respect to the first method listed above, I would be willing to
collect donations paid directly to me using PayPal "Friends and Family"
up to the $220 and make the payment directly to groups.io. Apart from
collecting donations from members, this is what I did last year. If for
some reason I were to receive excess funds, the excess would be returned
on a LIFO basis.

In any case, we, collectively as a group, will need to come up with the
$220. At present, if there are any members who would like to pledge a
donation, please send an email to the group owners with the amount that
you are willing to pledge. This would allow me to do a bit of planning
numbers-wise. As I do not want to lower the S/N ratio of the technical
content of the posts, please send any pledges to the owners at
[email protected].

Happy New Year, and thank you from the group owners.
