I guess there are a few on the list with access to Agilent or other high-end VNAs.

It would be nice to see a side-by-side comparison made between the H4 and the high-end, and a pdf

or YouTube video made with the results.

I see Gabriel's assertion that fundamentals should be the way to move forward, even it that means some

extra expense.

I have a good spectrum analyzer, but that is no vna ;-)

Open it and check if there is a battery installed - there may not be. I doubt the piece of film has anything to do with a battery as the 450ma battery is connected via a header.

If you are looking to purchase a NanoVNA-H then you should narrow your decision down to either the 2.8" NanoVNA-H v3.4 or 4" NanoVNA-H4. Both of these devices are the latest releases from hugen and have improved performance across the 10k-1.5GHz range.

The device at the Amazon link is an 2.8" NanoVNA-H v3.3 which does not have the performance upgrades. The giveaway that is v3.3 and not v3.4 is the battery. The v3.4 now includes a 650mAH battery.

My personal recommendation would be the 4" NanoVNA-H4. It sports a faster processor, double the flash memory and a larger display that your eyes will thank you for. You will be also be future proofing yourself as it has greater potential for additional firmware enhancements.

I haven't checked whether either device is available on Amazon. My purchases were through hugen's Alibaba store. Chinese new year has pretty much stopped all current Asian shipments.

Advice please on battery charging

Just bought a NanoVNA. Powers up fine from the USB port on switch on and charging led flashes and ON led illuminates. After charging unit wont power up with USB lead disconnected as if battery not charged. I notice a bit of film sticking out on top left hand corner of unit. Sort of thing you would pull on to bring a battery into circuit but this is quite firmly affixed to the unit. Anyone know of its purpose and can any help on why battery not charging.

Maybe better thinking of making the vna more robust with a bigger screen and a jog switch that doesent self destruct,needs better connectors and a metal case imho.

G'day all,
J-B Weld is my friend... with all the mini/micro/pico USB/HDMI/younameit sockets under my jurisdiction, I stick the bloody things down with tiny amounts of "the Glue from God", no exceptions...
on my nV-H, two small beads of J-B on the sides (of USB-C socket), watch out for the LED, and one slightly thicker bead on the front of the socket where it sticks 2mm proud of the PCB's top edge.

The design changes to the NanoVNA-H v3.4 and NanoVNA-H4 have truly extended the useable measurement range to 1.5 GHz. I haven't performed t-check linearity measurements as erik has, but my own measurements of known components have borne out hugen's specifications. I come from a test and measurement background and have evaluated quite a few of the "garbage gear" from China. hugen's latest devices tend more towards the class of the DG8SAQ VNWA and miniVNA analyzers.

Any piece of measurement gear is just a tool. It is up to the user to learn the merits and limits of the tool. If a tool is used incorrectly or pushed beyond its specifications the results will be poor. During my career I have seen technicians that could never develop the discipline required to use a vector network analyzer. They were sloppy and could not grasp the importance of a proper calibration, properly correct test fixturing, how to best make use of the available measurement points, etc. Developing this discipline is just as important with the NanoVNA or you will end up with garbage in garbage out test results.

I have been following your V2 hardware and software designs on GitHub. Both efforts seem to coming along nicely and I look forward seeing the finished product. One of the great things about the NanoVNA is its performance, even from clone manufacturers who know only how to copy and stuff a PCB. To me that is the best testament of the soundness of its design than any other matrix.

Can anyone tell me if the font is any bigger on the 4" over the 2.8"? I know the screen is bigger, but is the font bigger, or is it the same?

And yes, I know there is another firmware vers with bigger fonts.... but I'd like to keep the current firmware if I get it.

I went for the NanoVNA-F which does have bigger fonts - see the attached.

If/when I get the 3 GHz version, I would want the similar display quality as the NanoVNA-F, and preferably something which displayed more than 101 sample points. Having said that, I would likely be using a PC most of the time.

As you have many switches anyway you may consider a switchable high pass filter to get rid of the fundamental and thus being able to use the 3rd harmonic. Not sure if your mixer can handle up to 9GHz and the bridge will probably stop working much earlier, but it would be a nice experiment.

I just looked at that phone you linked,couple of points,firstly they dont ship to the uk and secondly its on android 6 so no good for the nanovna app!!,hat a shame,does anyone know the part number/details of the 4 inch screen hugen is using?,ive fitted a 3.2 inch one to mine but 4 would be better,cheers in advance.73.

In his tweeter feed edy555 noted that the power output of the NanoVNA-H v3.4 has been increased to 0 dBm.

Via Microsoft Translate:

" Recently Hugen's hardware has a high output level and room for DR, and it barely looks up to about 2.3G, so the frequency range is secretly enlarged (up to 2.7GHz). "

Translation was not very good but basically says that with the NanoVNA-H v3.4 higher level output, measurements are barely useable to 2.3G with increased noise level. So edy555, in his Jan 18 2020 0.6.0 firmware release, secretly enlarged the top end frequency to 2.7 GHz.

As erik noted, the range above 1.5 GHz is not supported and you are on your own up there. Expect plenty of noise and just maybe a few useful measurements.

It should be noted that the comparison was done with a NanoVNA-H using the -AA firmware which uses a font size that is about the same as the NanoVNA-H4, but has to be squeezed into much less real estate.

David I think you under estimate how easy or cheaply it can be done. The DG8SAQ VNWA and miniVNA low cost vna's have been around for quite a while and neither has managed a portable self-contained design like the NanoVNA.

Hugen did extensive research after he bowed to user demand for a larger display. He was limited to displays which have an SPI interface and the 4" display he settled on is currently the only one that was available.

The NanoVNA-F uses a parallel interface, so its designer had a wider number of displays to choose from but still settled for the 4.3" screen.

The NanoVNA has sold thousands of units since its introduction so "barely useable" might be a bit harsh. I will admit that since purchasing the 4" NanoVNA-H4, my 2.8"' NanoVNA has been relegated to desktop use with NanoVNA-saver.

The ICOM IC-7300 has a 4 inch touchscreen display had has been a big success so I think lots of hams and experimenters will find it sufficient. Have you looked at the Android app?

Bird uses a 5.5" Samsung cellphone for the display and compute base of their SK4000 antenna analyzer series so it is possible.?I mentioned the SK4000 way back last September.

When you think about it, cho45's android app for the 'nano sort of replicates that in a crude way.?
