Re: Firmware updates.

Larry,

Have you compared the DisLord and Hugen firmware version 1.0.45 on a -H4? Apparently the Hugen version uses larger font sizes but I don't know if that is the case on the -H4.

I am currently using the DisLord version on a -H4 and it works great but if the fonts are easier to read with these old eyes i will upgrade.

Roger

That's a great idea to mark it... I have a few telescopic antenna's I use on scanners, and always just guesstimate.

Why didn't you just search for the Rohde & Swartz group.....

Re: Firmware updates.

That's not the way to think about it, Charlie!
If Michael wants to use some of the newer PC applications, he will need to upgrade the firmware or things may not work properly.
Yes, he can stay with the older apps, but OneofEleven's Nano-App.exe needs at least 1.0 or greater firmware.
Michael - it's actually very easy to flash - just follow the guides.? Grab the newbie guide.

You cannot 'brick' the device - I proved this to another user when I pulled the USB cable in the middle of an update. All I did was to short the BOOT-0 pins to place the unit into DFU mode again and re-flashed the device. The only caveat is to make sure you use H FW on an H device, H4 FW on an H4 device and F FM on an F device.
You have an H device so download the 1.0.45 zip file from the forum files area, unzip and flash the H version to your device.
I compile and flash my own changes - once you've dome it a couple of times - you got it!

Hi,

the sad litany of people having trouble with updates I'm put off
performing any updates for the time being.

As I say I'm perfectly happy with it at present, NanoVNA-Saver works
fine and is a great asset so don't have any great desire to update. it
just seems a pity that it seems to cause so many people problems.

Re: Sun Shield?

Unlike a cellphone, these little devices don't need photographic-quality displays, too bad frontlit LCDs are not cheaper and better than they are.

Re: Sun Shield?

The barn doors available on some photography LED light's casing, repurposed as a sunshade, may be an option for some. If not available separately, it's obviously really only an option if you can find one cheap/non-functioning.

Re: Sun Shield?

Googling for "drone display sunshade" finds all kinds of things that could be pressed in to use with the NanoVNA.

The same search on eBay finds a plethora of likely options.

Interesting.

In my current packaging of portable stuff I have my KX2 transceiver wrapped in a cloth to give it a little bit more protection. That cloth might be (or maybe could be) big enough and dark enough to help shield the sun.

Thanks for the idea,

Re: Nanovna white screen USB dead #firmware #nanovna-h4

Hi David,

BTW, is there any DFU tool on linux?
You may want to check the repositories for your particular Linux distribution to see if they include a package for one of the DFU tools. When I searched for DFU on SuSE Linux (with some optional repositories enabled), I found 3 of them: dfuutil, dfu-util and dfutool.
I had no problems detecting the NanoVNA but did ran into a problem when I tried to flash the new firmware.
The NanoVNA has a different Device Id when it is in DFU mode then when it is in normal operation. The firmware file contains the Device Id for the NanoVNA in normal operation, but the NanoVNA must be in DFU mode for the firmware upgrade.
The DFU utility was comparing whether the Device Id in the specified firmware file was compatible with the Device Id on the command line and refused to upgrade because of a detected mismatch.
If the NanoVNA is the only DFU capable device connected to your computer then the easiest way to avoid the problem is to not specify any Device Id at all. Unfortunately I was not so lucky and on top of it, the offending DFU capable device with built-in and not easily removed.
The fix for me was to provide a partial (wildcard) Device Id. The Device Id consists of two values, the Vendor Id and the Product Id. Since the Vendor Id portion is the same when in DFU mode or normal mode, I specified only the Vendor Id on the command line.

As can be seen from the examples for NanoVNA firmware upgrades on Linux, this problem with the Device Id check does not apply to all versions of the DFU utilities/tools.

Re: Waterproof storage case for NanoVNA for Canadian users

Tom N8ZI

America has similar cases like the Plano? 3640-10 Waterproof StowAway Utility Box. These are made for fishing tackle, come in various sizes, customizable dividers, silicone o-ring for a waterproof seal. They can be purchased online or at sporting goods retailers for $5-$15 depending on size. Even Harbor Freight sells their version.

Waterproof storage case for NanoVNA for Canadian users

Folks,

Princess Auto in Canada has a surplus deal this month of a plastic waterproof storage case that looks ideal for storing the nanoVNA.

The price is $8 CAD. 7-1/4 x 4-1/4 x 1 in. Water-Resistant Storage Box

Re: Bad Cable

Good idea.? The Smith chart will indicate if it is a short or open, whereas the sweep will just tell you something is wrong.

Re: Sun Shield?

I also had the same problem ... when I am outside I solved it in a little bit strange and somewhat complicated way, using the NanoVNA as if it were a photo plate camera of other times.
When I do the measurements outside I fix the NanoVNA to a photo tripod and than I cover my head and the NanoVNA with a dark cloth.

There are a multitude of forum messages that detail how to flash the DFU file in Linux.
It's also mentioned in the various user guides in the forum files area.
A quick search of messages using search terms: DFU and LINUX finds:
