Re: Assorted NanoVNA-H4 observations

How is this done in Linux? I have the chart with all the commands, but how do I get in there to begin with?

Thanks,

Jason

Glad it worked, Steve. Now all we have to do is figure the thing out! It looks really useful. Good thing there's an Idiot's Guide to the NanoVNA in the files section. Should be something written with me in mind.

Hope everyone's 2021 is MUCH better than 2020 was.

Re: Nanovna and Amazon Fire 10 tablet

You're welcome. I use a Fire 7 tablet with my VNA.

Re: Issue with NanoVNA-App s1p and s2p files #applications #problem #fix

Thank you DiSlord for your answer.

You are right. If I change this locale setting in Win7/10, it works correctly now. I don't know why the other applications such as Saver, Partner or Sharp are not sensitive to this setting, but the main thing is that it works ! I have also discovered that the decimal separator used by NanoVNA-App is depicted on the left lower part of the main window.

I have also transposed this to the Wine/Ubuntu environment through Winetricks and the registry editor (regedit) :
Path : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\International
Entry : sDecimal and change "," by "."

Once again thank you for your help, and congratulations also to OneOfEleven for this master piece of software.

Re: Assorted NanoVNA-H4 observations

NanoSaver does not change what you see on the display when it's running. That is why you don't see the freq steps change to 401.?
The device calibration can only be done on the device, for the device. NanoSaver will not calibrate the device itself, it will only do a calibration for NanoSaver. In other words, NanoSaver will not update anything on the device itself.?
Be careful with how you flash the device as the naming of the procedures is confusing to some. That is why I edited the DeFuSe Gui to show better understood words. Have a look in the files section for my updated DeFuSe Gui file. I assume you verify through the version menu that your FW upgrade
We successful.?
Finally, calibration of the device is up to you. You have a limited number of discrete freq steps so it is always a good idea to ensure you maximize the accuracy of those steps for any range you use as anything between each pair of calibrated points is approximated.?
Again, I ask you to learn how to use the search tool for the forum messages as ALL of this has been discussed previously.?
Stay safe and be well!

I found that simply re-flashing firmware was not enough to reset the device...at least not re-flashing the same firmware version that had previously been installed. Doing this resulted in no change to my messed up settings.? I needed to flash an earlier version of firmware, then flash again with the target version, before the unit appeared to go back to the original state. So, if you are hoping for a complete reset, keep this in mind.
2.? I was trying out the NanoVNA Saver 0.3.8 software, and for some reason the software was resetting the NanoVNA back to 101 sweep points (DisLord's firmware allows up to 401 sweep points). The NanoVNA Saver software would state that 401 Sweep points were being used, but the display on the Nano would say 101. I couldn't figure out how to fix this, and this was the main reason I decided to reset the firmware. Perhaps this was just due to some messed-up configuration I had incurred.
3. Question:? Does the calibration offered in the NanoVNA Saver software do exactly the same thing as running the calibration from the NanoVNA itself? I've read conflicting info about this-- some sources say the calibration is the same, others say it is better to calibrate directly on the NanoVNA.
4. Related question: Is it necessary to re-calibrate for each band and save those calibration settings to a separate memory slot (Slot0, Slot1, etc.?? Again, I read different things -- I thought it WAS necessary to recalibrate for each band, but in the NanoVNA Saver software documents it says "A calibration of both ports across the entire frequency span, saved to slot 0, is sufficient." S I am now unsure about this. If I want to measure SWR and impedance for a variety of antennas in the HF 80m to 6m range, would one calibration from 80m-6m be sufficient (saved to one slot), or should I calibrate each band separately into the 5 available slots (such as 80M->Slot0, 40m->Slot1, 20m->Slot2, 10m->Slot3, 6m->Slot4)?

It's actually pretty fun to figure this little device out.

First thing, before you do anything else, is to refer to the "Upgrade NanoVNA use DFU" at .

The .rar file is a compressed file, similar to a ZIP file. In it there are files for the NanoVNA-H and NanoVNA-H4.

When I followed the directions on that page, everything went great and I successfully upgraded my Firmware.

Good luck.

w2aew has a useful Nanovna set of videos - see

Re: Assorted NanoVNA-H4 observations

1 To clear settings completely do it via CLI with clearconfig 1234 command ( command line interface). If you look in the files section on page 2 there is a doc that lists all the CLI commands. It's recommended you do that after loading new firmware as old settings may not be fully compatible and may give odd results like you are seeing. Clearconfig will remove all old settings including screen calibration so you will have to do that again too. I use a free program called PuTTy, works well with Windows 10. Just set COM to whatever comm port your Nanovna is connected on and click open. It will pop up a command screen where you can read and enter data.
2 With DisLord firmware set sweep point via menu.
3 Personally I set calibration on VNA itself - not via a third party application.
4 Calibration will simply give you the selected number of data points across the selected frequency range. Obviously 401 points over say a 10Mhz range you are interested in will give a more accurate reading than 401 points over a 900Mhz range ?

Re: Assorted NanoVNA-H4 observations

For TDR measurements, it is recommended to set a wide frequency range, e.g. 1MHz-900MHz.
Surely you ask a lot of things at the same time, so I recommend the group wiki and files folder, where you will get the answers to the most important questions in the forum. Besides, I recommend my website, I¡¯m trying to create a similar collection. A simple question with a simple answer.
I wish you a useful stay.

Re: Assorted NanoVNA-H4 observations

One other note: In the NanoVNASaver software, I am getting very strange TDR values for cable length. I've entered the correct cable Velocity Factor, but it seems like each time I restart the software a new value is shown (attached to the same antenna, of course). Has anyone else seen this?
