Re: New H4 Model Received from R & L Electronics
Hello again all; Thanks for the info on saving image files from NanoVNA Saver.
I'm not sure I'm ready to go inside for the SD card mod yet, but in trying to understand it. It looks like the connections for the SD card holder are already on the H4 PCB, which would be easy to add, but I do not understand about the crystal?? Do you have to replace the clock crystal on the PCB or what?? 73, John, K9KA |

Re: Possible adjunct to 2.8" NanoVNA for outdoor use - LCD viewfinder
Thank you, Oristo and DJ7BA ---
I discovered the small metal shim or bezel at the bottom of the viewfinder shipping box this morning before I read your posting (did not realize that the shim was included, or that the viewfinder used magnetic mounting). The shim or bezel has four thin adhesive areas used to attach the shim to the camera body. I slightly trimmed the shim at one corner (it had slightly enlarged outline, perhaps to help camera owner to position the shim, but in this case the enlarged outline interferes with one of the four nanovna screws), then pressed the shim onto the front of the nanovna. The shim does not adhere very well to the front of the nanovna; perhaps because of the material or paint used on the front layer of the nanovna package, or I impaired the shim flatness after trimming the corner, so after I attached then removed the viewfinder (the magnetic attraction between the viewfinder and the shim is quite strong and magnetic attachment would be a good solution to problem #3), the shim separated from the nanovna and remained attached to the viewfinder magnets. The presence of the shim (it is ~1mm thickness, adding to the distance between the LCD display and the viewfinder lens) did not seem to change the image focus enough to notice - it was still slightly out of focus (with chromatic aberation), but perfectly usable. I would be happy to use it. Considering the intended fit of the viewfinder and the very good fit otherwise to the nanovna, perhaps the nanovna 2.8" display was originally used in digital camera manufacture... I think a more useful solution would be a replacement nanovna 2.8" front panel made from thin steel rather than FR4, but with same opening and same mounting holes. This would allow the viewfinder to directly attach to the nanovna front using the in-built magnets. It is probably required to use commercial manufacturing to make a steel front panel, so I do not think I will be able to proceed further, but I will investigate improved attachment of the viewfinder for my nanovna. DJ7BA - I did find other listings of this type of item on ebay, some lower price maybe USD 6 with (slow) shipping. There seems to be some variations depending on camera type. My device was labeled on box as type "V1", type AY014, for Canon 5DII/7D/500D and Nikon D700/D800". I have no such cameras, so I did not consider the possible differences. Thank you again, Dave |

I've been considering using a basis pursuit to determine the parameters. Not done anything more than look closely at the math. It's an underdetermined problem, but basis pursuit can handle that very well using GLPK if one has an accurate dictionary of simulations for the ranges of values spanning the true values.
I was getting less than 1% errors inverting the heat equation for fluid flow in porous media to determine layer thicknesses above and below a horizontal crack. In that case the flow is the sum of two flows, both of which are infinite series of exponentials. I just ordered an H4, so when that arrives I'll have a good excuse for playing with the Octave solution. Have Fun! Reg |
Re: New H4 Model Received from R & L Electronics
Thanks for posting about this. I'd not been aware the H4 had come to market. I just bought one from R&L whom I'd never heard of before. I already have the cheap 2.8" black clone, but the H4 is too nice not to have one. Though it could be said I have a ridiculous number of VNAs now, VNWA, xaVNA, 8753B and 8510C in addition to soon two nanoVNAs.
Have Fun! Reg |

If you install SD card slot in H4 (and use new firmware, it still beta, but stable) possible save screenshots and Touchstone files on SD, and after open it on PC

I went searching for possible solutions and ran into a low-cost camera viewfinder accessory (some digital cameras also have ~2.8" LCD display, and are subject to the same visibility impairments when used outdoors.) A few weeks ago I ordered on ebay the 2.8" LCD viewfinder listed below (now about USD 12; they seem common on ebay and I'm sure there are alternatives to consider...) It arrived after about a month, and after popping out (inverting) the rubber material eye cup (it's shipped in a backwards configuration reduce size of shipping container) and placing it on my (very much original-era NanoVNA), it does indeed somewhat magnify the display and shield it from ambient light. A few of caveats: 1. The touchscreen is obviously not accessible while the viewfinder is in place, and my nanovna is pure original vintage, no updates, so the manual button/switch controls leave more than a little to be desired; 2. The focus isn't quite perfect - it seems that it the small gap between the LCD plane and the viewfinder focus point caused by the PC board material takes the viewfinder slightly out of focus, but it's still quite readable, nonetheless; 3. There's no immediately obvious way to fix the viewfinder to the NanoVNA. In any event, I wanted to pass this along to our user hhcommunity to see if it inspires any further ideas. A few photos are attached. Please excuse the up/down inverted photos (photography hasn't been my thing since about 1962!) Hi Dave,
no, not really. What I meant saying: I never needed to recalibrate the AA-600 between ham bands. That's(And that is exactly on the topic (NanoVNA and Antennascope software working well together:) The RigExpert is calibrated at it's N connector plane, once and (almost) forever but nowhere else. That is the only cal plane I need. Calibration with a huge number of cal points (I don't know the exact number at present, though) covers the full 600 MHz range at close enough spacing. So no recal is needed, except for aging reasons, perhaps. A practical example: I measured my antenna (i.e. a narrow banded W3DZZ on 80m) at the rig side coax cable end in the shack. The RigExpert Antennascope (1.0 and 2.0) software permits saving that in an .s1p file that I can use in SimSmith, that allowed me to obtain the exact feedpoint .s1p (sweep impedance) data file. No need to: 1. leave the shack for terminating the coax at the (hard to reach) antenna feedpoint, 2. go back to the shack and calibrate the RigExpert for that (one-antenna-unique) cable length feedpoint plane, 3. go back to the feedpoint and reconnect the antenna, 4. go back to the shack to obtain the feedpoint impedance sweep data. Instead, with that easily measured and calculated feedpoint sweep impedance file I could cut my cable length and use an LC tuner such that I now have much better than before, and now also flat, SWR across 3.5 ... 3.8 MHz without retuning. A big improvement. This could also have been done with the NanoVNA - but for o n e b a n d o n l y because of the small number of 101 only cal points. After recal for any next band, the same procedure would have been needed again with the NanoVNA. Instead: On the AA-600, all calibration is (almost) once only: 1. for all frequencies 1 ... 600 MHz 2. at the RigExpert's N connector plane. No other plane is needed. That is why that calibration can stay for all my needs on all (in my case below 30 MHz) bands. There is no need to recalibrate the RigExpert - except for aging reasons. The manufacturer's cal can stay in many practical ham cases for all uses. Probably to start with, that is better that what many can calibrate. Needless to say, that in my (below 30 MHz) case the N socket's precision is not of major concern. It's ruggedness, however, is. Neither my MFJ-259 nor my NanoVNA has such rugged, long lasting connection. This is why I love my AA-600 most of my three analyzers. 73, Hans DJ7BA -----Urspr¨¹ngliche Nachricht----- Von: [email protected] <[email protected]> Im Auftrag von Dr. David Kirkby, Kirkby Microwave Ltd Gesendet: Freitag, 12. You can not avoid the need to calibrate virtually any VNA (RigExpert, NanoVNA, Keysight etc) if you wish to measure the actual complex impedance of an antenna because the impedance is changed dramatically by the connecting cable. Re: Possible adjunct to 2.8" NanoVNA for outdoor use - LCD viewfinder
With respect to the viewer focus. Have you tried it on any other display like a smart phone, TV or computer display; from what looks like a very cheap lens, it might be what you see is what you get. If other displays look more in focus, then you could try sanding down the viewer a bit to account for the extra space caused by the case.
Another possible solution might be to use it with a smart phone where the display can be set brighter and would probably be bigger as well. I am new here, but tried "NanoVNA WebApp" on my Samsung Android today, not sure if there are others or if there is one for iPhones. |
