Hi Hugen,
Existing plastic boxes should be rework. I think the best solution would be to increase the bolts' towers by 0.5mm, which can be glued with 4 plastic washers. But any other distance can be a solution. For example, a single-sided film glued to pcb, which raises 0.5 mm. When I worked at QAM, we ensured the quality of the incoming and outgoing products. There was also an opportunity to solve the problem. So life doesn't stop, we just see the world differently. Good health to all. 73, Gyula HA3HZ |
Sorry again for the trouble caused by our mistake, I have pasted the pillars for the NanoVNA-H4 currently on sale to temporarily solve this problem. I also received the improved shell, and I am a little bit dissatisfied. I will improve it further and use a revised version in April. If you have received a structural problem with the NanoVNA-H4 before, please contact me, and I will provide a revised shell for free. Sorry again!

Looks like the sampling rate limit of the signal path is the USB 2.0, so wondering about that hack too. Looks like the AD9361 datasheet grid array ( ) is different... plus might not be many options for other chips using a CSP BGA adapter sockets if thinking using a different chip. Checked and even on Aliexpress the socket adapters are half as much as the Pluto. First time for me looking at BGA socket adapters, interesting. |
Roger,
If you are that unhappy with your purchase, contact me by email and I will buy your H4 from you. You should probably consider buying a commercial vendor VNA that has the support, fit, and finish that you expect. Hugen's VNA offers terrific performance at a very low price but it is designed for people that expect to tinker rather than a plug-and-play product. Cheers, Bill |

I wasn't going to respond further, but I must. So, forgive me if I step on
anyone's toes. Most of the buyers of the NANOVNA products have absolutely no idea what the creators of these instruments have offered the RF community! They are so far beyond the average "antenna analyzer" there is absolutely no comparison at 10X the price, may even 30X!! I could name three offerings from other suppliers that are priced between $ 350 and $ 1500 that don't even approach the performance and capabilities of the NANOVNA offerings. I am fortunate to have once worked for HP. At the time, HP encouraged dumpster dipping. It was Bill and Dave's philosophy that if something turned up in the large dumpsters and you had a good use for it, take it home and its yours. That was the old HP (BC = before Carley, bless her little crooked selfish self-centered heart!!). I am fortunate enough to have acquired an HP 8753C with the associated S-Parameter test set - a VNA (much like the NANOVNA products) that covers 300 kHz through 3 GHz with guaranteed 100 dB dynamic range. In its day, that combination went for something over $60,000. Maybe more as I no longer have my collection of HP catalogs (we shouldn't mention the Nealy Sales "experiment"). The creators of the NANOVNA products have reduced HP (R&S, TEK, ....) prices to something around $100 that most of us can afford! After all, name a radio we might buy, if your a ham, that costs $100? The last radio I bought, likely my last, cost a bit over $3000. That was for the Icom 7610 and the 7300 is about $1K. These new instruments offer much of the capability that the HP 8753C offerings. Sure, the noise floor doesn't guarantee 100 dB, but, then, it isn't an HP piece of gear. 40 (at 1.5 GHz) to 80 (at LF and HF and low VHG) dB of dynamic range (I refer to a typical reflection measurement or out-of-band filter measurement) from 100 kHz (some lower than that) through 1.5 GHz is a dream to me for all of $100 and is more than the typical amateur can utilize!! And....... I can use them at the antenna feed point. They even cover our newest amateur band - 2200-Meters - which my 8753C does not. So.......quit the belly aching and learn to use the instrument. These online groups are here to help you learn, not belly ach. And, once again, thank you guys and gals in China who created these instruments for a job well done and appreciated!!!! Wish I could give all of you a big hug. You've done all of us RF types a *major* favor!!!!! So, quit the belly aching and learn to use the devices. Sincerely learning how to fully utilize a vector network analyzer will teach you so much more about our hobby of all things RF than any undergraduate text book on the subject possibly could. Maybe you should start looking at Keysight or Rohde and Schwarz network analyzers.? They start at about 250 times the price of the NanoVNA and up - WAY up. ???? I consider the NanoVNA to be a bargain.? It's not the equivalent of a Keysight or a Rohde and Schwarz, but then it's only 50 bucks.? And the NanoVNA design is open source, you could start manufacturing them yourself with better build quality. |

What's the matter, Roger? Still don't know which end of a screwdriver to hold? The required "fix" is well off the lower end of the scale for the degree of difficulty involved, but all you can do is whinge because a little too much tightness was applied to the case screws. If the solution is too difficult for you to carry out, then send your H4 to me and I'll do it for you FOC.
You expect to get a free replacement case for your "defective" H4? You do realise that that would involve your having to completely remove the case screws, thereby going well past the requirements for the simple fix? Are you sure you're sufficiently technically qualified to carry out such an operation? Read again what Herb posted and absorb the message! Regards, Dave |
Remember, this is an open sourced product. No warranty and guarantee,
explicit or implicit. They do their best in China, but it is somewhat expected that there may be user 'adjustments' required. Same for now firmware downloads and installs. I have the original small display, the -F and the -H4 versions. No problems with any of the three. So, loosen the screws a bit - pretty simple and it doesn't even expose the electronics. Can you imagine a torque wrench on every line on which these NANOVNA's are assembled? not.......... Why should customers have to start fixing a new product that they purchased? Any reputable suppler stands behind their product. =========================================================================== Roger, You have to take into consideration that hugen is a talented radio amateur enthusiast whose aim was to put a sub $100 VNA into hands of other radio amateurs. He learns from users and his own experience, but in the end the NanoVNA is a open source hobbyist device and hugen is only financially capable of offering the level of customer support attendant to a sub $100 product produced by an enthusiast. Technically the H-4 works as designed. The case design was probably farmed out and the tolerances are tighter than they should be on a number of units. I would advise any potential customer of a new product (NanoVNA-H4, SAA-2, etc.) who has an expectation of receiving a product free of any warts not to be among the first version purchasers. Experienced amateur radio enthusiast don't mind being on the cutting edge and helping to improve and advance a project. Hugen, from past experience, has continued to provide technical support of the NanoVNA and I don't doubt that subsequent deliveries of the NanoVNA-H4 will address the packaging problems. Fortunately, all my recommendations have been to other radio amateurs who don't mind and even relish popping open the case and making the minor changes required. Again, it all depends on ones level of expectation. The NanoVNA-H4 meets my expectation for a hobbyist level sub-$100 unit. I received my 4" 1500 MHz H4 version 0.4.5-7-g57d62f2 a few days ago, ordered thru Alibaba on Feb 7. Battery was fully charged and all is working fine. Nicely boxed and it includes a short carry strap which has a triangular plastic piece that can be used for menu selecting. Glad to see the on-screen battery level meter - no need to install a diode. It's communicating with NanoSaver and calibration works. Have not made any measurements yet using NanoSaver but SWR, Smith chart and R+jX measurements and calibration direct on the H4 are working. So far I'm very pleased.

Appears to be just existing nanoVNA with the addition of a balanced to unbalanced balun on the bridge Rx sens output. . Not to be confused with the high freq AD8343 mixers, ADF4350 synth version previously described as V2 model.
Naming is going to create confusion with various models. |
Everyone-
Update- Maggie K replied overnight. They are sending a new case. I do read this blog every day and somehow missed any report of these issues. ( pause for 1st sip of coffee) Versus my 1st smaller NanoVNA, I was surprized that this came in a case... It must be saddening to find an improvement such as a case as nice as it looks now is a problem. I still am concerned regarding the Multi-switch as with regard to my "old" (3 month) NanoVNA the multi-switch on it is better but not perfect. Inspection of the new multi-switch indicates it's kind of soldered on - surface mount style and would be difficult to remove and replace. I am not warm and fuzzy in that regard. I will post my adventures in the future and enjoy all the support I have received. |
