Yes, there are several versions of the NanoVNA firmware. I have found that the June 12 version is the best. It fixes the problem of communication/interpolation while recalling Cal settings. Not sure how you would find commands from the binaries.

My application is running now on PC Win XP laptop. So far, I am impressed with the little NanoVNA. I have two versions, the black version (gen111.taobao.com) and the white clone (Gecko) model. Picked up the Gecko at auction for US$28. I wanted to compare the two models.

They are very similar but Taobao model seems a bit better. It has stronger type C USB connector vs micro on Gecko. Boot pads on PCB are much bigger on Taobao model. On/off switch is nicer on Taobao, with nicer feel that Gecko. Battery is larger on Taobao and the PCB looks better too, more finished. But both units seem to work. Calibration kit accessories are better on Taobao and you get a set of sma cables, thru connector and USB cable too, things not included with Gecko.

But if you have big hands/fingers you might find the units too tiny to use comfortably.

I have transferred June 12 firmware to Taobao VNA and it works well. Will do same with Gecko soon.

In next few days (or so) will be using my app to compare the impedance measuring accuracy of NanoVNA to my trusty AIM4160 impedance analyzer, which goes to 180 MHz.. As I said, this tiny little unit is amazing so far. It has already proved its worth in measuring crystals and plotting transfer functions of filters.

When measuring things like SWR for antennas in the field the handheld NanoVNA works well. Several of my antennas were found to be spot on compared to my other analyzers. But in my home lab, I like to use PC app (like NanoVNA Sharp or my own app) with the NanoVNA to measure components like coils, crystals, filters and so on.

I just ordered the black unit with cables and battery and you're right, the Gecko unit is slightly inferior.
Have you found the source code repository for the June 12 versions of F/W? All I have are DFU files dated June 11.
You were lucky with the auction - several vendors have reserve bids that are almost the same as the normal selling price.

The dates are slightly different when firmware is installed. I used the firmware dated June 11 (20190611). But when I checked the firmware info inside the NanoVNA it said June 12, so that is what I quoted to you. So we probably have used the same software. Sorry for the confusion.

Most of the NanoVNAs being sold have the older F/W. So there is the question, that many users face, of upgrading the F/W .

I looked at?Aliexpress but saw no one offering a battery. All of the descriptions seemed to be actually the same. Since there seem to be variations among those offered, it is a great help to know which have the lasted updates, before buying.?I have a bunch of excellent 18 GHz SMA male 50 ohm terminations. Each has been tested on a network analyzer. The return loss at 900 MHz will be 40 dB or greater. I can offer a very reasonable price.

He had the cheapest black unit and the photos show batteries and cables & cal adapters.
The down side is his ad says he ships in 7 days as he's waiting for stock.
So, for now, I'm playing with my Gecko.

testing for 3 years at a previous job. Now as a ham I miss having access to
my lovely Agilent 5230A ;)

I got mine from lifangduo1006_0 <>. It was $75. After looking at ll the others for less, I guess I didn't get a bad deal. It has a battery is the white Gecko. I asked about any info, and they sent me something in Chinese
I have to look at the FW, but I only have 2 traces and saw somewhere there is a load that supports 4 traces.
I wish there were markers on the NanoVNASharp. Ver. 1.02 seems to work OK, but I have to pull the USB cable then turn it on then plug the USB back , and I can connect

Thanks for the link Larry. I am going to order one. Not 100% convinced that the battery is included, but that isn't a big deal. I have several scalar network analyzers up to 26.5 GHz but no VNA. Would like to experiment with one without large cash outlay.

Here is the nanoVNA capturing a 40 meter table top loop. The pre selector is in bypass mode.
At these frequencies the response is essentially spot on with the big box. This much fun should be illegal.

That unit comes with a battery, per the written description and you can just make out the battery looking at a side view of the unit.
In any case, the black unit also has shields over the 3 mixers.
As for price, AliExpress guarantees what you're buying or they refund.

You can set the electrical delay with "DISPLAY, SCALE , ELECTRICALDELAY".
Yes, commercial calibrations are not required to be as short as possible, they can provide accurate correction data. But at a limited cost, it is easier for manufacturing to be as short and accurate as possible than to provide more accurate correction data. At the same time for HAMs with no VNA experience, it is easier to provide calibrations that no longer require additional data to be entered, although this is not precise enough, but the measurement below 1GHz is sufficient.

How EXACTLY are you determining that the return loss will be at least 40 dB
@ 900 MHz? What VNA and what calibration kit are you using? What is the
uncertainty of your measurements? Does the load have a nut that rotates
independently of the body?

I bought the NanoVNA from elecdesign2015 on ebay and got the item pretty
quickly, including battery and cables and short/open/load tests for under
$60.

The battery was charged. I'm able to talk to the device using Larry
Rothman's serial command guidelines. The unit comes with 900MHz firmware
installed.

So I'd recommend this vendor, at least for US purchasers.

There is a link in Hugen's threads that point to the new nanovnasharp version - he's writing it.
As for a battery, I used an old Motorola cellphone battery from a RAZR and attached it with 2way tape to the rear.
I guess I could have used longer standoffs and mounted it inside the rear panel - works great and it 800MAh and is 4mm thick.
You can use a battery from any larger bluetooth headset as well.
You should be able to pick these up locally really cheap.
If you want to install shields, use parts from an old cellphone.
I mounted a push button sw on the Boot pads so I can place the unit into DFU mode to push FW to it. Get that from a cellphone as well.
