Re: Android app and needed USB OTG cables and adapters (must have!)

To use MY NanoVNA with MY Samsung Orbit J3 android phone, I needed this usb otg adapter:
(Male) to USB 2.0 (Female) Adapter, On-The-Go (OTG) Convertor Cable, 3-Pack, Black $7.98 (free shipping with order over $75); ASIN B00YOX4JU6
Item model number R-1170-ADAPTER-USB-MUSB-OTG-3x

That makes it possible to connect the usb 'C' cable that came with NanoVNA to a common usb-A to a usb A-male to micro male cable. That common cable is available from Dollar Tree stores, for - - - - - one dollar! They also carry the newer usb-A male to usb-C male cables, in case you need a spare or backup cable.

The situation for my Galaxy Tab A was slightly different because the tablet has a usb-C connector, not the older Micro connector.

Re: edy555 release 0.7.1-20200321 #firmware

I don't understand why there is this concern when it comes to downloading a program from the manufacturer and maker. In exchange, you only require a simple registration. There is another solution if you use google and type the name of the program and then download it from anywhere.
Then don't complain if you have posted a virus that this program is bad. Because your program is not bad, but your PC is defective.

This firmware update is interesting as it is about the current state.
I've already seen an image that installed 0.7.1-2-g5a10105.

Am runnig in circles around the ST software page.
No DFUSE there, but lots of CONFUSION.
They are sending me a confirmation email, which immediately returns me

I have seen that 30 years ago at the start of the Inet,
but ST still has the Olde Way.

No way to get the software without goin' through a tedious

It looks like edy555 decided not to include DiSlord's averaging (bandwidth) firmware option to the 0.7.1 release. Probably decided its not ready for prime-time.

Re: ON7DQ_NanoVNA_Presentation_English

Hi Luc,

This TDR issue is quite interesting, may be beyond the initial topic, hi !

As for many of us we spend currently most of time at home, I have decided to check for TDR what is really provided by nanoVNA-saver, nanoVNAsharp softwares and stand-alone NanoVNA (see the three enclosed pictures).

For doing the test, I have considered a 2 meters coaxial cable with a velocity factor of 0,7 (PTFE), and a frequency interval between [50 kHz -900 MHz] for the measurement.

The resulting Frequency Step is (900-0.05)e06/100 = 8,9995 MHz. I have seen several times the same error where divider is 101 and not 100. In fact (n) points provide (n-1) intervals which are the samething as the frequency step. This can be easily checked in the sweep control window of nanoVNA-saver. This error is unfortunately also found in the web page

The derivated Time Step is 1/(8,9995e06) = 111 ns.

1. nanoVNAsharp use case

For nanoVNAsharp we see that this 111 ns value is used as upper delay limit for the graph. Returned delay value is about 19 ns. Path length is 19e-09*3e08*0,7 = 3,99 m. Clearly the delay value must be divided by 2 to get the real cable length (round trip situation).

2. nanoVNA-saver use case

From another interesting document written by Gunthard Kraus DG8GB (presentation v1.6, page 66), we learn that for nanoVNA-saver, the upper delay limit for the graph is set at [(Time Step)/4]. For the 111 ns Time Step value, it means the upper delay limit could be around 28 ns. If we translate this value in path length we get : 28e-09*3e08*0,7 = 5,88 m. It is quite relevant with what we see on the graph (5,80 m). It also shows that the time to the open end from the S11 values seems to be the right way for length calculation. Even if delay value is not displayed, it is clear that there is no additionnal 2 divider factor.

3. NanoVNA stand-alone

It is the same situation that for nanoVNAsharp. The returned delay value is 19 ns, and from this value the path length must be divided by 2. However the NanoVNA does automatically this calculation for getting the right length for the cable. If the user wants to build a delay line, he must pay attention to this delay value in order to do the correction. About the upper limit for the displayed delay (stop value), I have not found informations about its management. It is probably something which is cleary put in source code, but I have no skill in this field ! So if anyone could explain this point, it could be useful.

Re: Dang! I Dropped It..

Hi Robin,

The connectors on the LCD may be broken. In another forum, I saw a similar case where the wires broke because the glass was probably not glued to the pcb, so the movement caused a break in the wires.
As I know it, this LCD can be a replacement, please identify the connections before ordering.

Successful problem solving.

Thanks. David

Re: can't make a Thru calibration? #calibration

Many 50 Ohm loads are made with two 100 Ohm smd resistors in parallel. I've seen many loads fail after intensive use, all the sudden they are 100 Ohm when connected. Unconnected 50 Ohm. We solved it by using male/female adapters, so the loads will never be disconnected. By the way, there are adapter without internal thread (male side), you just push them over a female connector. We use the loads in the final product test of RFID readers.
But for calibration of a VNA, I'd use a good quality load without an adapter. Currently I use the cal kit supplied by sdr-kits, based on Rosenberger connectors. They also sell kits based on Amphenol connectors, these loads are junk and will become 100R soon. Never had a problem with the Rosenberger load. Also the load from minicircuits is excellent (ANNEQ-50X+)
