MARCH HAM TRAINING CLASSES
SCHEART will be offering Ham (Amateur) Radio classes in March of 2025. This is for Technician, General and Extra. All classes will be running from March 17th to the 21st. from 6pm to 9pm. Some classes will not take the whole week but will finish when all the material is covered. These classes run concurrently. You can only choose one of the classes. We¡¯re presenting the classes by video conference using Zoom (http://zoom.us ) If you didn¡¯t have the time to attend in person before, now is your chance. Email me at midlandsve@.... Make sure you include which class you want. I will forward your email address to your instructors. They will send you an invitation to the video conference. Here¡¯s a tutorial on how to use zoom: https://tinyurl.com/3hj2tska If you¡¯ve never used videoconferencing before, here are a few tips: Use a headset or headphones. Any headphones that plug into your computer will do. Even the wired ones that came with your cell phone, if it¡¯s using the 1/8¡± plug. This eliminates feedback when you unmute your microphone. Mute your microphone when not speaking to the instructor. Otherwise, the class will hear any background noise from your computer. Find the text/chat function and use it. New hams must start out with the Technician course. All classes are free. If you wish to attend, RSVP to MidlandsVE@.... I¡¯ll need a real name, not a handle. Be sure to tell me which class you want to take and include you cell number. Testing will be offered on March 22nd at 8:30 am at SCETV headquarters, 1041 George Rogers Blvd in Columbia. We¡¯ll take care of the administrative work first and start the testing at when the admin work is done. Bring a photo ID, an original and copy of any Ham Radio license, your FRN and $10.00 cash. If a child is testing and has no photo I.D., bring a copy of a birth certificate. Also, once the FCC processes your application, they will want an additional $35.00. If you are testing for the first time, you must bring your FCC Registration Number (FRN), which you can get here:https://tinyurl.com/yayymn28 If you¡¯re coming for testing only, email us so we can plan accordingly. Please refer any questions to midlandsve@....

Discord is a free communication app used by tens of millions of people to talk and hang out with their friends. Groups.io will continue to be the primary source for NABRC announcements etc. Our Discord server supplements groups.io and is more amenable to chat dialogs. NABRC February Meeting for Newer Hams - "Ditch the Ducky"
The next meeting of NABRC is Feb 10 at 7:00pm (fellowship 6:30pm) in the 6th floor classroom of Aiken Regional Medical Centers. New hams often start out with a simple HT with a rubber ducky antenna. They then wonder why they can't reach local repeaters. Many of us have "ditched the ducky" for better performing antennas. The topic for this month's meeting is to demonstrate alternative antennas available to improve performance. Please bring your antenna alternatives for a show & tell. -- Dave, WB5NHL Treasurer, NABRC

USPS has suspended parcels from Hong Kong and China
Be careful ordering any small items from China. For many years small items (<$800 value) came into the US via USPS "de minimis" except from taxes. Trump has suspended this exemption impacting Temu, Shein and Alliexpress. Bottomline, check where it's being shipped from you might be lucky if it's already warehoused in the US. Not sure how this will play out since USPS is unlikely able to collect import duties on the volume of small packages. https://apnews.com/article/usps-china-hongkong-shein-temu-b456d7b6d66780090bd5bef862dfda13 -- Dave, WB5NHL Treasurer, NABRC

All Electronics reincarnated
For those of us that remember the All Electronics (predating Amazon) surplus mail order business in California it looks like it has been resurrected as https://aretronics.com The major difficulty I see is the cost of shipping. They apply a flat $9.50 that makes it really difficult to compete with Amazon particularly for small parts. -- Dave, WB5NHL Treasurer, NABRC
