Schofield Technology and Radio Club N4SMS 24-25Y Summary
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýWe held the last club meeting on May 22 with 6 students and 3 pizzas. All the students are 8th graders and will be missed next year. We need to start the fall 2025 year with new 7th and 8th graders. At the peak of this year, we had 10 students. During this past year, with meetings on Thursday afternoons and the club did the following activities: Spent time learning how to solder electronic components, culminating in each student building an 18-flashing lite LED, 2 transistor, 8 resistor Christmas Tree kit that they took home. They also became familiar with de-soldering electronic components from old donated electronic equipment. Learned about Ohm¡¯s Law and its components. Learned the details on how to operate a VOM, Multimeter. Each student was given a Multimeter at the end of the training. Learned the intricacies of space dynamics, GPS operations and magnetic fields. In the spring the students acquired satellite SO-50 and via 2-way Ham Radio talked through the satellite¡¯s radio repeater to at least 3 other ground Ham stations throughout the USA. Conducted FOX hunts on school grounds trying to find a hidden small power transmitter (fox). Learned the background and history of electronics and amateur radio. Spent time learning the history of Morse Code (CW). The laying of Morse Code telegraph lines in the west by the 9th and 10th US Cavalry, Buffalo Soldiers. And their contribution to the beginning of the National Park Service. ?And the history of radio in relation to the Titanic ship Disaster. Dissected and analyzed the evolving technology of the evolution of cameras. Used electronic testing equipment to include electronic scopes, Tube Testers and Snap Circuit systems to analyze electronic circuits. One student and one parent passed the FCC Technician Class license test during the year. Leading up to the National School Club Roundup the students memorized the International Phonetic Alphabet. They also learned how to operate two-way Ham radios. Both handheld ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????portables and larger table mounted radios. ? They participated in two weeklong School Club Roundup contests during the year. One in October 2024 and one in February 2025. In October, the school station N4SMS won 1st place in the Middle School category, beating out 12 other middle schools. In February they placed 1st in Middle School category and 3rd place OVERALL. They beat 22 colleges, all the high schools, grade schools and 13 other middle schools, over 88 schools¡¯ total. To sum up the two contests that Schofield students participated in: They made over 1551 total contacts on the radio and Schofield students talked to 28 countries (listed below):
? The student with the most contacts was awarded the ¡°The Big Mouth¡± award which included items such as a soldering kit, tool kit, and Short-Wave radio. Other students were also given awards. We are looking forward to the 25-26 school year. We are planning on the first club meeting to be August 14, 2025. Elmers, now called Mentors included:??
