National Library Week 60th Anniversary
The National Library Week 2018 celebration will mark the 60th anniversary of the first event, sponsored in 1958.
To celebrate NLW, K4L, an amateur station will be on the air from the historic Aiken South Carolina Public Library on Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 10am E to 5:30pm E. The station will be on 20m SSB between 14.230-14.245Mhz. And on DSTAR Reflector 30C. The station is sponsored by the North Augusta Belvedere Radio Club.

Field Day - June 23-24, 2018
The Annual National ARRL Field Day for the North Augusta Belvedere Radio Club and the Aiken County ARES will be held on June 23 starting at 2:00 PM until June 24 at 2:00 PM. The location for Field Day is the Aiken County Government Complex located at 1930 University Parkway in Aiken, South Carolina.

Setup times will be sent out by a separate message closer to the date.
|
We will be operating 5A again and will be using multiple Flex Radios and will be operating SSB, CW, PSK-31 and much more. In 2017, we made 8,878 points and 2,336 contacts. We were 1st in South Carolina in 2017 and 6th in 5A!
|
We will have a low country boil for those who help out at Field Day.

Eagles Guitarist Joe Walsh, WB6ACU, Promotes Amateur Radio in Media Announcements
Legendary rock guitarist Joe Walsh, WB6ACU, of the Eagles is featured in a just-released set of ARRL audio and video promoting Amateur Radio. ARRL will provide the 30- and 60-second PSAs to Public Information Officers (PIOs) to share with their Section's television and radio stations. The ARRL Media and Public Relations Department also will provide these announcements files directly to interested television and radio outlets, and the announcements are available for downloading from the ARRL website for members to use in promoting Amateur Radio at club meetings and public presentations, such as on June 23-24 (PSAs specifically for ARRL Field Day also are available). Those PSAs will also be available for download from the ARRL website, so that members can present them at club meetings and other public gatherings.

Walsh, who visited ARRL Headquarters last year for taping, wanted to deliver two main messages in his PSAs: Get involved in Amateur Radio, and become a member of ARRL. The messages highlight the tremendous service that radio amateurs provide to communities, and convey how ARRL advocates on behalf of Amateur Radio on a wide range of legal and political issues.

An ARRL Life Member and longtime radio amateur, Walsh personally has been a strong supporter and advocate of ARRL and Amateur Radio, and his ham shack is just as impressive as his home recording studio. "I want to give back to the hobby that has given me so much enjoyment," he said.
|
The setting for the PSAs was W1AW, which Walsh was especially eager to revisit. The occasion also offered him an opportunity to see equipment he'd donated to W1AW years earlier. Walsh's past on-the-air forays on W1AW have always attracted enthusiastic pileups. While at W1AW, he spent some chatting with station manager Joe Carcia, NJ1Q, about the station's operations. Walsh is a well-known collector of vintage Amateur Radio equipment.

Our school clubs are always looking for Elmers to help out. Schofield Middle School in Aiken meets on Thursdays after school. North Augusta High School meets on Wednesdays after school.

The North Augusta High School ARC now has permanent antennas installed on top of the Auditorium! We will be testing them out and using them this afternoon.

Collegiate Radio Amateur Wins Radio Club of America's "Young Achiever Award"
ARRL member Ruth Willet, KM4LAO, a 19-year-old student at Michigan's , has received the Radio Club of America's "Young Achiever Award." The Young Achiever Award is presented to students of high school age or younger who have demonstrated excellence and creativity in wireless communications, and who have delivered a presentation at the annual RCA Technical Symposium. Receiving the award allowed her to attend the International Wireless Communications Expo () held in Orlando in early March.

"I was shocked to have received this award. I never dreamed I would be able to attend such a prestigious wireless event," Willet said in an for Kettering University News. "It was an honor be recognized by the Radio Club of America and to be presented with this award. It was an eye-opening experience for me to be exposed to the field of wireless communications and to be introduced to the discussions taking place among first responders and the government regarding emergency situation preparedness."

Willet, who is from Lawrenceville, Georgia, is the recipient of the ARRL Rocky Mountain Division Scholarship. At Kettering, she is pursuing a double major in mechanical engineering and engineering physics. She is president of her school's recently revived Amateur Radio club, GMTE Amateur Radio & Electronics Club, K8HPS.

"As an Amateur Radio operator, I've mostly only experienced the hobby side of radio," Willet said. "This conference allowed me to see a broad range of applications for radio and technology.... It was very energizing to attend all sorts of workshops and seminars, and learn how much our daily lives are touched by the field of wireless communications." Read .

I am told they have a good BBQ restaurant and some fast food places a few miles down the road. The instructor will be available for questions during lunch.

Bottled water will be available. Seating is limited to an expected maximum of 25 people. The class will be led by Kevan Nason, N4XL. Tom Francis, W1TEF, will assist. Both are capable presenters and have years of contest? experience having operated at sites ranging from portable Parks On The Air style to a multi-multi contest super station.

Many thanks to all who participated in the kit build last night.? ?Of the ten kits, seven were completed last night, and they ALL WORKED FIRST TIME!!!? We truly have some talented kit builders.? ?I especially want to thank all the "Elmers" who brought in tools and/or helped the kit builders.? I think it was a fun night and I'm looking for another kit for us to build.
I mentioned last night that there is an Android app that you can use on any android device,? that decodes morse code pretty well.? You can use it to check your copy from the code trainer. Here is the link:
Next meeting, Dave (WB5NHL) will give a presentation on his inexpensive setup that receives and decodes weather sat pictures.

Run United Half Marathon
We have another opportunity to provide support for our community. We have been asked to provide communications for the 2018 Run United Half Marathon. This is the sixth year for the event. The race will be held on Saturday April 28, 2018. It will start at 7:30 AM on Park Avenue at Newberry Street. The course winds around beautiful live oak trees, horse trails, training tracks, the Aiken Polo field and majestic properties.

The event is sponsored by Aiken Electric Cooperative. They have a reputation for taking good care of the volunteers supporting the event. In previous years they have served breakfast for the volunteers at 6:30 AM on Saturday. They also provided a T shirt that identifies the wearer as ¡°Event Staff¡±. A bag with useful items has also been provided.

Ham Radio "a Special Hobby," Young ARRL Member Tells College Publication
A rising star in the Amateur Radio world -- 19-year-old Ruth Willet, KM4LAO, of Lawrenceville, Georgia -- has caught the eye of her school, Kettering University in Michigan, where she is majoring in mechanical engineering and engineering physics. Willet already has attracted attention through her ham radio activities. Last spring, she was the keynote speaker at the 32nd annual DX Dinner? held in conjunction with Hamvention?, where her topic was "Experiencing the Hobby of a Lifetime." The previous summer, she was a member of the 2016 Dave Kalter Memorial Youth DX Adventure (), which operated from the island of Saba that year. Last year, she won a QST Cover Plaque Award for the article she wrote about her YDXA experience. At the 30th Hamvention Youth Forum in 2017, Willet spoke on "Plugging into Your Valuable Club Resources." She is the recipient of the ARRL Rocky Mountain Division Scholarship.

Kettering University News took notice of Willet in a , "Kettering University Student Brings Ham Radio Hobby, Expertise to Campus," by Sarah Schuch. The article explains how an early fascination with Morse code led Willet into ham radio and inspired her to obtain her license in 2015. She now holds an Amateur Extra-class license.

"I would encourage people to consider exploring Amateur Radio, because it's a hobby that allows you to explore anything from technical electronics to international friendships," Willet is quoted as saying in the article. "It's such a special hobby because there's so many people that want to get to know you and want to help you learn and grow. It really has enabled me to mature into who I am today."

Set to graduate in 2021, Willet said her ham radio experiences have taught her a lot, some of which she is able to apply to her studies, and vice versa. She hopes to start an Amateur Radio club on campus this spring to get more students interested. In the article, Willet also pointed to Amateur Radio's public service role, citing the devastating 2017 hurricanes, where ham radio sometimes was the only available communication resource.

Ruth Willet and her mom Sharon, KM4TVU, participated in ARRL's highly successful National Parks on the Air (NPOTA) event in 2016, which also was mentioned in the Kettering article.

"It's a stress relief for me," Willet said of ham radio. "I really enjoy sharing this hobby with other students."
