BEST DAM RIDE 2023

?

Sunday October 8, 2023

Time to signup and guarantee your spot!

The date is Sunday October 8.?We (ARCA) need volunteers to man a 12 person communications network around the 100 mile Lake Thurmond course.

This is a lot of fun as the event is a Ride not a Race and therefore not intense. It is a charitable event sponsored by Chain Reaction Bicycle in Evans. This year the ride will?support the SORBA CSRA Bike Group, and the Liam Caracci Foundation.?The ARCA provides communications support at designated water stops, recovery vehicles for breakdowns, mobile communications support for sponsor vehicles,?and a Network Control Station at the Start/Finish Area in the Lower Dam Recreation Area. You don't have to be an ARCA Club member to volunteer, just a licensed Amateur of any class with mobile VHF (2M) equipment capability capable of 10w or more output.

You will receive an event T-Shirt and there is a FREE BBQ in the picnic area after the ride for all participants and volunteers. For detailed information and display of?course routes, go to the events tab on the website.

If you want to participate, just click?the volunteer button below,?fill out the form, and submit. We will send you a complete information sheet and keep you informed of any changes as we get closer to the event.

This is our top public service?event of the year and it fills up fast. So don't delay signing up!

Volunteer!!

HAM Sep, Training via ZOOM

SCHEART will be offering Ham (Amateur) Radio classes in September of 2023. This is for Technician, General and Extra. All classes will be running from?September 18th to September 22nd?from 6pm to 9pm. Some classes will not take the whole week but will finish when all the material is covered. These classes run concurrently. You can only choose one of the classes.

We’re presenting the classes by video conference using Zoom (?) If you didn’t have the time to attend in person before, now is your chance. Email me at?midlandsve@.... I’ll forward your email to your instructor, They will send you an invitation to the video conference.

Here’s a tutorial on how to use zoom:?
If you’ve never used videoconferencing before, Here’s a couple of tips:

Use a headset or headphones. Any headphones that plug into your computer will do. Even the wired ones that came with your cell phone, if it’s using the 1/8” plug. This eliminates feedback when you unmute your microphone.
Mute your microphone when not speaking to the instructor. Otherwise, the class will hear any background noise from your computer.
Find the text/chat function and use it.
New hams must start out with the Technician course.

All classes are free. If you wish to attend, RSVP to?MidlandsVE@....?Be sure to tell me which class you want to take and?include you cell number.

Testing will be offered on?September 23rd?at 08:30 am at SCETV headquarters, 1041 George Rogers Blvd in Columbia.? We’ll take care of the administrative work first and start the testing at when the admin work is done. Bring a photo ID, an original and copy of any Ham Radio license, your FRN and $10.00 cash. If a child is testing and has no photo I.D., bring a copy of a birth certificate.

If you are testing for the first time, you must bring your FCC Registration Number (FRN), which you can get here:

If you’re coming for testing only, email us so we can plan accordingly.

Please refer any questions to?midlandsve@....

ARRL Membership Dues Announced

ARRL dues for 2024 have been announced. Please remember, whether you agree with all their actions, the ARRL is the only national voice for ham radio that we have. A recent proposal for 20KW transmitters adjacent to the HF ham bands across the country demonstrates why the ARRL is still relevant.

Hi Jim.

Yes, count me in for SEED in September.

I can stay from set up until about 1PM.

I wear a XXL t-shirt.

Are we doing the usual morse code, wrist beads, and QSL cards this year?

73, stay safe and stay healthy.

BIG SC POTA Weekend being planned

If you are into POTA (Parks On The Air) or have been just thinking about it, you want to mark you calendars for Sept 16 & 17 weekend. Plans are coming together for a grand SC POTA weekend. That's right an attempt to activate all 151 POTA sites in South Carolina (or as many as possible)! So checkout those portable rigs and standby for more information to come.
