24 hour clock kit

Looking for a winter project???? I came across this kit on Ebay. I bought three and sold one to Dave (WB5NHL).? We built them.

I was considering these as a club build, but have decided not to for the following reasons:
?These are not 12 or 24 hour clocks, just 24 hour. Temp display is in Celsius. You cannot change this.
The kit is not a beginners kit.
Instructions are marginal, solder pads on the pc board are very small.?
?You would need a small tipped temp controlled iron and fine gauge solder, along with steady hands. And a magnifying glass.

You will have to buy a separate coin battery (CR1220) and buy or pull out of your junk drawer, a cellphone charger with a usb port to power the unit. Comes with a power cord. The battery is power backup.

On the plus side....it is quite a bargain!!! And can be assembled in about 2 hours. Big bright large display with choice of LED colors. Mine worked first time. One for UTC and one for local time. About two weeks lead time from China.
So...if you think you are up to it, enjoy, and remember, Dave and I can help if needed. 73? de Carl KP2L

MIT Radio Society, EE and Computer Science Department Hosting Radio Technology Lectures

01/08/2019

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Radio Society (W1MX) and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) are hosting a series of public lectures on “everything radio,” presented by academics and industry professionals. The series began on Tuesday, January 8.

Sessions are also accessible via YouTube, courtesy of MIT Student Cable ().

Each self-contained talk addresses a different facet of radio, ranging from modulation, propagation, and Amateur Radio, to radar, radio astronomy, space-based applications, and cellular and 5G technology. No prior experience with radio is necessary.

The is on the EECS Independent Activities Period (IAP) page, under the Radio Technology, History, and Applications tab (click “Expand All” to view). For more information, contact Daniel Sheen, KC1EPN.?

**

Dave and I have been viewing some of them. These are truly great! If you don’t like formulas, just close your eyes. You will still learn a lot. The presenters are all HAMs, research Scientists and Professors at the Haystack Observatory in north west Boston.

March 11th 2019 NABRC meeting program SKYWARN Training

Gentlemen,
I have scheduled Doug Anderson from the National Weather Service in Columbia SC to come to our NABRC meeting at Aiken Regional the night of March 11th, 2019. He will present a basic Skywarn spotter class.? It is about 2 hours long so maybe we could start early and limit club business that night.? At the end of the training he will provide a web link for those wishing to formally register as a trained spotter.

?While there is no need to pre-register if you want to attend, I would like to give Doug an approximate head count. So I will poll our membership at the February meeting.? And if we so desire,? he could come back and present the "advanced skywarn" class.

Mark your calendars, should be fun.

As always if you would like to give a presentation to our club email me with your idea.

Happy Holidays/73

Proposed Rule Making position

The ARSFI board of Directors filed with the FCC a comprehensive response to the online and media campaign that Theodore Rappaport has been leading to get the FCC to dismiss the pending Notice of Proposed Rule Making (Docket No. 16-239). The proposal would eliminate the current 300 baud limit on HF digital transmissions. We're in favor of the proposed rule making--plus the ARRL's suggested 2.8 kHz bandwidth limit--for many reasons, mostly because the advancement of the radio art is impeded without it. For most Winlink stakeholders it will allow Pactor 4 in the USA.?

Rappaport is spreading unrelated emotional fire, claiming that ARC protocols and similar wide-band connected digital modes and modes that are hard, expensive (or need proprietary hardware, firmware or software) to intercept communications on-the-air need to be removed from the amateur bands. He says these modes encourage crime, terrorism and are a threat to national security. His arguments would have the FCC remove Winlink, D*Star, Fusion, and all 'connected' modes not easily intercepted on-air by unskilled operators without a proprietary component in the monitoring equipment?before addressing the 300 symbols/second NPRM. He would set amateurs back 40 years or more with respect to the radio art and digital techniques. We don't have to say how devastating the consequences would be if Winlink and all others using similar modes disappeared from the ham bands.

Please visit our web site for full information:

You can download and read the letter we wrote to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, our response paper, and Rappaport's two recent letters to the FCC. Make your own decision, but make it an informed decision!

If you use Winlink, you have a stake in this. We urge you to immediately file a comment on the FCC's ECFS. Instructions are available from the link above. Time is of the essence. You don't have to write a masterpiece. An 'express' comment of your opinion about the ARSFI filing is all that's needed.

This is a direct and serious threat to Winlink's existence on the amateur radio bands. Thanks for your support!

CSRA Ham Technician Prep Course Jan 5-6 2019

A 1.5-day HAM Technician class will be held on Saturday Jan 5 from 8am-5pm and finish up on Sunday Jan 6 from 12noon-4pm. Pizza will be provided on Saturday. The classes will be held in a residence in Graniteville, SC. About 4 miles west of Aiken SC.

A limited number of spaces are available. There is NO charge for the classes, or pizza. Please call or send an email that you are coming, and a contact number or email address.? Phone 803-292-9559 or email khufford@...

During this Christmas break time, would be a great time to study to become a licensed HAM. Final prep for the test will be on Saturday and Sunday, January 5 and 6. Then on Thursday, JAN 10, 2019 you will be well prepared to take the test at 7 PM, ?Aiken SDA Church, 1714 Columbia Hwy N. 29801. It’s on the corner of US-1 and Gun Range Rd on the north side of town. Another way to study is on the internet. There are a couple of sites you could use. HAMEXAM.ORG? ? is a good one. You want to study Element 2: Technician You can use the Flash Cards to study, then practice taking Practice Exams. You can keep taking the exams.??

Each time you try, the exam recycles and uses mostly different questions. The Practice Exam questions are the SAME ones on the real exam. Each exam is 35 questions, multiple choice. You must get 26 correct to pass the test. Keep taking the practice exam till you can get 80-85% correct on EVERY exam. The better you do on the practice exam, the better you will do on the real one.

A great printed study guide is Gordon West Technician Class 2018-2022 Element 2 Radio License Preparation. They are about $23 on Amazon. Any questions send an email to khufford@... ?????????????????????????????????HAPPY LEARNING

The access to new users is stopped for a while. I did not expect the interest in the project. My machine is not able to serve all new users. The 400 to 500 PIN request per day was also not expected and had no time anymore to code. I an looking for a solution.. Maybe clustering.. I have to think about this.

Sorry that I do not answer the PIN request emails. Need some time to think about this.

You also need to have your callsign registered with US Trust as usual on DSTAR.

For some reason, the audio sounds better than any DSTAR radio, including the D74.

Some were complaining about the cost of the D74. Now with Peanuts you can have DSTAR on your $500-1,000 Android phone<sic>.

On Peanut you can talk with HAM amateurs around the world via an Android device. Some of the ROOMS are connected to DSTAR reflectors ( REF001C, REF030C, XRF076B, XRF076F, XRF71L, XRF070C etc.. ).

Supported hardware

·?????? Any Android device running Android 4.x of higher.
