Re: NABRC Meeting Jan 9 2024

Jim asked for a "show and tell". For my show and tell at Monday's meeting, I will discuss my new Christmas present, the "Hamclock" by wb0oew. The first few articles published on this gadget required that you build the hardware to run it, but now you can purchase a $50 microcomputer which runs it (it is "built in"). Presentation is similar to the GeoChron but price is only 10%.

Watch a half hour video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFYnthSdY3g&t=1029s
and a 22 min one here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BM7KFjyH9I (which shows several more ham programs you can run with the hardware).
?
Read up on it here https://clearskyinstitute.com/ham/HamClock/QST-HamClock.pdf and here https://www.n1fd.org/2023/08/24/hamclock/
Google for more.
?
purchase it for $50 here
?
I will try to answer any questions at the meeting.

Re: House Bill 4549

It would also be beneficial if each club member contacted their own representative (county voter registration can provide info), Ask them to sign on as cosponsors of the bill. After it gets out of the house it goes to the senate where it goes through the same procedure.? Legislature is only in session until May, which means we're looking at about 60 working days for this to happen.?

H4549 Amateur Radio Antenna Protection Act

Greetings to our ARRL Members of the Great Palmetto State,

I have exciting news to share with you. Bob Hill, KB3HNB in
Williamsburg County worked with the Honorable Representative Fawn
Pedalino (SC house District 64) to file SC House Bill 4549 The Amateur
Radio Antenna Protection Act. Full text of the bill can be found here:

We are very grateful to Representative Pedalino for filing this bill, it
has been referred to the house committee on Labor, Commerce and
Industry. This bill mirrors the current US House HR 4006, which seems
to be stalled at this point. The Bill would prevent HOAs from
restricting the installation of simple antennas for Licensed Amateur
Radio Operators. Towers and the like would have to go through a
permitting and approval process based on the local jurisdiction.

The house Labor, Commerce and Industry committee is made up of 18
members
Committee information:

District 2 representative - William E. "Bill" Sandifer III, Chairperson,
Oconee & Pickens Counites
District 3 representative - Jerry T. Carter, Pickens County
District 7 representative John Taliaferro "Jay" West IV, 1St V, Chair,
Abbeville, Anderson & Greenville Cty
District 9 representative Anne J. Thayer, Anderson County
District 26 representative R. Raye Felder, York County
District 34 representative Roger A. Nutt, Spartanburg County
District 37 representative Steven Wayne Long, Spartanburg County
District 43 representative Thomas R. "Randy" Ligon, Chester and York
Counites
District 53 representative Richard L. "Richie" Yow, Chesterfield,
Darlington & Lancaster Counties
District 62 representative Robert Q. Williams, Darlington & Florence
Counties
District 81 representative Bart T. Blackwell, Aiken County
District 84 representative Melissa Lackey Oremus, Aiken County
District 93 representative Russell L. Ott, Calhoun, Lexington &
Orangeburg Counties
District 94 representative Gil Gatch, Charleston & Dorchester Counties
District 101 representative Roger K. Kirby, Berkeley, Florence &
Williamsburg Counties
District 102 representative Joseph H. Jefferson, Jr.,2nd V. Chair,
Berkeley & Dorchester Counties
District 103 representative Carl L. Anderson, Berkeley, Georgetown &
Horry Counties
District 105 representative Kevin Hardee, Horry County

If you live in these districts we need you to voice your support for the
bill and help get it out of committee to the full house, then Senate and
Governor. Please e-mail, write or call your representative
highlighting that Amateur Radio plays an important part in Emergency
Preparedness, Community Service, Disaster Recovery and Education.
We will be sending further communication in the next day or two with
highlight points and how you can encourage your representative whether
they are on the committee or not to co-sponsor the bill.

This a very important opportunity to help showcase amateur radio and to
help all amateurs across the Palmetto State.

CSRA Ham Technician Prep Course Jan 6-7 2024

KENT HUFFORD, KQ4KK

A 1.5-day HAM Technician class will be held on Saturday Jan 6 from 8am-5pm and finish up on Sunday Jan 7 from 12noon-3pm. Pizza will be provided on Saturday. The classes will be held in a residence in Graniteville, SC. About 4 miles west of Aiken SC. We have had a 100% pass rate in the past.

A limited number of spaces are available. There is NO charge for the classes, or pizza. Please call or send an email that you are coming, and a contact number or email address. Phone 803-292-9559 or email kq4kkham@... or dave@... ?If we have a good turnout, it might be possible to have a VE team test on Sunday afternoon.

During this Christmas break time, would be a great time to study to become a licensed HAM. Final prep for the test will be on Saturday and Sunday, January 6 and 7. Then on Thursday, JAN 11,2024 you will be well prepared to take the test at 7 PM, Aiken SDA Church, 1714 Columbia Hwy N. 29801. It’蝉 on the corner of US-1 and Gun Range Rd on the north side of town. Another way to study is on the internet. There are a couple of sites you could use. HAMEXAM.ORG? ? is a good one. You want to study Element 2: Technician You can use the Flash Cards to study, then practice taking Practice Exams. You can keep taking the exams.

Each time you try, the exam recycles and uses mostly different questions. The Practice Exam questions are the SAME ones on the real exam. Each exam is 35 questions, multiple choice. You must get 26 correct to pass the test. Keep taking the practice exam till you can get 80-85% correct on EVERY exam. The better you do on the practice exam, the better you will do on the real one. Attending the class will give you the greatest chance to pass the FCC exam.

A great printed study guide is Gordon West Technician Class 2022-2026 Element 2 Radio Technician Class Study Guide. They are about $29 on Amazon or HRO, but not required to attend the class. Any questions send an email to kq4kkham@...

A gift suggestion

KENT HUFFORD, KQ4KK

开云体育

’Tis the season to be jolly, and being jolly means giving meaningful gifts. Here is a suggestion for a great Holiday gift you can give the entire state of South Carolina, a tax deductible donation to SCHEART Inc!

As ham radio operators, you appreciate the need for communications in disasters and emergencies, and the statewide SCHEART VHF, UHF and DMR networks are a key component in South Carolina emcomm strategies. SCHEART has provided critical communications during past events, like the widespread floods of 2015, Hurricanes Matthew (2016), Irma (2017), Florence (2018) and Ian (2022), just to mention some of the more recent emergencies among the many we have faced. The SCHEART networks are there to back up critical emergency communications needs in South Carolina. No other alternative network has statewide capability; SCHEART has redundant networks to meet public safety needs.

When not providing emergency communications, the SCHEART networks are there for local amateur operators to use, as well as itinerate operators passing through South Carolina.

The maintenance of these??networks are provided by South Carolina Educational TV, and they have done a good job of keeping existing systems working. But, there is a continuing need to expand these networks to support a growing SC public. There is a need to enhance the capability and functions with new communications technologies and equipment. We have developed plans for ongoing system upgrades, but the SC ETV budget does not cover them.

For this reason, SCHEART Inc. was created as a private foundation to fund the necessary expansions and enhancement. SCHEART Inc. is privately funded by foundations, grants and donations from people like you.?

This is a great opportunity for you to give a gift to the entire state of South Carolina this Holiday season. No gift is too small, or too big. Any amount that you are wiling to give is greatly appreciated and will be used solely for the SCHEART system. All, 100%, of our funds are used to expand and enhance the SCHEART system. We have no employees, no overhead, and no expenses other than to support our sole mission. We hope you will be able to help us meet our goals.

Happy Holidays!

SCHEART Inc.

The next NABRC meeting is Monday, December 11 at the 6th floor classroom of the Aiken Regional Medical Centers. 6:30pm fellowship and meeting at 7:00pm

Prior to the pandemic, I gave a presentation on the newly developed nanoVNA, Vector Network Analyzer. Since my initial presentation there have been considerable developments/ improvements. I will give a brief presentation of current state i.e what's changed, improved and what hasn't. I will NOT be presenting how to use the nanoVNA. However, I will answer questions prior to the meeting and will have an example of recent nanoVNA.
