#EFHW 40M - getting close to the finish 8 #efhw
This project is far enough along, I figured I'd post a photo. It's an EFHW, 40M, which will have a capacitor compensation stuck at about 25 feet on the wire. The frame is made from 1/8" acetal stock, because it's what was handy. I wound the transformer as a 56:1 autotransformer. Yeah, I didn't leave enough room from the wire connector to the first strain relief hole, and that's bugging me enough that I'll probably use just 2 of them. :-P And, I need to get a longer #6 screw for the ground, for connecting the counterpoise wire. Every radio project requires at least one trip to the hardware store. Antenna connection is a BNC.

TechFest volunteer sign up sheet is live! 2
Hi all, TechFest is fast approaching (I know it's still August, but Nov 2 will be here before we know it). I REALLY REALLY REALLY need some people to sign up to help out with the event this year. I have a heavy travel schedule this fall and my bandwidth will be very tight. If we're going to pull this off, I need club members to step up and pitch in. I have nearly nailed down all of the speaker slots, so I mainly need help on event logistics: setup/breakdown, food/beverage, PR, signage, talk-in, signage, etc. I've created a sign-up sheet here: https://volunteersignup.org/4FE87 Please check it out and sign up for whatever you can. Also if you're interested in being the lead in one or more of the areas, drop me a note to let me know please. It's more than OK for people to sign up for more than one thing, provided they don't conflict. Thanks in advance, Mark -- --------------------- Mark Ehr | K0EHR President, 285 Tech Connect Radio Club Littleton, Colorado k0ehr@... Check out my ham radio blog: https://k0ehr.tech QRZ profile

TechFest is approaching fast -- we need presenters! 10
Hi all, As most of you probably know, we will be hosting our annual Tech Fest on Saturday November 2nd. The Tech Fest is an event where we have presenters cover technical topics of interest. As an example, last year we had presentations on the ARRL Clean Signal Initiative and Selecting an HF Transceiver, Using NanoVNAs, Amateur Radio and Starhaven Observatory, 3D Printing and APRS. I'm actively looking for hams that would be willing to present on an area of interest. The presentations will run approximately 45 minutes and can be PowerPoint, demonstrations, or any combination. Topics requested by last year's attendees were antennas, digital radio, operating with satellites, grounding, and using the club remote station. If you're interested in presenting, please send me a message. Thanks and 73, Mark -- --------------------- Mark Ehr | K0EHR President, 285 Tech Connect Radio Club Littleton, Colorado k0ehr@... Need a net controller for 285 Tech Nets in September 3
Hi everyone, Robb will be out of town for a few weeks in September, so we're looking for someone to step in and serve as a substitute net controller for him on September 3, 10, and 17. If you're interested in helping out, please let me know and I'll set you up with the net script and can answer any questions. If no one else steps up, I can take the 3rd and 17th but I'll be out of town on the 10th so we definitely need someone to cover that date. Please as always use your best judgment and safe practices in finding the hidden transmitter. The goal is to enjoy your hunt. Link for building a 2 meter Tape measure antenna. VHF 3EL Tape Measure Yagi. 每 NT1K 每 Welcome If you do not have attenuation you can scroll up or down a few hertz to weaken the input signal. Can also use just an HT and body fading. Hold the HT close to your chest and spin around slowly. Listening for a null Having an actual attenuator helps a lot. Another method to attenuate when close to transmitter is listening to the third harmonic. Just multiply the transmitter frequency by 3 and enter that 440 MHz frequency into the radio. ( do not transmit through attenuator it can damage it)

Reminder- TechConnect Radio Club Meeting. Aug 3 at 10 AM
Hi Everyone. The next 285 TechConnect Radio Club meeting will be held on Saturday, August 3, 10AM, at the Bridge Church at Bear Creek, North of Hwy 285 & Kipling. We have coffee & doughnuts at 9:30 so come early for the best seats. We will try something new for the August meeting. We will be making one or two projects to take home. Both will make use of your soldering skills, but using different methods. Larry Wein (K0NA) with lead a demo project on using surface mount technology and Corey McDonald (N5YCO) will lead a project building a 2 band HT flexible antenna. There will be a limited number of HT antenna kits and we are asking for a $12 dollar contribution (how about rounding up to $15 and anything left over will be donated to the club?). That would be about half the cost of purchasing a "super flexible signal stick" antenna. We are looking for a strong turn out to see if we want to do more complex projects in the future. The meeting is in the 2nd floor conference room at the Church, near Hwy 285 and Kipling. The door code is 28582#. Someone should be monitoring 146.520 if anyone has trouble getting in. See the club website <http://na0tc.org/doku.php?id=meetings> for complete directions to the church. Please park on the West side and enter through the West-side door. Stairs will be on your right, and an elevator is available. Can't hit Brandmeister TGs with new hotspot 4
New openSPOT4 Pro delivered today. Connected to my home network. SharkRF website says it*s connected to 3103.adn.systems (Brandmeister server for central US). My HT connection to the hotspot is confirmed. But can*t hit any Brandmeister talk groups. Time slot 1 (though SharkRF says either 1 or 2 will work) Color code 1 (which is supposed to be the hotspot default, though I can*t find it in the settings) Using the same TGs that work through local DMR repeaters. Any idea what I might have missed? Thanks for any help! Bill K1BP -- Bill Karsell K1BP

Your input is requested for August NA0TC Club Meeting
Hello. Reminder 每 There is no 285 TechConnect Radio Club Meeting for July. For the August 3, 2024 meeting we are planning a Make and Take, hands on project build and need your input. Please respond to the following short questionnaire by June 30, 2024 to help out the project leads. https://s.surveyplanet.com/ptak0v43 Background 每 We are planning on running three Take and Make stations at the August 3, 2024 285 NA0TC TechConnect Radio Club Meeting and need club members input to help plan. The three stations are: Larry Wein 每 Surface Mount Demo Project Cory McDonald 每 Super flexible HT antenna (Similar to the Signal Stick) Robert Polson 每 Portable Directional Measuring Tape Antenna We won*t have time for everyone to run through all three stations, so we need to get an idea of member preferences for each project so the leads can purchase parts and supplies. Please fill out the short questionnaire by June 30, 2024 so we can plan for the event. (Please respond even if you can*t make the event or are unsure!) We are looking forward to another great program and hope you can participate. For questions: Tony Montoya 每 k0mcw ahmontoya@... 285 TechConnect Radio Club Program Coordinator

DMR Etiquette 8
I'm still learning DMR. When I switch to a DMR talk group on my HT via a local repeater, I have to kerchunk the repeater before I can hear any traffic. I know that people in the TG can hear me announce my callsign, which seems rude if they're having a QSO. Is it better to kerchunk without speaking? That also seems rude. Field Day plans? 2
Hi all, Field day is rapidly approaching (June 22-23). Anyone have any fun plans? Unfortunately I'll be in Seattle on a business / pleasure trip, visiting my daughter and going to a cloud security conference, so I won't be able to participate this year. We don't have anything formal planned through the 285 club, but other area clubs have Field Day events. Parker Radio Club does an awesome job on Field Day. They get together at a campground in Woodland Park (some people camp as early as the Wednesday before!) and they have plenty of activities planned including a dinner on Saturday night. Definitely check it out! https://www.parkerradio.org/event/field-day-3/ Denver Radio Club doesn't appear to be doing anything this year, which is interesting as they usually have a nice set up in Golden. At any rate, even if you don't venture outdoors for Field Day, you can still participate. Remember that the idea is to practice operating skills during an emergency, e.g. running low power, on battery / renewable power sources, etc. If you haven't participated in Field Day in the past, it's a whole lot of fun. Tons of activity on bands using all modes. A couple of years ago I ran completely QRP on battery / solar and I still got around a hundred QSOs! Check out the details on ARRL Field Day here. Have a great Field Day and please report back on your experiences this year! 73, Mark --------------------- Mark Ehr | K0EHR President, 285 Tech Connect Radio Club Littleton, Colorado k0ehr@... Powerpole / Wago adapter 3
Saw these on YouTube, took a screenshot. Nifty idea - provides a quick way to attach power poles in an ad-hoc situation, as long as you can strip the wires. Might be useful in a field situation, where you don't happen to have your full power pole kit with you. I'm tempted to make a couple. The Wago inline splices are $9.45 for a dozen. https://www.amazon.com/221-2401-Compact-Splicing-Inline-Connectors/dp/B0BZ5XHW23/ A little heat-shrink and you've got it. I haven't looked a what KE5EZZ is charging for those - doesn't seem to have a web site up.

3D Printing Update #3dprint
If I can get past the phase here of printing things for my 3d printer, I might just get back to printing things for amateur radio. :) Octoprint is working great, and the webcam is working without having to fiddle with any settings. Currently working on a permanent mount for the cam, figuring out positioning. Lighting needs a bit of work too. And, noise reduction is going to be a must, so I guess I'll be looking at a shroud that'll let me mount Noctua fans. The homebrew noise baffle, made with cardboard and various foam I have, hasn't helped at all.
