Praise for Quisk

Hi All,

?

Just a quick note of praise to Jim, N2ADR, about Quisk. Over the years I¡¯ve used Quisk on Windows and Linux with success but it has never been a quick and easy process. Connecting digital apps was also somewhat challenging.

?

I haven¡¯t used Quisk in a while but with the IQ balance adjustment available for softrock type radios I decided to give it another go on windows. I must say setup was a breeze other than one issue I¡¯ll cover below. Setup and configuration of WSJT-X and Fldigi went smoothly following the directions. IMHO Quisk has become a mature and capable program that I¡¯ll be recommending to folks.

?

The only issue I had was with how you install WSJT-X. Way back many years ago I was told to always install WSJT-X and WSPR to the system path. I don¡¯t remember the reason now but that is how I¡¯ve done it for many years. The issue is, if you have WSJT-X installed to the system path and you try and run Quisk with a softrock type radio, Quisk will not load. Quisk was working until I installed WSJT-X so I uninstalled it and reinstalled using default path and Quisk worked normally again.

?

Thanks again Jim for your many years of developing Quisk into a very capable and easy to use program!

Thanks Stew, I appreciate it. I haven't had trouble with WSJT-X on Windows, but I will try to figure out what is happening. Has anyone else had this trouble?

Hi Jim,
?
I was working on a Win 11 computer and just tried a Win 10 computer just in case this was a Win11 issue. ? If you install WSJT-X to system path for current user or for all users Quisk will not load, in? my case with a softrock type radio.? No issues if you install WSJT-X with default settings which most folks will use.
?
quisk_logfile doesn't show any errors.

I am not having any luck finding the problem with WSJT-X. Will Quisk start if you set "Start WSJT-X" to "Never"?? If it is "Never" what happens when you change it to "Main Rx0 now"? Will Quisk crash? And what path did you enter in the WSJT-X configuration window?

Hi Jim,
?
Quisk is currently set to "Never".? I did not change the the path in the WSJT-X configuration window so it is set to the usual path.? I could change that path and see what happens.

Hi Jim,
?
Changing the path in Quisk did not fix the issue.? When I clicked on change path, Quisk defaulted to the correct folder, C:\WSJT\wsjtx\bin, but I added it anyways.
?
I'm not sure what is different with the install path choices.? It still installs the exe to the same location.? It even installs to this same directory with the WSJT-X - quisk right next to it.. ?C:\Users\*user*\AppData\Local\WSJT-X
?
If I load quisk using configfileradio and with WSJT-X configured to automatically load, Quisk and WSJT-X loads fine.? It just doesn't work when using a softrock type radio no matter how" Start WSJT-X" is configured.
?
Debug 2 for softrock type radio will open a text window but doesn't show anything then closes.
?
All this isn't a big deal if you install WSJT-X with the default path.? At least in may case on two different computers.

Just a hunch, but what are your sound devices? With Softrock you need six audio devices; two for radio sound and mic, two for WSJT-X and two for Softrock. Are they independent?

I have 6 sound devices.? Radio sound and mic are also my computer speakers and mic.

I un-installed my WSJT-X and re-installed it and checked "Add to system path for all users". My Quisk runs fine with a Softrock. So I am having trouble identifying the problem.
?
Can you please go to the directory where quisk.py is, and start Quisk in Power Shell with the command "python quisk.py". You may get useful information in the terminal window. My Quisk gets a traceback from the USB system, but runs fine anyway.

Hi Jim,
?
Running the command python quisk.py , Quisk will load properly when WSJT-X is installed to system path for all users.
?
My short cut to run Quisk per your instruction uses, "Use "quisk.exe" as the command and "Quisk" as the name. The "quisk.exe" program is in your_install_directory\Scripts" as the name" and this will not work when WSJT-X is installed to system path.

Thank you, that was very helpful. When WSJT-X is installed to the system path it puts its "bin" directory on the path. This directory has DLLs with the same names as Quisk DLLs and creates conflicts. When Windows has DLL conflicts it dies without an error message.
?
I will see what I can do about this.

Hello Stew,
?
Please delete your old Quisk shortcut and create a new shortcut by right-clicking the screen. If there is only one Python on your PC enter the location:
?
pythonw -m quisk
?
If you need to specify the python version (eg, 3.8) enter:
?
pyw -3.8 -m quisk
?
Please let me know if it works.

Hi Jim,
?
Neither command works with WSJT-X installed to path for all users.? I only have one python version installed but gave the second command a go.
?
Just to be clear.? I do have the popup for radio selection but selecting a radio other than configfileradio, Quisk will not load.
?
The shortcut is looking in the right folder for pythonw but just to be sure here is the target and start in links of the shortcut:
Target: C:\Users\*user*\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python311\pythonw.exe -m quisk
Start in: C:\Users\*user*\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python311

Hi Stew,

When you installed Python what path did it update,? the system path or the user path.? On my system, python is using the user path.

Hi Ron,
?
I don't 100% remember the exact choice presented, but I installed Python to the system path per instructions and then there are usually 2 choices, current user and all users.? I always choose current user.

For me this is not a big deal.? If WSJT-X is not installed to a system path everything works fine.
