Feature rich sound decoders
Merry Christmas everyone. Looking for advice on sound decoders with lots of features. I received a new BLI SW7 switcher with a Paragon 4 sound decoder installed. Hands down the sound and feature set is so much better than the other 2 drop ins I have on my Kato diesels, a MRC and a Digitrax SDXN167, the newer one. The Digitrax is the most anemic sound wise, I may need to reset it and try a different profile in Decoder Pro. But the BLI honestly opened my eyes(ears) to what sounds can be had with these. Is there a brand similar to the Paragon 4 in terms of feature set and sound quality? It’s my understanding the Paragon 4 only comes in BLI locos and cannot be purchased separately. Would love to get my Kato’s up to a similar standard.? |
开云体育I am very happy with ESU LokSound.? It is the most customizable of any I have seen and can get considerably more sound out of a given speaker arrangement.? It can be programmed conventionally but using their programmer and software is so very much better. The Soundtrax Tsunami is not bad either but not as customizable. Ditto on what Ken said. Esu is pretty amazing.
If you're looking for a very tiny decoder, Zimo makes one small enough to fit in the cab of a Life-like SW9 along with a speaker. Everything else, I am standardizing on ESU. Of note, speakers have come a long way; digitrax oval speakers are horrible. Try the sbs4dcc ones before you rip out the decoder. -Randy Sent from my infernal iPhone |
开云体育I’m in the ESU camp as well, have a programmer and if I can’t get an engine with ESU will buy a non-DCC unit and install myself. ?Lot easier to maintain fleet and working together as units that way.Jon On Dec 28, 2024, at 11:22?AM, mark lynn via groups.io <mlynn72130@...> wrote:

ESU here, too.? I have fitted an ESU sound decoder into an n-scale Atlas Shay .. so these things are possible.? David On Sat, Dec 28, 2024 at 10:03?AM Jon Watson via <csxjon=[email protected]> wrote:

ESU decoders support Railcom (NMRA standard) transponding, so command stations (including ESU and TCS) that also support Railcom will give you a better user experience.
?
Railcom allows decoders to communicate back to the command station for identification, command confirmation, decoder readback, etc., as well as programming on the main, while other locos are present and/or running on the mainline. Railcom decoder programming with readback is MUCH faster than using a conventional programming track.?
?
Zimo and TCS decoders also support Railcom.

开云体育Thanks for all the info. I’ll certainly keep Railcom in the back of my mind for the future but I’m already in the deep end with Loconet/Digitrax equipment. I will say the ESU command stations do look nice and are very tempting.?Chuck On Dec 30, 2024, at 12:20 PM, Andy - Arlington TX via groups.io <andy.d.j1s@...> wrote:
