I always have lathe with one.?
If ever wonder how did tapper barrows.
They did in one cut with a follower rest and full length tapper attachment.?
The follower rest is setup on the straight round shaft and then tapper is turn in one pass.?

The shaft on right side is machine 0.66929" [17mm] ±0.0001"? the threads are 5/8" NF on 3/4" Hex bar stock.?

Like roller box but do use a follower rest too.?
If point the end of hex or square shafts a box or roller box will work great.
A box type is easy to make in shop too.

Geomagnetic storm of 1859, largest geomagnetic storm ever recorded. The storm, which occurred on Sept. 2, 1859, produced intense auroral displays as far south as the tropics. It also caused fires as the enhanced electric current flowing through telegraph wires ignited recording tape at telegraph stations. On the previous day, British astronomer Richard Carrington of the Royal Greenwich Observatory had made the first observations of a white-light solar flare, a bright spot suddenly appearing on the Sun. Carrington noted the coincidence (but did not claim a direct connection) between the geomagnetic storm and the solar flare, thus prefiguring the discipline of space weather research.

It is now thought that the active region on the Sun that produced the white-light flare also produced a fast coronal mass ejection (CME), a large eruption of magnetized plasma that subsequently produced the geomagnetic storm. Although CMEs are often associated with solar flares, the two can occur independently.

Finding True North in the Northern Hemisphere

    Locate Polaris, the North Star.?Polaris is the brightest star in the constellation Ursa Minor, also known as the Little Bear or Little Dipper. The North Star is the tip of the Little Dipper’s handle, or the tail of the Little Bear.??is important to star navigation because it remains almost in the same spot all night.
    • The star is called Polaris because it appears within a degree of the Celestial North Pole and therefore appears to not move in the night sky.
    • In Greek mythology, Zeus rewarded two bears with a home in the stars of the night sky. When he threw them up there, he swung them by their tails, which elongated and formed the Ursa Minor constellation.
    • Today, most people refer to Ursa Minor as the Little Dipper instead of the Little Bear because the seven stars that make up the constellation look like a small water dipper.

Identifying South in the Southern Hemisphere

At this time there was no real time keeping for Longitude.

By this time they figure out latitude using a ASTROLABE and the sun move 23?° up and down in 365 days.

?The Accuracy was lest than ?° off or (17 NM , 19.7 miles , 34.5KM) Even today's standards that is close.
The main way for Longitude was to use Dead Reckoning a hourglass and rope with knots at given spacing and board at end and a Compass.

A sundiel could be used for time .

How accrucy can get on open ocean

 

Here one how Accurate can is a compass.
This helps
The resolution on a digital component is 0.1° .
Using solar north a simple way of finding Longitude gives a location to at the Equator of lessthan 7 NM. The closer you get to poles greater accrucy.
This using a simple sundial solar noon only and very large compassion.
At 35° latitude accrucy within 3.9 NM .
Accrucy on Ladatude using a veneer type sextant with a 6 minute veneer is 6.8 miles.
On 6 min veneer can easily read to 3 minutes or 3.4 miles.

This was the first actual job on this mill was actually for this mill.
?
The vise was a horrible import that was rendered into a useable one with a bunch of mods.
The jaws were surface ground, the moveable jaw was modified to to tighten the tolerances, a shoe was machined for the moveable jaw and a bronze thrust button was machined for the closing screw.
I added three hold down bolt homes to the front of it, machined registers on both ends of it and milled the hold down slot on the main casting to fix it to the table with a clamp below the top surfaces of the vise.
