Re: Machining Square bare using steady rest.
We always called that a cat's head.
?
I worked at an outfit where we made vacuum chambers made out of welded seam 304 stainless steel tubing that was never round enough to use a steady rest on it.
The cat's head gave us a round surface to allow for steady rest support when machining the end faces of the tubes. |
Re: Projects ,on ,mini lathes,
I sold my company in 2004
Yes it is Smith Door , Smith Doors, Smith Hangar Door , JW Smith and Smith Industrial is found on the castings and DBA.?
?
It started with father in building tee hangars using JW Smith, SMITH INDUSTRIAL was for manufacturing model engines which never happen.?
Then everyone was sending checks with Smith Hangar door , Smith Door or Smith Doors. So 1980’s just started on new patterns Smith Door and never changed on older patterns.??
?
I was in aircraft hangar and Door from 1970’s and just doors after 1976 till 2004 most of my life.?
?
I hope that helps?

Re: Projects ,on ,mini lathes,
开云体育Yeah, I had a 1963 Cherokee 180 for several years. I've built two
hangars and made the 40' bi-fold doors from scratch. Are you the Smith doors I see on display at Oshkosh? Stuart On 1/30/25 21:01, davesmith1800 wrote:

开云体育Here's the bench my wife and I built for our lathe.? Simple steel tube and angle with sheet metal topped OSB.? The lower shelves will just be OSB but we didn't get a chance to make them before our unexpected travel.? I also want to put a bit of cross bracing on this, it sways a bit when cranking the slide a lot.Construction hint:? There are angle supports under the table where the lathe is bolted down, so the wooden top is not holding up anything other than tools. The legs have nuts welded in and adjustable feet. In the picture the feet and sheet metal haven't been added yet, you can see the metal in the background. ![]() On 31-Jan-25 0:55, davesmith1800 wrote:

Re: Rotary table on mini lathe
Machine tools are great for making more tools.? I like that your lathe looks like it's used, not a polished store display.? I'm naturally scruffy and my tools often look the same, I'm not big on polishing except when needed.
?
I need to mount the X drive on my mill, that was one of the things stolen.? The replacement wasn't drilled to match my table. But this is a lower priority, I didn't have a motor drive on my old mill and used that for around 20 years, often on long items.? Good exercise. |
Re: My mini lathe
And, I unexpectedly had to use the lathe today.? When I got the milling machine, a box of parts was stolen in transit.? The vendor shipped replacements and all seemed well.
?
Well... I went to drill a long item and found the X-axis handwheel was a bit too big... hits something hanging off the end of the table.
?
That just won't do.? Now if I only had something that could make a round item smaller...
?
?
Now it fits.? Some day when I have black spray paint for something else I'll repaint this.

My mini lathe
Here's what I have.? I used to have a Grizzly 7x14 but sold that when we moved.? Of course I bought a bigger lathe for the new house and made sure the workshop is heated.? I hated working in freezing weather in the old house.
?
The picture is right after we got it, but then we were away quite a bit due to unforeseen political events.? We're now back and don't plan any long trips so we're busy finishing the house and the lathe is finally getting used again.
?
![]() ?
We also got a new mill to replace our old one also left behind.? We need to finish installing this, but it's working fine as is.
