Advice for new computer
21
My 2011 MacBook Pro still works but I am having difficulty printing and interacting with financial websites along with others. Also having the same problems with my 3 iPads, the most recent only a few months old. I have a MacBook Air inherited from my wife that is about 4 years old. It doesn’t have the above problems but I don’t like the way websites and banking software displays. I have to do too much scrolling vertically and horizontally. The specs say the two laptops have about the same screen size but the older pro seems much larger. I am considering an iMac 26” or the larger MacBook Pro. Being that the iMac is about $1000 less and I like the size I am leaning towards that. However, the convenience of the laptop being more portable is a big plus. Not for travel but for using in several places around the house. I am not sure about how much memory I should get or which processor. I am not gaming or doing major video editing. Being old school I feel more memory is better but have read that is no longer true. I tend to keep my computers longer than many others so this may be my final purchase. I would trade in the Macbook light on the new computer. All opinions are welcome. Thanks, Bobby

My daughter’s mail app on her new IPad says “No Mail” even though her phone and desktop show her mail and new mail. Anyone have any ideas? Joan

log-in password sometimes rejected
9
This is a relatively new, bought from Apple, M3 MacBook Air 15 inch, running Sequoia 15.3.2. Today, for the second time, it has refused my log-in password from the log-in screen. Turning the machine off and restarting cures the problem - mercifully! Has anyone else noticed this behaviour, please? Keith

UNITED IoS app locks up after iOS update to 18.4

Hard Drive Stops/Starts
13
I have a new Mac Mini, 16/256 (currently 75 GB available) with the latest Sequoia update. Attached to it is a hard drive enclosure that I’ve been using for a couple of years with a 2015 iMac, 16/1T running Monterey. With the iMac the hard drives would spin up and stay running while the iMac was in use. With the Mac Mini the drives spin up when I wake the Mini but are regularly spinning down and then almost immediately spinning up again. I have turned to OFF “Put hard disks to sleep when possible”. Any idea as to how to stop the drives from spinning up/down so frequently? I am hoping this may be due to the small internal storage, which I have ordered a 2TB replacement, and maybe this will solve the problem with the external drive. Thanks in advance to responses. Tracking sleep in iOS/watchOS
10
I have central sleep apnea, for which I sleep using an “ASV” (automated servo-ventilation) machine. Recently, for no reason other than “I can,” I started using the iOS and watchOS “Health” apps to track my sleep stages (light, deep, and REM), but it seems I must MANUALLY activate the “Sleep” app on my watch in order for that to work. Is that how it should be? Both watchOS and iOS are current. My phone is a 14Pro and my watch is a Series 7 (GPS + Cellular). If I don’t do that, my phone shows interrupted blocks of time all in turquoise color and DRAMATICALLY overstates my sleep time, including even times when I’m up and walking around. Has anyone else tried using this? It seems bizarrely inaccurate (again, unless the last thing I do when getting into bed is to MANUALLY trigger the “Sleep” app on my watch. -- Jim Robertson

Mac Mini M4 SSD upgrade - results
I recently wrote about the external drive spinning down and up constantly on my Mac Mini M4. I’d mentioned that it was a 256 SSD and that I had ordered a replacement SSD. It came this week and I have run into a problem. I installed the new 2TB SSD. When trying to install restore the Mac in DFU mode I am getting a window which reads: The Mac “Mac” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (2006). This happened with three tries with the latest download software, clicking Option and Restore, to select the downloaded software. I also tried with an earlier version of the software. Might anyone have seemed advice to how I might proceed? Also, my wife has the same set up - M4 Mac Mini with 256 SSD. I installed her’s with a new SSD and all went well. Note for those interested: The SSD from Expand Mac Mini was a complete kit with screwdrivers and tools to do the job completely. The other SSD was from Amazon and was just the SSD - no tools included. In case you wonder, the SSD from Expand Mac Min is the troublesome one, though my problem may not be with the SSD. Also, I found one of the Mini’s hard to get off the bottom cover. I actually broke a plastic prying tool trying to open it. And in one, the screw on the original SSD was extremely tight and required a great deal of pressure to budge it. And that’s all I know about that. Thank you, Jim Willett

Upgrade OS from High Sierra on 2017 iMac
12
About browsers: I still use Brave and Safari for sites where they still work. For other sites I use Chrome: Version 116.0.5845.187 (Official Build) (x86_64). So far I've only run into a couple of sites that had reduced function in my Chrome. But every time I use it it gives me this message: "To get future Google Chrome updates, you'll need macOS 10.15 or later." Randy wrote: >For now all that she needs is to download a Web browser that works reliably under High Sierra. > >This one is made to order: > >Chromium-legacy (free) >"(Chrome stable channel)" for Mac OS X 10.7 to macOS 10.14 >https://github.com/blueboxd/chromium-legacy >Download page: >https://github.com/blueboxd/chromium-legacy/releases I followed those links but couldn't figure out how to download that Chromium. Brent may have eventually navigated those pages, but they're a complete mystery to me. Help! Patsy

Upgrade OS from High Sierra on 2017 iMac

Randy wrote: >When the day comes that she has purchased a new Mac, she can use Migration Assistant to move all of her data to a new Mac. Migration Assistant would be wonderful. How will I know when I need a new Mac? I'll come back to you then, I see that the 27" has been discontinued. And new iMacs are very expensive. I don't have that kind of money. My partner bought this iMac for me before he retired and his income dropped. He has no patience with Macs. I'm afraid my next computer will have Windows, and I'll have to learn that. I started with an Apple IIe. Then an original Mac II with a large display. And Macs ever since. I want to stay with Macs and large screens! Patsy

Finder Not Responding
19
I have a 2021 M1 MacBook Pro that is issued to me by my company. A couple of weeks ago finder started giving me issues. I get the spinning beach ball and have to force quit finder. When I go into the force quit selection it shows finder is not responding. I attempted to boot into safe mode to see if that resolved the issue, using the instructions on Apple's support page for the M1, but I was unable to get into safe mode. I gave up after 3 tries. This was on Thursday evening and after the Mac booted up finder worked fine all day Friday. I put my Mac to sleep Friday evening, used it for a few minutes on Sunday then put it back to sleep. Today, finder is back to the spinning beach ball and I have to force quit it. I use finder multiple times throughout the day so this is very frustrating. If this was my personal Mac I would perform an OS repair. Since this is not my personal Mac I'm not sure what the company has installed that will be uninstalled by doing an OS repair. Does anyone have any suggestions for me to try? Any idea what my company could've changed to prevent me from booting into safe mode? Thanks! ~~Gijzette

Upgrade OS from High Sierra on 2017 iMac

I'm an 83-year-old senior with a brain that doesn't work as well as it used to. I'm now a slow learner. I'm even more stressed out by change than I used to be, and I'm easily overwhelmed. I've been overwhelmed by even the thought of upgrading my OS and doing everything else necessary. I'm quite relieved that I don't need to upgrade my OS now. I can stay with High Sierra! To confirm, my computer is iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017). I should have checked that before starting this thread. About backup: I have Time Machine. Only once, long ago, have I retrieved a file from Time Machine. For safety do I also need a clone even if I'm not upgrading my OS? Next message about browsers. Patsy

Upgrade OS from High Sierra on 2018 iMac
15
Hello everybody! I stopped reading messages in all my Mac support groups when I got my iMac in 2018. Now I need you! Now that I'm retired I use my iMac only for the basics. My iMac works just fine except that many websites now tell me they don't support my browsers. I knew this was coming! I want to upgrade my OS from High Sierra to the latest. Then, of course, I'll need to upgrade my apps. And then learn how to work with the new stuff. Can I do it all myself? Can you tell me exactly what to do? Or refer me to a resource? If this has all been covered here before, tell me where/how to look. Thanks, Patsy

Shoot! It's 2017 even though I got it in 2018. I'll keep reading messages. I've changed the subject line. I know now I can't have the latest OS. Will later check what I can have. On to the next message. Thank you! Patsy

How you fill your days during retirement
2
I wonder a LOT how it can be that I’m always behind (I won’t confess when I last backed up my laptop) now that I’m retired and supposedly free of demands on my time. But, two examples (only one Apple-related) My 78th B-day is this weekend. If I can still stand up on my skis in 2 years, my annual pass for the gorgeous local Nordic Ski center, another 1500 feet up and 15 miles away from Bozeman will drop from $250/yr to $15/year (so far, it’s just about the ONLY thing optimistic I can look forward to). Just 5 minutes ago, I discovered that whoever pixelled or stole the “Chipmunk” emoji for Apple needs to get outside more. His creation is either a mythical beast or a mutant. Chipmunks do NOT have tails like that ? -- Jim Robertson

Connectology in home entertainment
2
This may not be the appropriate place to ask for help on this topic, but it involves Apple hardware (a 4K Apple TV). There’s an “enhanced” version of ARC HDMI (labeled eARC, for "enhanced audio return channel”) which is supposed to automate interoperability among remote controls for your TV, Sound Bar, DVD player, set-top box, and streaming box (like the Apple TV). For me, it appears the Apple TV is the “villain” which screws up everything else. So, I’m wondering if anyone here has fallen victim to such issues, and if so, what they’ve tried and how well it helped). Corollary question (just about the Apple TV, and of course I know I can experiment, but it’s a JUNGLE back there behind the wall-mounted 4K OLED). One suggestion is that I probably don’t NEED the HDMI cable that connects my Apple TV to my LG 4K OLED TV, because they’re also connected by Ethernet. And one suggestion regarding how to make all these boxes synchronize correctly has been to power off everything, then REMOVE everything from a/c power for a few minutes, then reconnect everything and permit the boxes to greet each other again. Sounds like witchcraft to me, but my spouse refuses to juggle remotes for video input source, sound output destination, and power on/off commands. -- Jim Robertson

Best way to stop unwanted texts
10
I am getting almost 10 unwanted texts a day asking for contributions to various political causes. I have been checking ‘delete and report junk’. My daughter says I should first reply STOP before the delete and report junk. Which if any of these methods will stop this infernal text messages? Regards, Joan
