Zooming Hints or Tips
开云体育Hi Mensa Virtual Meeting Hosts, ? Zooming around the Mensa Globe recently, I’ve noticed that Zoom has a lot of functionality that I’m not making use of, and even that I didn’t know about before. So I thought it would be fun for us all to send in a hint or tip about Zoom hosting that others may not have been made aware of yet. ? Here’s one to start: you can generate reports after each meeting of who logged into your meeting, when, and for how long. Can be pretty useful if you need to report on numbers, or follow up with particular participants. ? I look forwards to hearing other Mensa Zoom Hosts’ hints or tips! Best wishes, Andrew. ? Thanks Andrew, I have a couple of tips about muting - a valuable feature!?? Firstly, if you politely leave yourself muted during a discussion, the easiest way to chip in is to hold down the space bar, which temporarily allows you to speak. Secondly - and I haven't used it yet - is for dealing with the point where everyone seems to be talking at once.? I understand the host can mute everyone instantly with Alt + M.? Participants then have to unmute themselves, and as they do that you can either invite someone to speak first or sit back and watch a hopefully more ordered return to the discussion! Cheers, John ? ?

开云体育Thank you, Andres, for re-opening the conversation, ? I don’t really have a tip, more of a “don’t do what I did” and a puzzle. ? We used Zoom to present a quiz to 70 schools. The quiz was in the form of a timed powerpoint, that I, as the host, shared. The powerpoint also had some short you-tube films about nature embedded in it (learned how to do that, but that’s powerpoint, so this is not the place for it) ? Don’t do what I did: when you share a powerpoint with films embedded, or any other kind of soundfiles, make sure your settings are correct, you can opt to include sound when you make a choice of which file you want to share. I had a very quiet film for a minute or two until I figured it out. ? Now the puzzler: The timers in the powerpoint go wonky after a while, first slowing down and then not running at all. I have discovered no way to fix this. I eventually had to have my son sit next to me with his phone, indicating when time was up. Not very professional. If I just run the powerpoint, it’s fine. It has to be the combination of powerpoint/zoom/maybe the large number of participants? Any pointer would be welcome, because the final round of the quiz is coming up and we are anticipating the same to happen. ? Bye for now, ? Charlotte Hoyng Mensa the Netherlands ? ? ? 开云体育Thanks to John and Charlotte for your hints. I immediately wanted to ‘Mute All’ John’s post! And I’ve always found timed PowerPoint presentations troublesome, as you never go at the same speed on a presentation, let alone as the computer! Definitely worthwhile sharing sound if you want other people to hear it too. ? Any other hints or tips from others? ? For example – it’s useful to go in once a week and check for a Zoom update, as they keep releasing new and updated functionality. And reading the release notes will suddenly give you new ideas about what you can do than you had before! ? ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]

开云体育Hi all ? I’m using Zoom a lot less now that we are getting back to being able to meet in person. I don’t have a tip, I’m afraid – at least not terms of being able to say how it’s done, but I have noticed that as well as all the exotic backgrounds (which seem to need a lot of bandwidth and I can never get to work on my PC – and they don’t seem to be available in the iOS version on my ipad), it’s also possible to blur the background slightly so that although you as the speaker remain clearly visible, your background is out of focus and people can’t see the detail of your room. ? I’m going to abuse the topic by mentioning what I think is the very best underutilized feature of Zoom. There’s a very visible button at the bottom which pops up a text box for sending text messages to the participants. The underappreciated aspect of this, I think, is that one can use it to send out a link to one’s Discord server! [ducking] ? Matt"Nie mój cyrk, nie moje ma?py"

开云体育You’re right though, Matt, that discord is underappreciated. ? When the pandemic started, I was SURE that my school would embrace what the kids already knew and just teach us old people to use discord. But no, first zoom then teams. I vow to never use teams again. Hate hate hate Discord has its drawbacks too, especially when it comes to large groups. Still happiest with zoom. ? Re Discord, with Young Mensa, and some other online events, I have been moving more and more to just hosting them on Discord, with the added benefit that once someone has made an account to join the meeting etc, they can then hang around and chat too. I started a pilot server for Mensa a few months ago, but haven't advertised it widely to the membership yet as the office don't have the resource to field lots of membership requests, so it's just me keeping a list which is not ideal, but I'm working on a better system with some volunteers, involving?people messaging them through the mensa website to prove membership. Anyway.. if anyone would like to join it and use it, there's about 120 members on it now, probably 30 of those are vaguely active in the chat channels,?but there isn't?a great deal of activity. Overall, it's about 80% young mensa still, but? that's only because of where I've been advertising it On Mon, Nov 15, 2021 at 4:25 PM Charlotte Hoyong via <eureka=[email protected]> wrote:
