Zoom has started promoting two factor authentication to log in. This is a great security feature, and should be applauded.
?
It does pose some problems though, when you want to log in from a remote computer and you may not have your phone with you.
?
Do other people have concerns or comments regarding this change?

It gets a big “don’t care” from me, as I don’t ‘own’ any zoom meetings. The risks of being impersonated in zoom seem pretty small.

Don’t be too proud of that – it just means that you’re a boring person and no-one wants to be like you! ? ?

I don't see it as a problem, Andrew. You say that two-factor authentication is to be applauded, so we have to accept that it means carrying the second factor around with us - that is why they are 'mobile'!?
Incidentally, I hope that Matt knows you well enough to take your "boring" comment as a joke. Not everyone would have.

I assume that this won't affect me as I'm another of the very boring people who don't host Zoom meetings, I just turn up, having left all the technical stuff to those who are much cleverer than me. Some time ago I had to give up occasional selling on Amazon when they brought in two-step verification, which needed me to have two phone numbers, at the time I didn't see why I should have to acquire a mobile phone as well as a landline. Nowadays I wonder if it still works like that because many people no longer have a landline, only a mobile phone. ?

Not sure if this would affect me or not as I have login access to the London Mensa Zoom for running meetings so none of my details are listed.

For anyone who shares a regional account, it would be an issue to implement. In the NW we share the account between 3 or 4 of us, and I know a lot of other regions do this
Also, is there an invite link for this group? - I know of a couple of newer hosts who would appreciate joining

Zoom have already enabled 2-factor authentication, which you can turn on in your account settings if you
want.
?
In addition, if they detect an ‘unusual’ login from a different machine / location than normal, they require 2-factor authentication
as a security feature via a code sent to a mobile phone, even if it was not set as on in the account settings.
?
As Hannah says, this may cause problems for regions where the account is shared.

Is it possible to have the best of both?
Reacting to the phrase 'login from unusual location', how many logins does it take to become a usual location/device? If on one designated afternoon all the (potential) hosts log in a couple of times from their (potential) device(s) (possibly even with 1 central phone relaying the codes to the respective 'hosts'), thereafter every next time can be hassle free?
Or, maybe as a permanent backup if codes will be necessary occasionally: If person A logs in, can a code sent to person B (or M-office?) be used? (intended to allow people to keep their phone nr secret except to person B for relaying the code)
(I'm quite tired of being tracked on the meter and second by a zillion companies for solely their benefit and profile building and the very rare microscopic benefit for me)
Anyway, got interrupted so train of thought has departed in the meanwhile ;-)
But the above might be inspiring enough to find a usable method, IF indeed deemed necessary (which I personally doubt a bit)
kind regards, Leo Kleinenberg (East-NL)

Agree with Lynn – it’s probably best not to switch on 2FA for shared regional accounts for this reason. However,
the problem comes when Zoom detects an ‘unusual’ login attempt, and uses it anyway.
?
Perhaps a workaround like Leo suggests would work, but it does sound a bit flaky and unrobust. Perhaps we just have to try things and
see how it works out?
?
Any other ideas?

Andrew.
