Zoom latest release allows hosts to see Waiting Room whilst in a Breakout Room

开云体育

I just updated to Zoom v 5.4.9, and saw in the release notes that hosts can now see the waiting room whilst in a breakout room.

?

This is very useful! Although I rarely bother using the waiting room myself – I don’t see the point. If people know the password to join, why do I then need to do a final check, which also takes a lot of time and effort on behalf of the host?

?

Best wishes,

Andrew.

We use the waiting room routinely to allow the host, the leaders, and any featured speaker to communicate among each other early, before everyone else joins the session. We'll typically start a session 15 minutes early, to facilitate this. The key players will know to join early. Also, just because someone has the password to join doesn't mean they've been invited. Passwords can be shared. Links can be shared. We tell everyone not to, but it happens anyway -- intentionally or otherwise. So having the waiting room gives us more control over who enters. Without this mechanism, we would need to require authentication, but that's a bit more complex and can discourage participation.?

Best wishes,

Jim

In Zoom, if a waiting room is in use, then we do need to be able to see it from breakout rooms, otherwise the host always has to stay in the main room.

I do find though that a waiting room isn't a particularly good tool for meetings such as ours when people can (and do) join at any point during the session. The host always has to keep an eye on the top of the screen to avoid leaving people stewing! The alternative security measure - the passcode - is better but doesn't appear effective given that it is embedded into the link that participants click on!

I've used a waiting room once and it just caused problems, mostly due to an inattentive host

I recently stopped using waiting rooms as I think I once missed admitting someone once the meeting was underway, and I couldn’t see that they provided much benefit. I had been switching them off manually each time I set up a meeting but just this morning I changed the default setting for any new meetings I create in future.

Jo
