WhatsApp

Hi folks, has anyone thought about using a WhatsApp video call for a meeting? I haven't used WhatsApp but apparently it will run on Windows and Mac as well as mobile devices and up to 32 people can join a meeting.? Any thoughts appreciated.? Thanks? ? ??

I use What's App all the time for messaging and it's great especially for groups. I have only made a video call a couple of times and it was fine for one on one. Have only used WhatsApp on my phone and never on a laptop. As everything else works so well maybe it would be worth a try.

I gave up WhatsApp when it was absorbed by Facebook and lost its privacy.? Now I use signal, but not sure if it's any good for group meetings.

I’ve also stopped using WhatsApp since it was taken over by Meta because of privacy concerns, except where I have to.

?

It would still be interesting to see whether WhatsApp would be able to handle a multi-person video call over longer time. Shall we test it out?

?

Best wishes,

Andrew.

Indeed it might be an interesting exercise, Andrew. However I have never used WhatsApp so personally would not be able to judge it objectively. Given the apparent strength of feeling towards Meta we are unlikely to be able to use it for a meeting.

It was just an idle thought - I will put it back in its box!

Thanks and best wishes - and thanks Patrick too for your response.

We could always try Signal instead – that has full encryption, and isn’t owned by Meta (or anyone else dodgy!).

Best wishes,

Andrew.

Spookily, just after writing that I'd given up WhatsApp, I was obliged to revive it because of another group I was involved with.? I note that it still makes claims about end to end encryption, which is sort of reassuring.
