Locked sony 7600

Hi
Does anybody used the sony 7600gr with a 1-1.5 meters diameter cooper
tube
magnetic loop(no pream)?
How does it compare to a dipole, tuned long wire, etc.?

Thanks

George

I have an ICF-7600 and can test one with a good loop. I seldom use
it, but as I recall its AM section was really good. Not as good as
an SR3, but good. I think even a two foot loop would really boost
its AM up.

As far as copper tubing loops, some very careful, controlled
experimentation I have done in a Faraday cage with reference
antennas and an Agilent network analyzer has shown that the Q of the
loop has no relationship to the sensitivity. So copper tubing is a
needless expense unless you are going for a lot of Q. The crystal
radio people have very low resistance wire - 600 46 guage strand or
110 44 guage strand - that will beat copper tubing by a mile for
high Q tuned loops. So if your problem is separating stations, I
can get you some contacts. The wire isn't cheap, though. You are
dealing with garage crystal radio hobbyists who buy a reel, and then
charge through the nose for lengths of it.

George???????????????????????

Hi George:

Yes, I use a loop approx. 1M in diameter (actually diamond shaped) with a Sony SW7600GR.? I am on the 9th flr with a balcony outside my bedroom window.? The loop is constructed of RG-58 coax, all one piece with continuous shield.? At the bottom of the loop the 2 ends of the center conductor are connected to 300 ohm balanced feed line.? The coax shield is left unconnected (gap of approx 1") at the feed point.? The 300 ohm feed line comes through the window frame and connects to a balanced antenna tuner.? The antenna is oriented to provide the least amount of local noise.? The antenna tuner tunes the antenna to the SW band of choice 5-17 MHZ.? The 7600 feeds a pair of KOSS amplified speakers.? It makes an excellent SW listening setup.
