File - UploadingFilesLinksPhotos.txt
If you have a link relevant to the group, please post it in the Links section. If you just put it in a message, it will get lost in the shuffle after a few days. The coverage of the list is pretty broad.
All members can upload Links, Files, and Photos. A few guidelines: Try to place them in the proper folder, if it exists. If not, you can either just put it in the root folder and eventually I'll move it into the proper place, or create a folder. When creating a folder or uploading a file or photo, please don't use spaces or punctuation. You can either use caps for the first letter of each word, or use underscore as a space. Like this: "4x8Loop" or "4x8_loop" or "Steves_4x8_Loop" Not like this: "Steve's 4 x 8 Loop." That goes for Folder names and File names. A special note about the Photos section: Please crop in to the important parts. For photos, JPG saves smaller and looks better, for line drawings GIF is smaller and looks better. Please do not use TIFF/TIF or BMP files, the file size is way too big and I may delete without notice. Feel free to ask if you need help figuring out how to crop and resample. Irfanview is a fairly easy to use program that loads just about any file, you can crop and resample from there: Or for more complex stuff, another free program is GIMP: Attachments are now allowed, but please use judiciously. Rather than going out with the messages, they will be stored on the list but you'll get a link with the message. A last note: if you see something in any folder or in the messages that looks like spam or simply inappropriate, don't post on the list- email me directly and tell me about it and I'll take care of it with a minimum of fuss. loopantennas-owner@... Re: Difficulties aside, best design placement of all the components of the Magnetic Loop
Craig F. Simmons
I am currently gathering all the parts to make a remote tuned 15-40 meter loop antenna similar to an Alpha loop except the design will have some improvements for my use and tastes. This will be for portable use but not necessary ¡°portable as in an Alex loop or Alpha loop antenna system. ?Mine will be made out of common found aluminum strips, small inductance loop at top, tuning capacitor at bottom connected by non-conductive shaft to DC motor/reduction gear. I will connect the tuning capacitor by ? non-conducting shaft to DC motor/reduction gear well below the elevated loop using ? universal couplings and ? nylon bearing flange mounted. This will allow there to be free movement in the shaft and make it easier to mount with less stress on the whole system. This also allows the dc motor to be removed away from the RF field of the loop. This will take more time to set up, weigh more and be less portable due to components and size of space needed to pack. It will also be a lot more users friendly and easier to operate, change bands and get more precise tuning due to no proximity effect of manual tuning. I do mostly portable HF, without the worry of equipment needed, like field day. For strictly fast set up and portable HF, I do not believe there is much improvement that could be made to the Alpha loop or the Alex loop for what they are intended for use. When complete I will post pictures and step by step details. My main problem with current loops is they are the design for portable, quick set up and light weight. With these design requirements in mind it limits there construction.? These same thoughts have me planning two big loops I want to build for permanent use for 160 and 75 meters. I will never have the real estate or the towers, tall trees to put up a proper large wire loop or wire antenna for those bands and from several articles I have read, a proper single band loop with vacuum variable capacitor makes a great antenna for these bands.

Best placement of all the components of the Magnetic Loop

?
I was hoping for some detailed discussion on the best/ideal location of the tuning capacitor, (motor if remotely tuned) and coupling loop/RF feed method. All pose design problems and considerations weather it is permanent mounting or use or portable and supply's needed or on hand. But if all these things aside , what would be the best RF configuration of the loop. Most portable loops have the tuning capacitor at the bottom for obvious reasons and the RF feed point at the opposite side (Top) of the loop. What comes to mind is the coax crosses the RF path to the transceiver. If you reverse this and place the tuning at the top this makes it more difficult to tune the antenna and also makes it more difficult to keep from interfering with the loop while tuning. Now if you consider the point of the tuning capacitor has the most RF this removes it from the operator and possibly helps with the signal/RF being at a higher point. If you use remote tuning in this configuration, this removes the interference from the equation but possible RF problems being so close to the motor-and this too may cause interference. In theory, and I am just guessing, you could put just the capacitor at the top, RF feed at the bottom and maybe use some kind of non conducting shaft from the capacitor down to below the loop, away from the RF field to a motor, this seems to me an ideal set up. This of course is not good for portable but maybe just design ideal. Please i know there are a lot of experience persons that have tried or maybe tested some of these different configuration, we would all benefit from the knowledge. Thank you |

Re: Difficulties aside, best design placement of all the components of the Magnetic Loop
There is a third approach to the design of a remotely tuned transmitting loop antenna that does away with the expensive vacuum variable capacitor and the coupling loop: I'm presently looking at a variation that requires a single variable capacitor instead of the ganged dual. N6RK Remote Tuned Loop Experience
To the group; I am planing to purchase a receive loop antenna tuning network from N6RK Rick. Certainly not to question him or his talents. Already having a shielded coaxial loop, this would be the antenna tuning network, and the remote tuning box to assemble and connect to my loop. Of course this is a well received proven type of receiving antenna published in the NCJ magazine some years ago. I was just curious has anyone either purchased or built this exact system? If so wondering how it may have worked out for you, or did it? Respectfully I am not interested in the different types of receiving antennas. EWE's K9AY, beverage ETC. ETC.that you may have found to be better. I am more so very interested in your experiences and opinion of this specific remote-tuned loop. How has it performed, did it, how did you mount it, how high, how close to your transmit antenna, use a rotor ETC.? By means of severe space restriction, it is this type of receiving antenna I am selecting, and have specific only interest in and wanted to learn from anyone who may have any actual experience with. Thank you very much in advance for any potential replies, advise and help. 73 Ross ?KB8NTY |

Antenna efficiency: Comparing the Alpha Loop & Alex Loop
Antenna efficiency: Comparing the Alpha Loop & Alex Loop I have spent much time inputting all of the variables into??for the bands that are safe to operate both the Alex and Alpha Loop on, and found why the Alpha Loop has more gain. The measurements from Alex for his loop are Length of Conductor (antenna "circumference") = 10.3 feet & Diameter of Conductor .32 inches. Here are the calculated efficencies for the Alex and Alpha Loop antenna's. Please not that the Alpha Loop's measurements are Length of Conductor = 9.92 feet & Diameter of Conductor = .477 Antenna efficiency - The Alpha Loop VS the Alex Loop From 7 to 7.3 MHz Alpha Loop; 8% - 9% Alex Loop; 6% - 7% From 10.1 to 10.150 MHz Alpha Loop: 23% - 23% Alex Loop: 18% - 18% From 14 to 14.350 MHz Alpha Loop: 48% - 50% Alex Loop: 41% - 43% From 18.068 to 18.168 MHz Alpha Loop: 69% - 70% Alex Loop: 63% - 63% From 21 to 21.450 MHz Alpha Loop: 79% - 80% Alex Loop: 74% - 76% An alarming find when I input Alex's measurements for his loop into??for 10 through 12 Meters occurred. On those frequencies a RED message appears that says:? "To avoid self-resonance, the conductor length for a small transmitting loop antenna should be less than 1/4 wavelength." I now understand why the AlexLoop should not be used on 10 & 12 Meters, which is because exponential increases in resistance will occur on a small transmitting loop when self-resonance occurs, which can damage equipment.? For more information on this, see the section titled "Inductance and self-resonance" here:? |

Re: Box Loop Antenna Rewind?
Doing some quick research on Litz wire and loop antennas, it appears that solid wire is better than stranded and litz wire is the best of all for various technical reasons having to do with electron spin and skin currents. On paper if you use Litz wire the "Q" of the loop should improve and the sensitivity increase. 175/46 type wire seems to be the most recommended size to use. Question is, is the improvement to the loop worth the time and expense to do it and will we snag more DX with the Litz wire loop. Anyone ever done this and have real world comparisons?

Re: Yahoo at its best
Thanks Andy, I think I have succeeded in posting in both locations.
I would rather have had the previous format that was used before Yahoo "fixed" it tnx 73 Graeme |

There should be a purple "Upload" button near the upper right corner. First you need to go into the Files area, then navigate to the directory where you want the upload to appear. ?Then press Upload.
If you don't see it, then you are probably using a web browser that Yahoo does not support. ?Ugh.
Attaching a file to an email message doesn't exactly put it into the Files area. ?It is a different function. ?It's OK for what it does, but it works differently, and the file does not come up when someone goes into the Files area a year from now, looking for that file. ?That's one reason why I prefer using the Files area, rather than attached files.
